Book Synopsis Making the Heartland Quilt by : Douglas K. Meyer
Download or read book Making the Heartland Quilt written by Douglas K. Meyer and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Making the Heartland Quilt, Douglas K. Meyer reconstructs the settlement patterns of thirty-three immigrant groups and confirms the emergence of discrete culture regions and regional way stations. Meyer argues that midcontinental Illinois symbolizes a historic test strip of the diverse population origins that unfolded during the Great Migration. Basing his research on the 1850 U.S. manuscript schedules, Meyer dissects the geographical configurations of twenty-three native and ten foreign-born adult male immigrant groups who peopled Illinois. His historical geographical approach leads to the comprehension of a new and clearer map of settlement and migration history in the state. Meyer finds that both cohesive and mixed immigrant settlements were established. Balkan-like immigrant enclaves or islands were interwoven into evolving local, regional, and national settlement networks. The midcontinental location of Illinois, its water and land linkages, and its lengthy north-south axis enhanced cultural diversity. The barrier effect of Lake Michigan contributed to the convergence and mixing of immigrants. Thus, Meyer demonstrates, Illinois epitomizes midwestern dichotomies: northern versus southern; native-born versus foreign-born; rural versus urban; and agricultural versus manufacturing.
Book Synopsis Polish Pioneers in Illinois 1818-1850 by : James D. Lodesky
Download or read book Polish Pioneers in Illinois 1818-1850 written by James D. Lodesky and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-24 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to discover the names of the first Polish settlers in Illinois, when they came to Illinois and their stories when possible. Some left complete stories about themselves while others only a very small amount. The time period starts in 1818, the year Illinois became a state and ends in 1850. I found much more information between 1818 and 1850 then I thought I would so I cut the book off at 1850. The Polish settlers are divided into five different categories. 1. Polish Political Exiles from Russia. 2. Polish emigrants from mainly German occupied Poland. 3. Polish Jews. 4. People of Polish descent, those persons with a Polish ancestor. 5. Emigrants from an undetermined county whose last names look Polish.

Download or read book Sugar Creek written by John Mack Faragher and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating story of the birth and development of a rural American community from its origins at the turn of the nineteenth century to the years that followed the Civil War. Drawing on newspapers, account books, and reminiscences, the author of the prize-winning Women and Men on the Overland Trail vividly portrays the lives of the prairie’s inhabitants—Indians, pioneers, farming men and women—and adds a compelling new chapter to American social history. "This is a book for anyone who has ridden down a country road and, hearing the wind whistle through the cornstalks, wondered about the Indians and pioneers who listened to that sound before him."—Ron Grossman, Chicago Tribune "Every chapter, almost every page, contains new ideas or throws new light on old ones, by means of a wealth of detail and clarity of though which brings the past alive again."—Hugh Brogan, The Times Literary Supplement "A notably successful example of the new work being done on the social history of rural America…. Faragher has constructed a vivid portrait of everyday life as well as an analysis of how the community developed and changed."—George M. Fredrickson, New York Review of Books "Here, succinctly set out, is the American prairie experience."—Publishers Weekly "Sugar Creek is a major new interpretation of America’s rural past."—Howard R. Lamar, Yale University Winner of the 1986 Society for the History of the Early American Republic Award John Mack Faragher is associate professor of history at Mount Holyoke College.
