Book excerpt: Trouting on the Brule River is a literary account of genteel sportsmen's fishing expeditions during the summers of 1875 and 1877. Originally published in the Chicago Sunday Times and the Chicago Sunday Tribune, the book's chapters tell how a group of Chicago lawyers traveled by rail, foot and canoe to destinations along the Menominee, Michigami, and Brule Rivers in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The author describes the delights of fly-fishing in lyrical detail, along with bobbing for pike, shooting rapids, deer and duck hunting, and encounters with birds and animals. He romanticizes the expedition's Indian guides, believing that they lived in a state of nature.

White Rapids--Trout Brooklet--Pike River And WaniTan--Sixty Islands--Yellow Dogs--Ravens--High As Parjdler--Jim Kaquotash--Lone Pine Camp--Evening Scene--Lower Menominee--Doctor Atdrews--The End--St. Peter's Blessing. It was not a long paddle we had of it to White Rapids. High and I took to the pathway through the meadow-like stretch of ground, thinly fringed on the bank with small trees, casting a meagre ragged shade, and left the Indians to work the canoe through the shoals and rapids. The trouting fever showed symptoms on High as soon as we touched the trail. He recalled his reminiscences of the rather difficult, but not unpleasant sport before, at the brooklet. It was easy to presage his wishes from the tone of his recollections, and from his solicitude about the signs of the weather, of which he took constant observations from the clouds. Before the fever had risen to its climacteric, the sky was more ominous of a shower, and, even his enthusiasm for a trial of the fly, among clumps of bushes and thickets of alder, oozed away on account of the probable moisture of the attempt. He admitted it would hardly pay to wet his jacket for the trout, and thought it preferable to take the chances of rain with the tent at hand to be landed for ready shelter. Though, as this was the last known possibility of trout on the nearly ended trip, he wavered and faltered in will and purpose till we depossibleized the venture by getting him actually embarked and under way. At the mouth of Pike river, the pine-wood bower or boudoir of the dusky Indian maid and kennel of the Cerberus dog were shut up and deserted. Paul was a trifle emotional on this occasion, possibly expecting to have had a brief scene of eyes looking love to eyes that would..

This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War experiences of Albert C. Ellithorpe, a Caucasian Union Army officer commanding the tri-racial First Indian Home Guards, illuminate remarkable and understudied facets of campaigning west of the Mississippi River. Major Ellithorpe’s unit—comprised primarily of refugee Muscogee Creek and Seminole Indians and African Americans who served as interpreters—fought principally in Arkansas and Indian Territory, isolated from the larger currents of the Civil War. Using Ellithorpe’s journal and his series of Chicago Evening Journal articles as her main sources, M. Jane Johansson unravels this exceptional account, providing one of the fullest examinations available on a mixed-race Union regiment serving in the border region of the West. Ellithorpe's insightful observations on Indians and civilians as well as the war in the trans-Mississippi theater provide a rare glimpse into a largely forgotten aspect of the conflict. He wrote extensively about the role of Indian troops, who served primarily as scouts and skirmishers, and on the nature of guerrilla warfare in the West. Ellithorpe also exposed internal problems in his regiment; some of his most dramatic entries concern his own charges against Caucasian officers, one of whom allegedly stole money from the unit's African American interpreters. Compiled here for the first time, Ellithorpe’s commentary on the war adds a new chapter to our understanding of America’s most complicated and tragic conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of sportsmen past come to life in History Afield, an account of the many and varied sporting pursuits that are part of the Wisconsin tradition. Author and outdoorsman Robert Willging shares more than two dozen tales of Wisconsin sporting history, highlighting the hunt for waterfowl, upland birds, and deer; trout fishing in wild north Wisconsin rivers; and recreating at early Wisconsin lakeside resorts. Anecdotes of fishing exploits on our plentiful waterways and presidential visits to northern Wisconsin reveal a unique slice of sporting culture, and chapters on live decoys and the American Water Spaniel demonstrate the human-animal bond that has played such a large part in that history. Tales of nature’s fury include a detailed account of the famous Armistice Day storm, as well as the dangers of ice fishing on Lake Superior. These historical musings and perspectives on sporting ethos provide a strong sense of the lifestyle that Willging has preserved for our new century. Featuring first-hand interviews and a variety of historic photos depicting the Wisconsin sporting life, History Afield shows how the intimate relationship between humans and nature shaped this important part of the state’s heritage.
