Book excerpt: During the Upper Cambrian there were three mass extinctions, each of which eliminated at least half of the trilobite families living in North American shelf seas. The Nolichucky Formation preserves the record of one of these extinction events at the base of the Steptoean Stage. Sixty-six trilobite collections were made from five sections In Tennessee and Virginia. The lower Steptoean faunas are assigned to one low diversity, Aphelaspis-dominated biofacies, which can be recognized in several other parts of North America. In Tennessee, the underlying upper Marjuman strata contain two higher diversity biofacies, the Coosella-Glaphyraspis Biofacies and the Tricrepicephalus-Norwoodiid Biofacies. At least four different biofacies are present in other parts of North America: the Crepicephalus -Lonchocephalus Biofacies, the Kingstonia Biofacies, the Cedaria Biofacies, and the Uncaspis Biofacies. A new, species-based zonation for the Nolichucky Formation imcludes five zones, three of which are new. These zones are the Crepicephalus Zone, the Coosella perplexa Zone, the Aphelaspis buttsi Zone, the A. walcotti Zone and the A. tarda Zone. The Nolichucky Formation was deposited within a shallow shelf basin and consists largely of subtidal shales with stormgenerated carbonate interbeds. A relative deepening is recorded In the Nolichucky Formation near the extinction, and is indicated In some sections by the appearance of shale-rich, distal storm deposits above a carbonate-rich, more proximal storm deposit sequence. A comparable deepening-upward sequence occurs near the extinction in the Great Basin of southwestern United States and in central Texas, and this suggests a possible eustatic control. In other parts of North America, the extinction IS recorded In a variety of environmental settings that range from near-shore to slope. In shelf environments, there is a marked decrease in diversity, and a sharp reduction in biofacies differentiation. Although extinctions do take place in slope environments, there IS no net reduction in diversity because of the immigration of several new taxa.

Book excerpt: Trilobites collected during the past twenty years from the Morgan Creek, Point Peak, and San Saba members of the Wilberns Formation constitute the material basis for this paleontologic and statistical investigation. Eighty-nine species assigned to forty-five genera belong to zones of the upper Franconian and Trempealeauan Stages of the Upper Cambrian Croixan Series. New zonal names are proposed in the interest of a regionally applicable nomenclature. Although none of the zonal nomenclature is identical to that of the Cambrian Correlation Chart, the four zones recognized in central Texas are equivalent to the eight highest zones of the Chart. Stratigraphically lowest is the Franconian Taenicephalus zone, with a locally recognized Parabolinoides subzone at its base; this is equivalent to the Conaspis zone of the Correlation Chart. The Franconian Idahoia zone, with a locally recognized Idahoia lirae subzone at its base, is equivalent to the Ptychaspis subzone of the Ptychaspis-Prosaukia zone of the Correlation Chart. The sparsely fossiliferous Ellipsocephaloides zone corresponds to the Prosaukia subzone of the Ptychaspis-Prosaukia zone of the Chart. Almost two-thirds of the trilobite species occur in the Trempealeauan Saukia zone, which corresponds to the five highest zones of the Correlation Chart; local subzones, in ascending order, are the Saukiella pyrene subzone, the Saukiella junia subzone, the Saukiella serotina subzone, and the Corbinia apopsis subzone. The succession of ptychoparioid trilobite faunas contained within these zones make up the Ptychaspid biomere. The base of the biomere is at the base of the Taenicephalus zone; the top coincides with the lowest occurrence of the Ordovician trilobite fauna. Trilobite families that characterize the Ptychaspid biomere are the Ptychaspididae and the Parabolinoididae. Regression analyses of range data for all Saukia-zone taxa were used to compile a quantitative range chart. Differences between the quantitative chart and my intuitive range chart were not significant. Systematic descriptions include new species of Conaspis, Idiomesus, Euptychaspis, Keithiella, Saukiella, Prosaukia, Calvinella, and Westonaspis?; and one new variety of Orygmaspis.

The trilobites described in this study are from a 946 m thick stratigraphic section in the Lower Cambrian Illtyd Formation. Trilobites belonging to 14 genera (2 new) and 38 species (15 new) are described and a medial Bonnia-Olenellus Zone age near the base of the Illtyd Formation is documented.

Book excerpt: Previously unreported silicified trilobite faunas occur in a narrow stratigraphic interval of the Upper Cambrian (Sunwaptan) St. Charles Formation in the Bear River Range of southeastern Idaho. The faunas occur in four closely spaced rudstones and trilobite packstones indicating deposition in a shallow subtidal setting above storm wave base. At least 23 species are represented, included two undescribed genera and several undescribed species. The faunas are notable for their high trilobite abundance and pervasive silicification. Most coeval faunas have been described on the basis of small numbers of "crack-out" specimens, and the new material reveals many details of anatomy, including knowledge of most exoskeletal sclerites. The four trilobite-yielding beds contain markedly different taxon-abundance profiles, yet most species are shared between them. This suggests multiple, taphonomically-controlled samples of a similar underlying distribution, though true ecological variation cannot be discounted.

Most of these species occur in beds whose age and correlation have been a matter of controversy for more than a decade. The stratigraphic evidence afforded by the trilobites lends strong support to regional stratigraphic interpretations of the lower Champlainian beds in the Appalachian Valley, which have been worked out by G. Arthur Cooper and the writer fromdetailed study of brachiopod faunas and from physical stratigraphic studies. The trilobites, like brachiopods, are not so restricted in their facies distribution as are many groups of invertebrate fossils. Hence they are very useful in establishing contemporaneity of dissimilar facies. In this paper only the more common trilobites are described. The principal purpose of this study is to make available for biostratigraphic use a number of trilobite species, most of which have been confused or misidentified previously.
