Book excerpt: The Rotating Target Neutron Source (RTNS-II) uses a 360-keV deuteron beam and the 3He(d, n)4He reaction to generate 14-MeV neutrons. The neutrons are used for fusion materials damage studies. The tritium target consists of a band of titanium tritide on copper alloy substrates of 23- or 50-cm diameter. During operation, the substrates are internally cooled and rotated at approx. 4000 rpm to withstand beam intensities in excess of 100 mA. Neutron production data have been accumulated for fifty-eight 23-cm and five 50-cm targets. From these data, using a non-linear least-squares fitting procedure, target performance parameters have been obtained which permit a quantitative comparison of individual targets. Average parameters are obtained for the 23- and 50-cm targets.

A brief discussion is given of the methods used in production of the TiT2 targets as well as their performance and tritium handling at RTNS-II. The various types of non-interactive beam diagnostics presently in use at the neutron sources are outlined. The on-line computer system which provides a time history of an irradiation and records target performance is described. Examples are listed of several representative experimental programs which have been carried out thus far at RTNS-II. These include both active and passive experiments. Finally, several of the major improvements to the facility made since the beginning of the experimental program are given.

Previous letters of inquiry to Mound also delineate a need for recovery of tritium from expended RTNS-II targets. As explained in this proposal, the tritided target manufacturing and tritium recovery can be accomplished in an efficient and timely manner at Mound Facility. Mound has been a major tritium handling facility for over 20 yr. Multigram quantities of tritium are routinely handled in various production, recovery, research, and development processes. Mound is widely recognized as a leader in the design, installation, and operation of high-purity glovebox atmosphere systems, and tritium containment, effluent control, and waste packaging systems. Demonstrated performance and experience in these strategic technology areas makes this facility ideally suited for meeting LLL's tritided accelerator target needs. After consolidation and evaluation of various inputs of information, the authors feel confident that Mound can fabricate and recover RTNS-II targets to meet LLL requirements. This proposal, therefore, outlines their plan for performing this work and requests that Mound Facility be designated by LLL as the fabrication and recovery site for large-diameter fully tritided accelerator targets.

Book excerpt: Experience with neutron sources consisting of air-insulated 400 kV deuteron accelerators and tritium targets which rotate at 5000 rpm is reported. These accelerators are part of the Rotating Target Neutron Source-II (RTNS-II) facility. A review of the accelerator design is given. Operation of the prototype accelerator using hydrogen beams is discussed in detail. The parameters are tabulated for the first accelerator operated as a neutron source in November, 1978. Additional terminal pumping has reduced the radiation level from bremsstrahlung by at least a factor of ten. Ion source performance with deuterium has not been as good as that obtained with hydrogen. Beam divergence at the acceleration column exit is also observed. Future efforts include the fabrication of large diameter targets and design changes to improve source operation.

Book excerpt: The Isotope Research Materials Laboratory (IRML) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) prepares tritium targets that are used to produce an intense beam of 14.5 MeV neutrons by the 3H(2H, 1n)4He reaction. The intense beams of 14.5 MeV neutrons are used in programs involving cancer research, materials evaluation, and materials identification. The tritium targets required by researchers have ranged in size from 1-cm diam to 50-cm diam and have contained from 3.7 x 104 MBq to 2.2 x 108 MBq of tritium. Important parameters in the performance of tritium targets, when bombarded with deuterons, include target lifetime and neutron output. These parameters are heavily dependent on the host metal layer used to form the tritide compound and the gas-to-metal loading of the host material. Fabrication procedures used in preparing titanium tritide targets with subsequent gas-to-metal determinations are described.
