Download or read book Prairie Justice written by Wayne Sumner and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1928, the body of George Edey was discovered on his Saskatchewan farm, leading to the swift arrest of a deaf and mentally disabled farmhand named Mike Hack. Following a three-day murder trial, Hack was quickly convicted and sentenced to death. Denied clemency, in January 1929 he was hanged in the courtyard of the Regina Jail at twenty-seven years of age and buried in an unmarked grave. Prairie Justice dissects this case, revealing its implications for important themes in the history of the Canadian criminal justice system. Wayne Sumner meticulously traces the narrative of the case, analysing each step from the initial murder investigation to the subsequent arrest, trial, conviction, denial of clemency, and execution of the man accused. Drawing on a personal connection to the case rooted in his family history – his father’s hometown was the village where the crime occurred, and both his grandfather and great-grandfather were involved in the investigation – Sumner uncovers deeper and more universal reasons to share the story. The book punctuates the narrative with insightful analysis on key criminal justice themes illustrated by the case: unfitness to stand trial, the defence of insanity, ineffective assistance of counsel, wrongful conviction, and miscarriage of justice. Ultimately, Prairie Justice exposes how access to justice can be merely illusory for the poor and marginalized.
Book Synopsis Corn Kings and One-Horse Thieves by : James Krohe Jr
Download or read book Corn Kings and One-Horse Thieves written by James Krohe Jr and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, ISHS Annual Award for a Scholarly Publication, 2018 In Corn Kings and One-Horse Thieves, James Krohe Jr. presents an engaging history of an often overlooked region, filled with fascinating stories and surprising facts about Illinois’s midsection. Krohe describes in lively prose the history of mid-Illinois from the Woodland period of prehistory until roughly 1960, covering the settlement of the region by peoples of disparate races and religions; the exploitation by Euro-Americans of forest, fish, and waterfowl; the transformation of farming into a high-tech industry; and the founding and deaths of towns. The economic, cultural, and racial factors that led to antagonism and accommodation between various people of different backgrounds are explored, as are the roles of education and religion in this part of the state. The book examines remarkable utopian experiments, social and moral reform movements, and innovations in transportation and food processing. It also offers fresh accounts of labor union warfare and social violence directed against Native Americans, immigrants, and African Americans and profiles three generations of political and government leaders, sometimes extraordinary and sometimes corrupt (the “one-horse thieves” of the title). A concluding chapter examines history’s roles as product, recreation, and civic bond in today’s mid-Illinois. Accessible and entertaining yet well-researched and informative, Corn Kings and One-Horse Thieves draws on a wide range of sources to explore a surprisingly diverse section of Illinois whose history is America in microcosm.

Book excerpt: Since its original release in 1939, Carl Schneider's The German Church on the American Frontier has been the premier published resource on the unique "Evangelischer Kirchenverein des Westens" (Evangelical Church Society of the West), 1840-66, which later assumed a wider denominational identity as the German Evangelical Synod of North America, the church of the Niebuhr family. Known eventually as the Evangelical Synod of North America, the group's ecumenical and irenic heritage contributed to mergers that resulted in the Evangelical and Reformed Church, 1934-1957, and thereafter in the United Church of Christ.

Download or read book Legacy of Worship written by Margaret Hryniuk and published by Coteau Books. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly-anticipated companion volume to the best-selling Legacy of Stone: Saskatchewan's Stone Buildings combines brilliant colour images of the buildings people worship in with the fascinating stories of those places and people. Legacy of Worship profiles over 60 rural churches, representing 15 spiritual denominations. The writer/photographer team that brought you the award-winning Legacy of Stone has scoured the province for sacred places that illustrate the finest of Saskatchewan’s art and design. Rural religious gathering places often display the work of folk artists and craftspeople, as well as that of professional artists and architects; they are the last repository of primitive art and such crafts as weaving, metal-smithing, needlework and furniture making. This book presents sacred places that illustrate how beauty in any form inspires and nurtures the soul. They demonstrate the universal, eternal need for art and beauty, and the importance of valuing and protecting the religious heritage so important to our identity and our proud place in Canada.
