Book excerpt: Learning First, Technology Second offers teachers a classroom-tested, easy-to-use framework to help them move from arbitrary uses of technology to thoughtful ways of adding value to student learning. Learning with technology doesn’t happen because a specific tool “revolutionizes” education. It happens when proven teaching strategies intersect with technology tools, and yet it’s not uncommon for teachers to use a tool because it’s “fun” or because the developer promises it will help students learn. This book includes: • An introduction to the Triple E Framework that helps teachers engage students in time-on-task learning, enhance learning experiences beyond traditional means and extend learning opportunities to bridge classroom learning with students’ everyday lives. • Effective strategies for using technology to create authentic learning experiences for their students. • Case studies to guide appropriate tech integration. • A lesson planning template to show teachers how to effectively frame technology choices and apply them in instruction. The companion jump start guide based on this book is Engage, Enhance, Extend: Start Creating Authentic Lessons With the Triple E Framework.

Book excerpt: In Contributions to Automorphic Forms, Geometry, and Number Theory, Haruzo Hida, Dinakar Ramakrishnan, and Freydoon Shahidi bring together a distinguished group of experts to explore automorphic forms, principally via the associated L-functions, representation theory, and geometry. Because these themes are at the cutting edge of a central area of modern mathematics, and are related to the philosophical base of Wiles' proof of Fermat's last theorem, this book will be of interest to working mathematicians and students alike. Never previously published, the contributions to this volume expose the reader to a host of difficult and thought-provoking problems. Each of the extraordinary and noteworthy mathematicians in this volume makes a unique contribution to a field that is currently seeing explosive growth. New and powerful results are being proved, radically and continually changing the field's make up. Contributions to Automorphic Forms, Geometry, and Number Theory will likely lead to vital interaction among researchers and also help prepare students and other young mathematicians to enter this exciting area of pure mathematics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a theory of abstract duality pairs which arises by replacing the scalar field by an Abelian topological group in the theory of dual pair of vector spaces. Examples of abstract duality pairs are vector valued series, spaces of vector valued measures, spaces of vector valued integrable functions, spaces of linear operators and vector valued sequence spaces. These examples give rise to numerous applications such as abstract versions of the Orlicz-Pettis Theorem on subseries convergent series, the Uniform Boundedness Principle, the Banach-Steinhaus Theorem, the Nikodym Convergence theorems and the Vitali-Hahn-Saks Theorem from measure theory and the Hahn-Schur Theorem from summability. There are no books on the current market which cover the material in this book. Readers will find interesting functional analysis and the many applications to various topics in real analysis.

Book excerpt: The 17 invited research articles in this volume, all written by leading experts in their respective fields, are dedicated to the great French mathematician Jean Leray. A wide range of topics with significant new results---detailed proofs---are presented in the areas of partial differential equations, complex analysis, and mathematical physics. Key subjects are: * Treated from the mathematical physics viewpoint: nonlinear stability of an expanding universe, the compressible Euler equation, spin groups and the Leray--Maslov index, * Linked to the Cauchy problem: an intermediate case between effective hyperbolicity and the Levi condition, global Cauchy--Kowalewski theorem in some Gevrey classes, the analytic continuation of the solution, necessary conditions for hyperbolic systems, well posedness in the Gevrey class, uniformly diagonalizable systems and reduced dimension, and monodromy of ramified Cauchy problem. Additional articles examine results on: * Local solvability for a system of partial differential operators, * The hypoellipticity of second order operators, * Differential forms and Hodge theory on analytic spaces, * Subelliptic operators and sub- Riemannian geometry. Book excerpt: The problem of classifying the finite dimensional simple Lie algebras over fields of characteristic p > 0 is a long standing one. Work on this question has been directed by the Kostrikin Shafarevich Conjecture of 1966, which states that over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 5 a finite dimensional restricted simple Lie algebra is classical or of Cartan type. This conjecture was proved for p > 7 by Block and Wilson in 1988. The generalization of the Kostrikin-Shafarevich Conjecture for the general case of not necessarily restricted Lie algebras and p > 7 was announced in 1991 by Strade and Wilson and eventually proved by Strade in 1998. The final Block-Wilson-Strade-Premet Classification Theorem is a landmark result of modern mathematics and can be formulated as follows: Every simple finite dimensional simple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 3 is of classical, Cartan, or Melikian type. This is the second part of a three-volume book about the classification of the simple Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic > 3. The first volume contains the methods, examples and a first classification result. This second volume presents insight in the structure of tori of Hamiltonian and Melikian algebras. Based on sandwich element methods due to A. I. Kostrikin and A. A. Premet and the investigations of filtered and graded Lie algebras, a complete proof for the classification of absolute toral rank 2 simple Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic > 3 is given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum computers promise dramatic advantages in processing speed over currently available computer systems. Quantum computing offers great promise in a wide variety of computing and scientific research, including Quantum cryptography, machine learning, computational biology, renewable energy, computer-aided drug design, generative chemistry, and any scientific or enterprise application that requires computation speed or reach beyond the limits of current conventional computer systems. Foundations of Quantum Programming, Second Edition discusses how programming methodologies and technologies developed for current computers can be extended for quantum computers, along with new programming methodologies and technologies that can effectively exploit the unique power of quantum computing. The Second Edition includes two new chapters describing programming models and methodologies for parallel and distributed quantum computers. The author has also included two new chapters to introduce Quantum Machine Learning and its programming models – parameterized and differential quantum programming. In addition, the First Edition's preliminaries chapter has been split into three chapters, with two sections for quantum Turing machines and random access stored program machines added to give the reader a more complete picture of quantum computational models. Finally, several other new techniques are introduced in the Second Edition, including invariants of quantum programs and their generation algorithms, and abstract interpretation of quantum programs. - Demystifies the theory of quantum programming using a step-by-step approach - Includes methodologies, techniques, and tools for the development, analysis, and verification of quantum programs and quantum cryptographic protocols - Covers the interdisciplinary nature of quantum programming by providing preliminaries from quantum mechanics, mathematics, and computer science, and pointing out its potential applications to quantum engineering and physics - Presents a coherent and self-contained treatment that will be valuable for academic and industrial researchers and developers - Adds new developments such as parallel and distributed quantum programming; and introduces several new program analysis techniques such as invariants generation and abstract interpretation

Of particular note are various inspiring interactions between number theory and low-dimensional topology discussed in most papers in this volume. For example, quite interesting are the use of arithmetic methods in knot theory and the use of topological methods in Galois theory. Also, expository papers in both number theory and topology included in the volume can help a wide group of readers to understand both fields as well as the interesting analogies and relations that bring them together.

Book excerpt: Here is an introduction to the theory of quantum groups with emphasis on the spectacular connections with knot theory and Drinfeld's recent fundamental contributions. It presents the quantum groups attached to SL2 as well as the basic concepts of the theory of Hopf algebras. Coverage also focuses on Hopf algebras that produce solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation and provides an account of Drinfeld's elegant treatment of the monodromy of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations.
