Book excerpt: Meg and Jamie Bains spend twelve hours a day sewing shirts in a loud, dim room filled with row after row of poor women and children tending their sewing machines. They're lucky to have the work. In the 1870s Canada suffers from a terrible Depression, and the Bains have travelled the country looking for work since their father died, finally ending up in this dark mill in Montreal. Soon they discover they've only been hired to replace workers striking to raise their rock-bottom wages. This knowledge, along with the cold and hunger and seemingly endless workdays, starts to wear them down. As they come to know their co-workers, however, the find they're not alone in their misery. Working together they find it's possible to make change, even in the dark world of the oppressive mills. Set against the grim background of Canada's 19th century industrial cities, Trouble at Lachine Mill is the story of two young people's perseverance in the face of incredible squalour and adversity. The book is illustrated with a section of photographs chronicling the industrial city of Montreal in the late-19th century. This is the fourth book in the Bains series of historical novels, well-researched, action-filled narratives following the travels of one family across Canada--from Newfoundland to Alberta-- in search of a better life during the hard times of the 1870s.

Jamie and Kate Bains are ready to help their friend, North West Mounted Police constable Patrick McNeil, drive a herd of cattle north to the foothills country of Canada. It is a wild and dangerous frontier. The cowboys who ride with them are rough and independent men. The restless Blackfoot Nation controls the territory they must cross, and outlaws lurk in the foothills waiting for their opportunity to strike. Only skill, determination, and raw courage will save Kate and Jamie if they hope to make it back to the foothills alive. Ambush in the Foothills is the ninth book in Bill Freeman's best-selling series of historical novels featuring the Bains family. It is illustrated with photographs of the period showing the people who lived in the West and describing their work and their way of life.

Book excerpt: The establishment of a consumer society in Australia has not been a particularly well explored area of academic inquiry. My interests lie in the concepts and meanings that underlie the material world; ideas like, in the words of Madonna, "I am a material girl and I live in a material world" (terminology taken to be not gender specific), the classic graffiti paraphrasing of Descartes: I shop therefore I am or perhaps simply in the "world of goods" in the more academically respectable terms of Douglas and Isherwood (1979). This book arises out of my longstanding interest in the early colonial period in Australia. In part it represents an extension of the purely "historical" research conducted for my Master's thesis in the Department of History at the University of Sydney which explored aspects of the diet, health and lived experience of con victs and immigrants during their voyages to the Australian colonies within the timeframe 1837 to 1839 (Staniforth, 1993a). More importantly, it is the culmina tion of more than twenty-five years involvement in the excavation of shipwreck sites in Australia starting with James Matthews (1841) in 1974, through the test excavation of William Salthouse in 1982, continuing with my involvement between 1985 and 1994 in the excavation of Sydney Cove (1797) and most recently with shore-based whaling stations and whaling shipwreck sites. In this respect, this book may be seen as an example of what Ian Hodder (1986, p.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Lower Canada rebellions of 1837-8 assured the survival of the Seminary. Assuming a reinforced social and ideological role in industrializing Montreal, the Seminary benefited from new corporate powers, rights of recruitment, and income, while its expanding social role ensured its protection by an appreciate bourgeoisie. Emphasizing economic rather than religious history, Brian Young's study compares the Seminary's pre-industrial forms of income to its new capitalist revenues from land sales, subdivision developments, bonds, and rentier income from office, warehousing, and urban-housing properties. Its changing income required new forms of management and the priest-manager was eventually assisted by an accountant, architect, surveyor, clerk, and several notaries and lawyers. The Seminary played a central role in the development of popular schools in Montreal, and in financing and directing social institutions such as hospitals, newspapers, libraries, and national societies, the Seminary of Montreal legitimized the changing class structure of industrializing Montreal.

Book excerpt: In the spring of 1873, Meg and John Bains are ready to return home from a winter working in a lumber camp when they are lured into a trap and shanghaied as crew on a leaky old square-rigged sailing ship in Quebec City. The windjammer is under-manned and the captain is a tyrant, making the voyage a difficult one. But danger is balanced by the excitement of travelling first to Jamaica to take on sugar cane and then to Liverpool. The crossing is dramatic and the trip back to Halifax is even more adventurous as the captain makes a deal to carry 350 immigrants to the new world. It takes five weeks before the crew of the Scotian find themselves safe upon the shores of Nova Scotia.

These are structures that have changed how architecture is thought of in Montreal, inpired transformations in neighborhoods around them, used materials innovatively, or been built with notable economy. A two-page spread covers each project, with a concise descriptive text alongside photos, drawings, and floor plans. Each building is presented by quarter or neighborhood, encouraging readers to develop their own self-guided walking tours. The front and back flaps fold out into maps to guide visitors through the highlighted quartiers.
