Book excerpt: American Snowflake is a novel set in real time, as Socialist Democrat and Fidel-Castro-T-shirt-wearing millennial Roland Dark begins waking up to the truth about the Democratic Party and the fake news propaganda. It's the election year of 2016, and in Los Angeles, California, the only thing that's certain is that capitalism is over and Bernie Sanders will soon be president of the United States. Hooray for socialism! Everything will be free! America will soon be the socialist utopia that Roland Dark and all his friends have always dreamed of: no one will have a job, and money will rain down from airplanes the government flies over every city. But then Roland's nightmare happens: Donald J. Trump becomes president of the United States. Trump is like . . . oh my gosh . . . like so bad. Los Angeles quickly becomes an unhinged hotbed of radical protesters who haven't showered. Soon after, very bizarre woke rules begin to take shape, and they're starting to drive outspoken Roland Dark insane. Roland's filmmaking colleagues are convinced Trump is a Russian spy, and no one is allowed to say otherwise or they will be thrown off the set. Roland's feminist socialist neighbor is convinced she's being oppressed by something strange called toxic masculinity. Roland's friends who are "people of color" can't stop arguing about who's more oppressed by white privilege. As Roland begins to discover within his inner circles very odd beliefs, which seem to stem from the policies of the Obama administration, he begins looking at his own inner beliefs, and he begins to wonder if he's just as crazy as all of them. He then begins to wonder if everything CAN be free. Communist uprisings have caused devastation in countries such as Cambodia, which just so happens to be where Roland Dark's girlfriend Hong immigrated from. "But surely that wasn't real socialism. Surely it will work here in America," Roland keeps telling himself. As the violent and incredibly delusional behavior of so-called liberals all around him grows, he still just can't seem to understand how anyone could have ever voted for Trump in 2016. The economy will collapse at any moment. Or at least that's what the media keep saying. Roland can't seem to understand why so much money is constantly falling out of his pockets, and why the economy keeps skyrocketing with Trump's deregulation and America First trade policies. It's almost as if freedom and capitalism work, which is odd, because all of the mainstream media said they didn't for all of Roland's life. It's almost as if it's all been fake news the whole time. Still, Roland Dark is steadfast in his beliefs that we are all just slaves to our corporate masters, and all of his friends keep reminding him of these beliefs, given that he wrote his first book, American Slave, about that very same theory. Surely Roland Dark and other brilliant geniuses like Michael Moore are the ones who are right, and it's the Trump supporters who are crazy. As Roland Dark's world begins to unravel, someone from his San Francisco past pops back up into his life. If you really want to know who and what has been causing the division, radicalization, and delusion in America, read this book. But be forewarned that it might just make you end up being a MAGA-hat-wearing, America-loving, Trump-supporting conservative, like its author. This is NOT fake news! Make America Great Again 2020!

Book excerpt: Hollywood and MAGA don't get along. There are plenty of right wingers who won't even touch this book because "Hollywood" is on the cover. Meanwhile, there are plenty of snowflake leftists who are fighting back tears because they assume this book is propaganda from "orange Thanos" to take over Tinseltown. And then there's you, the American. Conservative or liberal, you realize that Hollywood and MAGA are at war with each other and that it's a battle worth examining. MAKE HOLLYWOOD GREAT AGAIN navigates through 2017 - 2020's theatrical releases examining journalism, conspiracy and the media, as well as a bevy of other topics. Filmmakers have addressed their undesired tenet in the White House through a variety of stories, mostly non-fiction. The book privileges "The Post," "Blackkklansman," "The Front Runner," "Dark Waters," "Richard Jewell," and "The Hunt" among others.

But their eyes were opened after Trump won sixty-two million votes and the Oval Office in 2016. Even Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said, “Donald Trump heard a voice in this country that no one else heard.” He still does. Donald Trump puts “America’s interests first—and that means doing what’s right for our economy, our national security, and our public safety.” He made the biggest deals of his life as President of the United States, but there are more deals to be made. From ending the border crisis to enacting policies to eliminate regulations that restrict small businesses, Donald Trump understands that America “doesn’t need cowardice, it needs courage.” It is Time to Get Tough

Book excerpt: The instant #1 New York Times bestseller | A Washington Post Notable Book | One of NPR's Best Books of 2021 The definitive behind-the-scenes story of Trump's final year in office, by Phil Rucker and Carol Leonnig, the Pulitzer-Prize winning reporters and authors of A Very Stable Genius. “Chilling.” – Anderson Cooper “Jaw-dropping.” – John Berman “Shocking.” – John Heilemann “Explosive.” – Hallie Jackson “Blockbuster new reporting.” – Nicolle Wallace “Bracing new revelations.” – Brian Williams “Bombshell reporting.” – David Muir The true story of what took place in Donald Trump’s White House during a disastrous 2020 has never before been told in full. What was really going on around the president, as the government failed to contain the coronavirus and over half a million Americans perished? Who was influencing Trump after he refused to concede an election he had clearly lost and spread lies about election fraud? To answer these questions, Phil Rucker and Carol Leonnig reveal a dysfunctional and bumbling presidency’s inner workings in unprecedented, stunning detail. Focused on Trump and the key players around him—the doctors, generals, senior advisers, and Trump family members— Rucker and Leonnig provide a forensic account of the most devastating year in a presidency like no other. Their sources were in the room as time and time again Trump put his personal gain ahead of the good of the country. These witnesses to history tell the story of him longing to deploy the military to the streets of American cities to crush the protest movement in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, all to bolster his image of strength ahead of the election. These sources saw firsthand his refusal to take the threat of the coronavirus seriously—even to the point of allowing himself and those around him to be infected. This is a story of a nation sabotaged—economically, medically, and politically—by its own leader, culminating with a groundbreaking, minute-by-minute account of exactly what went on in the Capitol building on January 6, as Trump’s supporters so easily breached the most sacred halls of American democracy, and how the president reacted. With unparalleled access, Rucker and Leonnig explain and expose exactly who enabled—and who foiled—Trump as he sought desperately to cling to power. A classic and heart-racing work of investigative reporting, this book is destined to be read and studied by citizens and historians alike for decades to come.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR • A “furious and addictive new novel” (The New York Times) about mothers and daughters, and one woman's midlife reckoning as she flees her suburban life. “Exhilarating ... reads like a burning fever dream. A virtuosic, singular and very funny portrait of a woman seeking sanity and purpose in a world gone mad.” —The New York Times Book Review Samantha Raymond's life has begun to come apart: her mother is ill, her teenage daughter is increasingly remote, and at fifty-two she finds herself staring into "the Mids"—that hour of supreme wakefulness between three and four in the morning in which women of a certain age suddenly find themselves contemplating motherhood, mortality, and, in this case, the state of our unraveling nation. When she falls in love with a beautiful, decrepit house in a hardscrabble neighborhood in Syracuse, she buys it on a whim and flees her suburban life—and her family—as she grapples with how to be a wife, a mother, and a daughter, in a country that is coming apart at the seams. Dana Spiotta's Wayward is a stunning novel about aging, about the female body, and about female complexity in contemporary America. Probing and provocative, brainy and sensual, it is a testament to our weird times, to reforms and resistance and utopian wishes, and to the beauty of ruins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in his campaign, Donald Trump boasted that 'I know words. I have the best words', yet despite these assurances his speech style has sown conflict even as it has powered his meteoric rise. If the Trump era feels like a political crisis to many, it is also a linguistic one. Trump has repeatedly alarmed people around the world, while exciting his fan-base with his unprecedented rhetorical style, shock-tweeting, and weaponized words. Using many detailed examples, this fascinating and highly topical book reveals how Trump's rallying cries, boasts, accusations, and mockery enlist many of his supporters into his alternate reality. From Trump's relationship to the truth, to his use of gesture, to the anti-immigrant tenor of his language, it illuminates the less obvious mechanisms by which language in the Trump era has widened divisions along lines of class, gender, race, international relations, and even the sense of truth itself.

Trump ✓ Here is Trump in action--how he runs his organization and how he runs his life--as he meets the people he needs to meet, chats with family and friends, clashes with enemies, and challenges conventional thinking. But even a maverick plays by rules, and Trump has formulated time-tested guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest accomplishments; he shatters myths; he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker's art. And throughout, Trump talks--really talks--about how he does it. Trump: The Art of the Deal is an unguarded look at the mind of a brilliant entrepreneur--the ultimate read for anyone interested in the man behind the spotlight.

Book excerpt: With a new epilogue on filibuster battles under the Biden administration THE CASE FOR ENDING THE FILIBUSTER "A truly excellent book… blistering and persuasive.” —Ezra Klein, New York Times An insider’s account of how politicians representing a radical white minority of Americans have used “the world’s greatest deliberative body” to hijack our democracy. Our democracy is under assault from homegrown authoritarians, with most observers blaming Donald Trump and the Republican Party that submitted to him. Yet as Adam Jentleson shows, the problem not only goes back to the nineteenth century, but is less about the presidency than it is about our nation’s most venerated institution: the United States Senate. A revelatory history of minority rule in America as expressed through the Senate filibuster, Kill Switch shows that white conservatives have long relied on the filibuster—which is not featured in the Constitution, and which, as Jentleson demonstrates, the Framers would have opposed—to shut down attempts to create a multiracial democracy. Featuring a new epilogue on filibuster battles under the Biden administration, Kill Switch will remain an essential warning about the costs of empowering this nation’s right-wing minority. • “Jentleson understands the inner workings of the institution, down to the most granular details, showing precisely how arcane procedural rules can be leveraged to dramatic effect.” —Jennifer Szalai, New York Times • “Careful and thorough and exacting.” —Michael Tomasky, New York Review of Books • “[An] excellent, surprising new book.” —Benjamin Wallace-Wells, The New Yorker

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together
