Book excerpt: Phyllis Hoffman knew something was wrong with her child from the start of her pregnancy. When her baby girl was twelve months old, their pediatrician said, ?Troy is fine. She has a neurotic Jewish mother.? When Troy was two, a professor at the University of Miami told Phyllis and her husband to put Troy away and forget about her. Despite the advice, this mother never stopped trying to do what she knew was best for her daughter. Their experiences in the public school system were at times harrowing and outrageous. Visits to specialists, hospitals, and major universities resulted in conflicting diagnoses. When Troy was six, she and Phyllis flew to Wichita, Kansas, to enroll in a special school. Phyllis struggled to reassure Troy that she was loved and would be safe in that strange place. Four years later, a psychiatrist there told Phyllis that Troy had childhood schizophrenia and that she was the schizophrenogenic mother. A mother's frustration evolved into inspiration. Phyllis earned her Master's degree, taught children with disabilities and then established a private, nonprofit school for children with special needs. Twenty-five years later, her dream of a supervised apartment community was realized. Butterfly Girl is about their struggles ? with each other and with the system. It's not over.

It is a terrible war with casualties on all sides as well as strained relations between allies, whose consequences become tragedies. In Troy you will find heroism and hatred, love and loss, revenge and regret, desire and despair. It is these human passions, written bloodily in the sands of a distant shore, that still speak to us today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Tommy Davidson is a journeyman performer. He knows the how and the what and his timing is off the hook. He's one of my favorite performers. Oh and did I mention he's funny, REALLY funny.” —Whoopi Goldberg In this revealing memoir, Tommy Davidson shares his unique perspective on making it in Hollywood, being an integral part of television history, on fame and family, and on living a life that has never been black and white—just funny and true . . . Abandoned as an infant on the streets of Greenville, Mississippi, and rescued by a loving white family, Tommy Davidson spent most of his childhood unaware that he was different from his brother and sister. All that changed as he came of age in a society of racial barriers—ones that he was soon to help break. On a fledgling network, Tommy joined the cast of In Living Color, alongside other relative newcomers all united by an ingenious throng of Wayans siblings, poised to break new ground. Now Tommy gives readers the never-before-told behind-the-scenes story of the first show born of the Hip Hop Nation: from its incredible rise, to his own creation of such unforgettable characters as Sweet Tooth Jones and dead-on impressions of Sammy Davis, Jr., Michael Jackson, M.C. Hammer and Sugar Ray Leonard, and appearing in such classic sketches as “Homie The Clown,” the “Hey Mon, family,” and the “Ugly Woman,” through guest-star skirmishes (and black eyes) to backstage tensions and the eventual fall of this pop-culture touchstone. He reveals his own nascent career on the stand-up circuit, as well as reflections on working with Spike Lee, Halle Berry, Chris Rock, and Jada Pinkett Smith. He also shares his very personal story of living with—and being inspired and empowered by—two distinct family histories. Told with humor and hard-won honesty, Living in Color is a bracing, illuminating, and remarkable success story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaolin Brew: Race, Comics, and the Evolution of the Superhero looks at how the comic book industry developed from a white perspective and how minority characters were and are viewed through a stereotypical white gaze. Further, the book explores how voices of color have launched a shift in the industry, taking nonwhite characters who were originally viewed through a white lens and situating them outside the framework of whiteness. The financial success of Blaxploitation and Kung Fu films in the early 1970s led to major comics publishers creating, for the first time, Black and Asian superhero characters who headlined their own comics. The introduction of Black and Asian main characters, who previously only served as guest stars or sidekicks, launched a new kind of engagement between comics companies and minority characters and readers. However, scripted as they were by white writers, these characters were mired in stereotypes. Author Troy D. Smith focuses on Asian, Black, and Latinx representation in the comic industry and how it has evolved over the years. Smith explores topics that include Orientalism, whitewashing, Black respectability politics, the model minority myth, and political controversies facing fandoms. In particular, Smith examines how fans take the superheroes they grew up with—such as Luke Cage, Black Lightning, and Shang Chi—and turn them into the characters they wished they had as children. Shaolin Brew delves into the efforts of fans of color who urged creators to make these characters more realistic. This refining process increased as more writers and artists of color broke into the industry, bringing their own perspectives to the characters. As many of these characters transitioned from page to screen, a new generation of writers, artists, and readers have cooperated to evolve one-dimensional stereotypes into multifaceted, dynamic heroes.

But the years that followed held several obstacles in store for Roy. He underwent heart surgery, broke his neck in a terrible fall, endured several spinal surgeries, and survived prostate cancer. With the power of the Holy Spirit, he overcame it all and still found time to serve God, which he has been doing for over 50 years! “From the Unadilla Valley and Beyond with God “will encourage you, inspire you, and increase your faith. This memoir is a spirited reminder that God is with you…always!! “My friends, God has brought me through the deepest valley that I can comprehend. I know that my God not only brought me down into the valley; He never ever left me. He brought me out, and then back up on the hillside. Praise His name!”
