Book Synopsis Women of the Twelfth Century, Volume 2 by : Georges Duby
Download or read book Women of the Twelfth Century, Volume 2 written by Georges Duby and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, one of the greatest medieval historians of our time continues his rich and illuminating inquiry into the lives of twelfth-century women. Georges Duby bases his account on a twelfth-century genre that commemorated the virtues of noblewomen who had died and the roles they came to play in the history of their lineage. From these genealogical works a vivid picture emerges of the lives these women led, the values they held, and the way in which they were viewed by the ecclesiastical and chivalric writers who immortalized them. The first section outlines the ways in which the dead—in both memory and legend—served to bond noble society in the twelfth century. Drawing on the Gesta by Dudo of Saint Quentin, the second section reflects on the roles that wives, concubines, and other women played during times of war and in the great exchanges of power that established the grand lineages of the Middle Ages. The third section reconstructs women as wives, mothers, and widows through the work of Lambert, Priest of Ardres.

[A] joy to read.” —Elizabeth Strout, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Amy and Isabelle and Olive Kitteridge Sara is sixteen and pregnant. Her once-devoted boyfriend seems to have disappeared, so she decides her best and only option is an open adoption with George and Eva, a couple desperate for a child. When it seems that Sara cannot let go, Eva and George make a drastic decision, with devastating consequences for all of them. “Caroline Leavitt’s writing is so fluid, her characters so well realized, I found myself reading Girls In Trouble nearly until the sun came up. When I was finished I felt as though I had made a new friend, and had stayed up all night listening to her stories.” —Pam Houston, award-winning author of Cowboys are My Weakness “The characters in Girls in Trouble are blazingly knowable, and it is Leavitt’s sympathy that gives her novel both its page-turning momentum and its dignity.” —Washington Post “In this wrenching exploration of parent-child relationships, Leavitt captures the tensions and rhythms of family attachments. . . . Ripe for movie adaptation, this will appeal to fans of Jacqueline Mitchard’s novels.” —Booklist “An unflinching depiction of maternal need and the dynamics of adoption.” —Publishers Weekly “Utterly engrossing and richly satisfying.” —Margot Livesey, New York Times–bestselling author of The Boy in the Field

This volume focuses on women and girls in Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings. As in her successful and widely read first volume, Gafney uses her own translations and offers midrashic interpretations of the biblical text rooted in the African American preaching and rabbinic traditions to tell the stories of a variety of female characters, many of whom are often overlooked and nameless. Grounded in rigorous scholarship, this volume employs solid womanist and feminist approaches to biblical interpretation and the sociohistorical culture of the ancient Afro-Asiatic world, expanding conversations of and about biblical interpretation.

Book Synopsis Sex and Race, Volume 2 by : J. A. Rogers
Download or read book Sex and Race, Volume 2 written by J. A. Rogers and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Sex and Race series, first published in the 1940s, historian Joel Augustus Rogers questioned the concept of race, the origins of racial differentiation, and the root of the "color problem." Rogers surmised that a large percentage of ethnic differences are the result of sociological factors and in these volumes he gathered what he called "the bran of history"—the uncollected, unexamined history of black people—in the hope that these neglected parts of history would become part of the mainstream body of Western history. Drawing on a vast amount of research, Rogers was attempting to point out the absurdity of racial divisions. Indeed his belief in one race—humanity—precluded the idea of several different ethnic races. The series marshals the data he had collected as evidence to prove his underlying humanistic thesis: that people were one large family without racial boundaries. Self-trained and self-published, Rogers and his work were immensely popular and influential during his day, even cited by Malcolm X. The books are presented here in their original editions.
