Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before she wrote the bestselling Brokeback Mountain, Annie Proulx was already producing some of the finest short fiction in the country. Here are her collected stories, including two new works never before anthologized. These stories reverberate with rural tradition, the rites of nature, and the rituals of small town life. The country is blue collar New England; the characters are native families and the dispossessed working class, whose heritage is challenged by the neorural bourgeoisie from the city; and the themes are as elemental as the landscape: revenge, malice, greed, passion. Told with skill and profundity and crafted by a master storyteller, these are lean, tough tales of an extraordinary place and its people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is among the most enigmatic, charismatic, deeply revered and equally reviled figures of the twentieth century. His Autobiography, one of the most widely read and translated Indian books of all time, is a classic that allows us to glimpse the transformation of a well-meaning lawyer into a Satyagrahi and an ashramite. In this first-ever critical edition, eminent scholar Tridip Suhrud shines new light on Gandhi's life and thought. The deeply researched notes elucidate the contexts and characters of the Autobiography, while alternative translations capture the flavour, cadence and quirkiness of the Gujarati. In the highly original and insightful introduction, Suhrud traces Gandhi's transformation into a Satyagrahi, a seeker of Truth as God, and explores possible modes of reading the Autobiography. This edition is an absorbing, illuminating text about the life-affirming journey of the most public yet most complex figure of Indian history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lady with the Dog and Other Stories (1917) is a collection of nine stories by Russian writer Anton Chekhov. Recognized today as foundational for the development of the modern short story, Anton Chekhov has transcended Russian literature to become one of the most popular and acclaimed authors in history, in any language. This collection includes “The Lady with the Dog,” a meditative tale of forbidden desire and the frailty of hope described by Vladimir Nabokov as “one of the greatest stories ever written” despite breaking “[a]ll the traditional rules” of storytelling. The title story of the collection follows Dmitri Gurov, a married middle-aged man who falls in love with a young newlywed while on vacation in Yalta. The woman he desires, Anna Sergeyevna, is also unhappy with her marriage, and soon the two spend their days together before Anna decides to go home to her husband. Back in Moscow, Gurov—a man who has had many affairs—finds himself unable to shake the memory of Anna, and longs for the chance to see her once more. In “A Doctor’s Visit,” a young doctor named Korlyov journeys to the home of a recently deceased industrialist, where he has been called to care for the frail heiress Liza. There, he finds himself beset with dark thoughts and even darker visions, and soon discovers that the cure for Liza’s illness may be far beyond his skill. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Anton Chekhov’s The Lady with the Dog and Other Stories is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Monster and Other Stories (1899) is a collection of short fiction by American writer Stephen Crane. “The Monster,” a novella, was originally published in 1898 in Harper’s Magazine and has since been recognized as one of Crane’s most important works, a story which critiques the racism prevalent in American society. In 1899, it was published alongside “The Blue Hotel” and “His New Mittens” in The Monster and Other Stories, which was the last work by Crane to be published during his lifetime. In “The Monster,” set in the fictional town of Whilomville, an African American coachmen employed by the wealthy Trescott family is horribly disfigured while attempting to save their young son Jimmie from a house fire. Despite his gruesome injuries, Henry Johnson survives, and Dr. Trescott gratefully nurses him back to health and offers him a place to stay on the family property. Meanwhile, the white townspeople, who view Johnson as a monster, vilify the Trescotts for transgressing the unspoken rules of racial segregation. As Johnson attempts to return to some sense of normalcy, he is rejected both by the African American and white communities, and retreats into a lonely, quiet life. “The Blue Hotel” is a story of violence, fate, and hatred, of a place where loneliness reigns among strangers, and where fear is a troublesome friend. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Stephen Crane’s The Monster and Other Stories is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short stories takes its title from one of the stories contained in it: The Protectors. All stories are basically romantic in nature, but they are not simple love stories. Their themes have all the colours, and their myriad shades, to afford you a panoramic view of the world we live in. The first story, for example, is that of a boy whose rebellious nature, not accepting the norms of a corrupt society, struggles to achieve a job on the basis of his qualification, and not on the recommendation of a friend. Another story deals in defence of the motherland from the vicious attack of a rival force. Then there is a story which gives a graphic picture of a poverty-stricken housing scheme where women, forgetting about their self-respect, stoop so low as to adopt a life style, both execrable and pitiable but there are women and there are women! In brief, the book touches on unemployment, indignity of a religious family, and inheritance inciting to murder. A story each describes the horrendous custom of doing away with female foetuses, the ugly face of feudalism, and foundering efforts of a courtesan to escape to a righteous life. Last but not least is the story of educated youth, who for want of any reasonable job, resort to robbery. The book takes you along on a journey which unravels a picture of unspeakable misery some people are subjected to. One would feel the milk of human kindness is drying up fast! One could read these stories with a view to killing time, but if they pause and think well, that is exactly what these stories are aimed at.
