Book excerpt: The Thoracic Surgery Residents Association (TSRA) was established in 1997 under the guidance of the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association (TSDA) to create a unified voice to represent residents during cardiothoracic surgery training. The organization has developed as a core mission a focus on improving the quality, accessibility and utility of resident education. The current publication seeks to provide a resource which may be used in the surgeon's daily practice as a resource for the review of the major steps of an operation as well as a guide to the appropriate documentation of the conduct of that operation. We hope that the text will be useful for both practicing surgeons and residents in training. While the list of operations included in the text is extensive it is by no means intended to be inclusive of the entire breadth of the field of cardiothoracic surgery. Additionally, the text provides descriptions of one approach to the operations included. We acknowledge that the approach to a given operation may vary among surgeons, and institutions. This text is not intended to establish a uniform 'correct' approach, nor is it intended as a surrogate for formal residency training.

Book excerpt: Over the last 23 years our identity and mission of the TSRA have expanded to meet the needs of our members by providing peer-based resources and support for cardiothoracic surgery residents to succeed throughout training and launch successful careers. The prior edition of this book, TSRA Clinical Scenarios in Cardiothoracic Surgery, published in 2013 was tremendously successful. The first edition of this book aimed to augment available resident educational resources. It focused on knowledge application in a dynamic decision-making capacity highlighting surgical technique, practical knowledge and clinical acumen based on a variety of different clinical case scenarios. This edition aims to update this review resource while simultaneously expanding the scope of clinical scenarios to keep pace with the ever-changing clinical cardiothoracic training environment. The aim of this book is to review common, high-yield clinical scenarios that may surface during a cardiothoracic surgeon's practice in congenital, thoracic, or adult cardiac surgery. It was written by residents for residents. We meticulously reviewed and edited all previous clinical case scenario chapters focusing on updated clinical and scientific evidence. The first edition contained 72 chapters authored by over 50 residents and faculty from across the country. The new edition contains 19 new chapters (36-chapter revisions) with 91 chapters authored by 159 residents and faculty nationwide! We have maintained the structure and flow of the book utilizing the three major sections of cardiothoracic surgery: General Thoracic Surgery, Adult Cardiac while expanding the congenital section to be Congenital Cardiothoracic Surgery.

This unique application, developed by residents and national faculty, is a 100-chapter compendium with an individual algorithm on various topics to provide a foundation and framework of important cardiothoracic surgery topics with clinical decisions. As the field of cardiothoracic surgery continues to evolve, attention to key clinical decisions is necessary prior to incorporating indicated interventions. Very few textbooks focus on the decision algorithms in the diagnosis and management of clinical cardiothoracic pathologies. The Thoracic Surgery Residents Association (TSRA) have a clear and sustained commitment to education. The previous textbooks created under the auspices of this organization are among the most affordable and practical manuscripts in our field. It is our hope to provide this addition to the growing TSRA library under the same tradition.Although this field is ever changing, many of the basic principles remain the same: There are basic frameworks that are shared and can be used by those taking care of cardiothoracic patients. Book excerpt: Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery, Second Edition is intended to teach residents the principles of succinct and precise operative dictations for a wide spectrum of surgical procedures. Designed as a portable resource, the book provides typical dictations to guide the resident. Comprised of 226 procedures, this new edition comprises the majority of procedures commonly performed by general and vascular surgeons. For each procedure, a list of common indications is given. This list covers 95% of the situations in which a particular procedure will be used. A list of essential steps follows. These can be used to mentally rehearse the procedure before it is performed. The next heading, Note these technical variations, introduces a list that is intended to prompt the surgeon for particular things to note and dictate within the template. A list of possible complications that are typically associated with that particular surgical procedure follows. Finally, a template operative dictation is provided. Common opening and terminating sequences (for example, how to enter and close the abdomen) in all laparotomy dictations are included. The volume has two primary objectives. First, it is designed to serve as a source of model operative dictations that may be individualized and used as templates. Second, it is intended as an aide-memoir, giving the surgeon a short list of pertinent information about each procedure. Ample space is provided to allow each surgeon to add notes. By reviewing this introductory material before scrubbing on a procedure, the trainee surgeon will enter the operating room better prepared to participate actively and to learn as much as possible. At the end of training, this book, with the notes accumulated by the resident, will serve as an invaluable review resource analogous to the individualized notebooks many surgeons keep. Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery, Second Edition is intended for practicing surgeons, who may modify each template to reflect their own individual practice. It also serves as a concise reminder of essential steps in those operations that may be only rarely performed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every member of the surgical team usually has a personal journal with notes and diagrams. I too have always put all I appreciated into my little notebook of diagrams and notes, whenever I learned anything valuable in a case. I find it useful even now to revise my notes before I sleep on the night before a challenging case. This handbook was derived from that habit, and it will help you see what unique things I saw during my training in India. We all know that there are deficiencies in learning cardiac surgery from books, a single surgical tutor or a small institute doing less work. By giving you concisely all the basic steps of each operation, we aim to make the team’s training period a lot easier, the learning curve shorter and you will then be a more confident cardiac surgical trainee. This, I hope, will help your mentor find you as a very capable person to teach. Cheers and all the very best!

Book excerpt: Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery, the first volume in Springer's new Operative Dictations Made Simple Series, is intended to teach residents the principles of succinct and precise operative dictations for a wide spectrum of surgical procedures. Designed as a portable resource, the book provides typical dictations to guide the resident. Comprised of 155 procedures, this volume covers the alimentary tract, breast, lymph nodes, and head and neck, as well as vascular surgery, including aneurysmal disease and endovascular procedures. This volume provides templates for both minimally invasive and open approaches. As it is often difficult for the surgical resident to filter what should be included in the operative report, this book provides an authoritative guide for operative dictations while remaining flexible enough to accomodate variations in the surgical procedures performed. Written by the experienced team of a surgical department chair and a program director, the book will guide the reader step-by-step through successful dictations. The book can also serve as a quick review of the essential steps of various surgical procedures. Clearly, a must- have for every surgical resident. In addition, Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery: Operative Dictations Made Simple makes a perfect companion volume to Chassin's Operative Strategy in General Surgery, Third Edition, edited by Carol Scott-Conner, M.D., Ph.D. The procedures in both books are presented in the same order so the resident can easily use both resources together.

Book excerpt: "A surgeon can kill you...and you'll sleep right through it." The most dramatic—and seemingly glamorous—of medical fields, surgery captivates the public's imagination. Written for inquisitive laymen as well as anyone in the medical profession, this fascinating first-person account documents the career of one of America's top surgeons. Readers accompany Sidney Schwab through medical school at Case Western Reserve University; an internship; junior and senior residencies (with a detour to Vietnam, where he won a Purple Heart); and finally his chief residency years in San Francisco. With humor and poignancy—and sometimes graphic detail—Schwab recalls memorable surgeries, surgeons, and patients. He takes care to explain, in understandable and interesting fashion, a variety of diseases, medical issues, and surgical techniques. More than just a memoir, Cutting Remarks offers a compelling look at how trauma and surgery are handled at a major hospital, and provides valuable insight into a surgeon's relationship with both peers and patients.
