Book excerpt: Combustion efficiency was determined using natural gas fuel over a range of injection temperatures from ambient to 1200' F (922 K). The combustor was comprised of three U-gutter flameholders mounted downstream of a trumpet-shaped diffuser in a rectangulai housing. A simple film-cooled liner was used. Tests were conducted at ambient pressure over a range of fuel-air ratios and combustor reference velocities. Increases in efficiency of more than 40 percentage points were achieved at the higher fuel temperatures. The results are applicable to natural gas afterburner design and to the design of advanced low-pressure-loss primary combustors.

Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.

Book excerpt: A 27-inch (68.6-cm) long rectangular combustor segment consisting of an array of 48 combustor modules was tested to determine its performance. Each module mixed and swirled fuel with air and stabilized combustion. Test conditions were inlet temperatures of 600 [degree] and 1150 [degree] F (589 and 894 K), a pressure of 3 atmospheres, and reference velocities to 160 ft/sec (48.8 m/sec). Results were combustion efficiencies of 100 percent, a pressure loss of 5.4 percent for an inlet Mach number of 0.25, a heat release rate of 11.86x10 [power of six] Btu/(hr)(ft [power of three] )(atm) for a temperature ratio of 2.5, and pattern factor spans of 0.30 to 0.37 and 0.22 to 0.28 with 600 [degree] and 1150 [degree] F (589 and 894 K) inlet air temperatures, respectively. Altitude blowout and relight data, as well as a comparison of results with a longer combustor, are also included.

Book excerpt: Lower pollutant emissions and broader multifuel flexibility are driving forces for advancing aircraft, vehicular, and industrial engine performance and versatility. Both are inherently connected with the design of the fuel injector and combustor system. The traditional concerns, improving durability and fuel economy over the life of the engine, remain additional requirements.**This volume offers a comprehensive treatment of modern practice aimed both at those in the field and newcomers interested in research and development for gas turbine combustors. Detailed description and assessment of a range of combustor design models and methods**Specification and evolution of fuels and fuel injectors**System models for fuel effects on engines and airframes**Evaluation of laser-based measurement techniques for combustor flow field studies

This book was released on 1972 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests of various fuel nozzles were conducted with natural gas fuel in a full-annulus combustor. The nozzles were designed to provide either axial, angled, or radial fuel injection. Each fuel nozzle was evaluated by measuring combustion efficiency at relatively severe combustor operating conditions. Combustor blowout and altitude ignition tests were also used to evaluate nozzle designs. Results indicate that angled injection gave higher combustion efficiency, less tendency toward combustion instability, and altitude relight characteristics equal to or superior to those of the other fuel nozzles that were tested.
