Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alien Immigrant The alien Immigrant has been the subject of prolonged and bitter controversy, in which both sides have been guilty of some exaggera tion. On the one hand, there are those who uphold the newcomers as an unmixed advan tage to this country; on the other, there are many who denounce their advent as an un mitigated evil. The object of this volume is to put both aspects of the case before the public as impartially as I can. The whole subject is one of great difficulty and complexity; but I am not Without hope that these pages may serve to throw some light on it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alien Invasion Mv object in writing this little book has been to collect together in a popular and readable form the main facts connected with the question of destitute immigration. I have endeavoured to set forth as concisely as possible the evils consequent upon our present system, and to place before the public the leading arguments in favour of some moderate and judicious restriction of the influx of the destitute and worthless of other countries. In doing so, I have studiously avoided identifying this important question with any particular party, or any particular creed. It is a matter which concerns the nation as a whole, and it is one in which men of all creeds and parties - Jew or Christian, Liberal or Conservative - may unite together for good. The advisability of restricting our present system of unchecked destitute immigration is a matter upon which there exists considerable difference of opinion. In giving expression to my earnest convictions, I ask for that same indulgence which I willingly extend to those who may differ from my conclusions. They have come, millions of them; they are now coming, at the rate of a million a year. They come from every clime, country, and condition; and they are of every sort: good, bad, and indifferent, literate and illiterate, virtuous and vicious, ambitious and aimless, strong and weak, skilled and unskilled, married and single, old and young, Christian and infidel, Jew and pagan. They form to-day the raw material of the American citizenship of to-morrow. What they will be and do then depends largely upon what our American Protestant Christianity does for them now. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alien Problem and Its Remedy The exclusion of undesirable aliens is now an accepted feature of English political opinion. Adherence to the view may vary in degree, according to personal predilection on the one hand and definition of the term undesirable on the other the standpoints are inter-related, definition being dependent upon the sympathy, or sentiment, or prejudice animating the interest in the question. The Aliens Act of 1905 during the period of its existence on the Statute Book, now more than five years, has been freely criticised from this triple attitude. It has satisfied neither section of its critics - the class that is uncompromisingly hostile to the alien simply because he has, to use the legal term, not been born within the allegiance of the Crown of the Kingdom those whose sole concern is excited by the fear that a treasured tradition, the Right of Asylum to persecuted refugees, is in danger of being abruptly ended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immigrant Aliens Destined for and Emigrant Aliens Departed From Massachusetts, 1913 Massachusetts has always been one of the leading States as t destination of immigrants, ranking third or fourth for over 20 years, having been exceeded only by New York, Pennsylvania, and Illi During the period 1894 - 1904 it was exceeded only by New York Pennsylvania. During recent years there has been a marked change in the sources of immigration. A large part of our immigration was formerly of Teu tonic and Celtic origin, but for several years the bulk of immigration has come from the countries of Eastern and Southern Europe and Asia. The number of such origin admitted to the United States in 1913 was or about 75 per cent of all the immigrants admitted, the corresponding percentage in 1912 having been 68 per cent. Although Massachusetts receives a smaller proportion of this immigration than the country as a whole, nevertheless, approximately 55 per cent of the immi grant aliens destined for Massachusetts during the year 1913 were from Eastern and Southern Europe and Western Asia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American in the Making: The Life Story of an Immigrant The average American, when he thinks of im migrants at all, thinks, I am afraid, of something rather comical. He thinks of bundles - funny, pictu resque bundles of every shape and size and color. The alien himself, in his incredible garb, as he walks off the gang-plank, appears like some sort of an odd, moving bundle. And always he carries more bundles. Later on, in his peculiar, transplanted life, he sells nondescript merchandise in fantastic vehicles, does violence to the American's language, and sits down on the curb to eat fragrant cheese and unimaginable sausages. He is, for certain, a character fit for a farce. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Federal Administration and the Alien by : Frances Kellor
Download or read book The Federal Administration and the Alien written by Frances Kellor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Federal Administration and the Alien: A Supplement to Immigration and the Future The Federal Administration and the Alien is a supplement to Immigration and the Future, published in January of this year. The last national election reposed such an overwhelming confidence of both native and foreign born people in the new Federal Administration that there is ground for renewed hope of the possibility of obtaining an immigration policy which will be representative of the wishes of all of the people of this great Republic. There are indications that the hysteria concerning an "immigrant invasion" is disappearing; and that there is to be a return to a quiet time of normal thinking and just feeling. The appointment of exceptionally able statesmen to the posts of Secretary of State, of the Treasury, and of Commerce, strengthens the belief that the international aspects of immigration will receive due attention. The appointment of a Commissioner-General of Immigration thoroughly familiar with the subject is a further assurance that the national conduct of immigration will be improved, and that the laws will be better enforced. There is a likelihood that the percentage limitation bill will pass Congress, in which case the apprehension concerning an "alien invasion" will be be removed. This will set the American mind free to consider larger phases of the question. It therefore seems to be an opportune time to urge that we take time to study, to analyze, and to compare notes upon the post-war changes which affect aliens. Download or read book The Law of Aliens and Naturalization written by Henry Straus Quixano Henriques and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law of Aliens and Naturalization: Including the d104 of the Aliens Act, 1905 No Treatise on the Law of Aliens has been published for more than sixty years, since which time all the Naturalization Acts now in force and the Aliens Act have been passed. It is therefore thought that the present Work may be not unwelcome to the profession and the public. It was originally intended to issue the book before the Aliens Act of 1906 came into operation, but some delay was caused owing to the Rules and Orders under that Act not being in the hands of the Author until the month of January. It is believed that modifications will shortly be made in these Rules by the Home Office, and no doubt further alterations will from time to time be made; nevertheless it is hoped that the operation of the Act is sufficiently described in Chapter VI.
