Book excerpt: Following his salvation of the Homo Colossus species, and several other even more endangered species, Wil established an empire that became known as the Celestian Empire after a long naming competition sponsored by Wils and Jens ship, Firefly who turned out to be canny investor. Numerous species on hundreds of planets participated in the competition, with the ten million dollar prize being won by a teen-aged human girl from the original Earth. The Empire grew powerful under Wils strong leadership. Wil kept his hareem, including his sister Jen, and his great aunt Ruth and his grandmother Glee and his favorite mother, Rika. He had two hundred five mothers in all. The harem was extended by five additional female giants, Stephanie, Emmanuelle, Constanza, and Arabella and Brigitte. This took the total in numbers to seven hundred twenty five, but the gain from the giants was greater because each was nine meters tall, and each was dedicated to Wil alone. Their brother, Michael, was one meter taller. Not all of the concubines were Wils mothers. Wil made few more girls. Instead, the Imperial Palace rang to the sound of growing boys and girls fathered by him at first, and then by his male offspring. He imported some new boys, humans and Gideonese, but mostly HCs. Amber repaid Aisha, and to some extent Wil, by showing Aisha the secrets of her double vagina. With a specialized womb for boys and another for girls, Aisha at last had real children, of both sexes, fathered by Wil. The last seventeen confiscated concubines joyously took service contracts which pledged lifetime bonds to Wil, although not so strongly as the giants pledge. Male giants were too big to penetrate other species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly fragmented and disconnected society, dogs are often treated not as pets, but as family members and human surrogates. The New Work of Dogs profiles a dozen such relationships in a New Jersey town, like the story of Harry, a Welsh corgi who provides sustaining emotional strength for a woman battling terminal breast cancer; Cherokee, companion of a man who has few friends and doesn’t know how to talk to his family; the Divorced Dogs Club, whose funny, acerbic, and sometimes angry women turn to their dogs to help them rebuild their lives; and Betty Jean, the frantic founder of a tiny rescue group that has saved five hundred dogs from abuse or abandonment in recent years. Drawn from hundreds of interviews and conversations with dog lovers and canine professionals, The New Work of Dogs combines compelling personal narratives with a penetrating look at human/animal attachment, and it presents a vivid portrait of a community—and, by extension, an entire nation—that is turning to its pets for emotional support and stability in a changing and uncertain world.

With its chewable hearts and candied lips threatening to forever transform the delicate social balance and the very lives of each and every member of the city's underground, Sweet Candy is poised to ignite the tenuous powder keg that is life, love and lust in Sweetville. But could the enigmatic back-alley surgeon Julius Kast and his partnership with a peculiar cult be the spark that lights the fuse once and for all? And how will their actions affect the life of a young woman named Trixie who is seeking salvation through transformation? Take a remarkable journey that's equal parts irreverent social commentary, revisionist dystopia, dark fantasy and horrifying reality when you travel to the unforgettable world of Sweetville's counterculture where a host of sometimes dangerous, often deviant and always dark secrets are waiting to be revealed. Such secrets refuse to be confined to Sweetville. But instead will come home with you. Changing everything. Forever… Praise for Secrets of the Weird: "Secrets of the Weird is a harrowing walk through a landscape populated by modern horrors and lit only by failing neon, where the only saving graces are whatever bravery we can summon up from within and whatever kindness we can muster toward our fellow outcasts, and Chad Stroup is the best possible guide a reader could ask for." -- Jeremy P. Bushnell, author of The Insides and The Weirdness "I found Secrets of the Weird to be an engaging and fascinating read. It is a highly unusual, admirably creative foray into a deeply, deeply disturbing world of fiction which nonetheless resonates with modern reality." -- Hal Bodner, author of The Trouble with Hairy and Bite Club! "Insane in the most amazingly sublime hallucinogenic way. Every word, every setting, every character is a garishly intelligent choice. This is the most bizarre but incredible mash up of New Jack City, Blade Runner and Game of Thrones. In an era of non-binary gender and fluid sexuality this is a relevant and timely tale." -- Tracy Lee Palmer, Signal Horizon Proudly presented by Grey Matter Press, the home of multiple Bram Stoker Award-nominated volumes of horror. Book excerpt: Pianist George Shearing is that rare thing, a European jazz musician who became a household name in the US, as a result of the "Shearing sound"—the recordings of his historic late 1940s quintet. Together with his unique "locked hands" approach to playing the piano, Shearing's quintet with guitar and vibraphone in close harmony to his own playing revolutionized small group jazz, and ensured that after seven years as Melody Maker's top British pianist, he achieved even greater success in America. His compositions have been recorded by everyone from Sarah Vaughan to Miles Davis, and his best known pieces include "Lullaby of Birdland", "She" and "Conception". His story is all the more remarkable because Shearing was born blind. His candid reminiscences include a behind the scenes experience of New York's 52nd Street in its heyday, as well as memories of a vast roll-call of professional colleagues that includes all the great names in jazz.

But her bliss threatens to unravel on the very first day of their luxurious honeymoon cruise, when Skye becomes convinced that she has glimpsed her mother on board! Surely even momzilla May wouldn’t have manipulated Wally into booking the same trip that her knitting group is taking…or would she? May’s possible presence can’t cool Skye and Wally’s ardor on their personal Love Boat, but discovering knitting expert Guinevere Stallings as she lies dying from a stab wound leaves them untangling the clues of yet another murder investigation rather than getting tangled in the sheets. Since Skye found the body, she’s considered a top suspect, but she’s far from the only one. Guinevere’s imperious ways needled nearly everyone, and she left an impressive number of enemies. It’s up to the crafty newlyweds to figure out which of the wronged parties was angry enough to cast Guinevere off…permanently.
