Book excerpt: The writing of this thesis was prompted by the recent events that took place in my home country, Tunisia. On December 2010, following the self-immolation of the fruit vendor, Mohamed Bouazizi, a wave of protests swept across the country that led to the fall of the twenty-three year dictatorship of Zine el Abdine Ben Ali. Five years after the uprising, the struggle to establish a viable democracy continues today. This collection of essays about Tunisia is meant as a small contribution to this end. In it, I reflect on my life in an attempt to understand some of the problems plaguing my country today. In these essays, personal memories mingle with fragments of the country's history to offer insights into Tunisian society. Some of the essays are focused on childhood experiences, some are focused on my education, and some are my attempt to imagine how young educated people, my peers, could turn to terrorism. In this way, most of the essays involve contemplation of social and political issues. As I reflect on Tunisia's history and on my own growth, I feel abundant beauty and meaningfulness, but I also recognize complexity, contradictions, and tragedy. Through these reflections, I offer neither answers nor solutions, but pose the questions that, I think, are worth considering in post-revolutionary Tunisia.
