Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have generally focused on the ‘extraordinary’ forms of protest while speaking of the lives of oppressed social groups, but the basic survival strategies of these groups are often overlooked in research. The fact that excluded groups have managed to survive has, hidden right beneath the surface, a whole range of complexities, while also demonstrating their ability to resist dominant social orders. Biswamoy Pati’s posthumous volume on the lives of the tribals and dalits/outcastes in Orissa, from c. 1800 to 1950, shows how such communities were further impoverished by both colonial government policies and the chiefs of the despotic princely states. Colonial knowledge systems, constructions of the ‘criminal tribe’, and agrarian settlements affected tribals and dalits crucially. These marginalized groups were connected with the national movement. However, their inherited problems remained unresolved even after Independence. Examining these and several other issues such as adivasi strategies of resistance, indigenous systems of health and medicine, the colonial ‘medical gaze’, conversion (to Hinduism), the fluidities of caste formation, as well as the development of colonial capitalism and urbanization, the author presents a broader view of their struggle and endurance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book Traces The British Government S Policy Towards The Aboriginal People Of Orissa, Particularly The Kandhs, And The Reaction It Caused In The People. The British Effort To Tame The Tribals By Armed Measures Was Followed By Their Effort To Civilise The Savages By Education And Widen The Scope And Scale Of Their Acculturation With Civilised People In The Neighboring Tracts. This Caused A Great Change In Tribal Life, Society And Polity. Tribal Reaction To This Externally-Induced Change Varied Between Stubborn Resistance And Grudging Acquiescence, Depending On The Pace And Extent Of The Change. The Policy Of Civilising The Savages Was Later Changed To The Policy Of Conserving Tribalism , The Government Realising The Damage Done To Tribal Tradition And Psyche. The Study Of The British Tribal Policy Is Worthwhile Because The Main Problem Faced By The Administrators Then Persists Even Today: The Problem Of How To Improve Tribal Life Without Causing, As An Inevitable Outcome, Progressive Detribalisation; How To Modernise Tribal Life Without Destroying In The Process The Distinctive Features Of Tribal Tradition And Culture. Contents Chapter 1: Tribal History Of Orissa: Perspective, Problems And Prospects; Chapter 2: Tribal History Of Orissa: A Study In Archival Source Materials; Chapter 3: The Kandhs Of Ganjam, 1836-1861: British Impact On A Tribal Society; Chapter 4: The Ganjam Agency, 1839-1900: Problems Of Tribal Administration; Chapter 5: Female Infanticide In The Hill Tracts Of Ganjam; Chapter 6: Bonded Labour In The Ganjam Agency: Dichotomy In British Tribal Policy; Chapter 7: The Kutiya Kandh Uprising, 1865-1866; Chapter 8: Bamra, Patna And Kalahandi, 1868-1882: Tribal Peasant Discontent In Western Orissa; Chapter 9: Tribal Administration In Transition: The Ganjam Agency, 1935-1947; Chapter 10: Conclusion.

Attention has been paid to the significant aspects of the identity of the primitive tribes. These are mainly statutory positions, surnames, tribe s ethnic identity, distribution of population, family and clan, language and literacy, life cycle and related customs, dress, ornaments, food habits , traditional occupations, religious beliefs, festivals, social change and mobility. These volumes will be useful for bureaucrats, planners, anthropologists, teachers and students in India and abroad. The material on these primitive tribes has deep bearing on micro-study gathered from the writings of the reputed academicians. The Bibliography with regard to these volumes is fairly comprehensive. An effort has been made not to leave any old and new publication without giving it proper recognition in these tribes.Vol. 1 : Encyclopaedia of Primitive Tribes of India, Vol. 2 : Encyclopaedia of Primitive Tribes of India

The Ho have migrated from the neighbouring districts of Bihar and are settled in Mayurbhanj district of Orissa. They continue to live amidst other local tribal populations like the Santal, Bathudi and Kharia etc. and most of the times in multi-ethnic villages, Basically the Ho are settled agriculturists and have stepped into industrial labour in recent times. The book, a monograph in the real sense, consists of social organisation, economic pursuits, political organization, religion and rituals of the Ho in Orissa. The on-going developmental programmes and their effects in one block, which was studied intensively, have been described also; and finally, the remarkable changes in various facets of their life are brought out. An endeavour in this study has been made to record the traditional Ho culture in Orissa, and the forces that change it through time.
