Book excerpt: Thermoelasticity, Second Edition reviews advances in thermoelasticity and covers topics ranging from stationary problems of thermoelasticity to variational theorems of stationary thermoelasticity; stresses due to the action of a discontinuous temperature field in an infinite elastic body; the action of heat sources in the elastic space; and thermal inclusions in an infinite disc and semi-infinite disc. Three different sets of differential equations describing the fields of strain and temperature are presented. This book is comprised of 12 chapters and begins with a discussion on basic relations and equations of thermoelasticity. Thermoelasticity is treated as a synthesis of the theory of elasticity and the theory of heat conduction. Some particular cases of thermoelasticity are then investigated, including stationary problems, the theory of thermal stresses, and classical dynamic elasticity. Dynamic effects due to the action of a non-stationary temperature field are examined, along with plane harmonic waves in an elastic space and thermal stresses in plates, shells, and viscoelastic bodies. The final chapter focuses on micropolar thermoelasticity, magnetothermoelasticity, and thermopiezoelectricity. This monograph will be of interest to physicists and mechanical engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the study of classical thermoelasticity has provided information on linear systems, only recently have results on the asymptotic behavior completed our basic understanding of the generic behavior of solutions. Through systematic work that began in the 80s, we now also understand the basic features of nonlinear systems. Yet some questions remain open, and the field has lacked a comprehensive survey that explores these past results and presents recent developments. Evolution Equations in Thermoelasticity presents a modern treatment of initial value problems and of initial boundary value problems in both linear and nonlinear thermoelasticity, in one- and multi-dimensional spatial configurations. The authors provide the first self-contained presentation of the subject that offers both introductory parts accessible to graduate students and sophisticated sections valuable to experts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North-Holland Series in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 25: Three-Dimensional Problems of the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity and Thermoelasticity focuses on the theory of three-dimensional problems, including oscillation theory, boundary value problems, and integral equations. The publication first tackles basic concepts and axiomatization and basic singular solutions. Discussions focus on fundamental solutions of thermoelasticity, fundamental solutions of the couple-stress theory, strain energy and Hooke’s law in the couple-stress theory, and basic equations in terms of stress components. The manuscript then examines uniqueness theorems and singular integrals and integral equations. The book ponders on the potential theory and boundary value problems of elastic equilibrium and steady elastic oscillations. Topics include basic theorems of the oscillation theory, existence of solutions of boundary value problems, integral equations of the boundary value problems, and boundary properties of potential-type integrals. The publication also reviews mixed dynamic problems, couple-stress elasticity, and boundary value problems for media bounded by several surfaces. The text is a dependable source of data for mathematicians and readers interested in three-dimensional problems of the mathematical theory of elasticity and thermoelasticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the basic problems of the theory of thermoelasticity for three models of continuous bodies: materials with voids, micropolar solids and nonsimple bodies. Beginning with the basic laws of thermodynamics, the theory of thermoelastic materials with voids is treated. Two subsequent chapters cover the analysis of the linear theory of micropolar thermoelastic bodies. The book concludes with a study of nonsimple thermoelastic materials, which are characterised by the inclusion of higher gradients of displacement in the basic postulates. Relevant examples and exercises which illustrate the theory are given throughout the text. The book should be of interest to mathematicians and specialists working in the fields of elasticity, thermoelasticity, civil engineering and geophysics.

Book excerpt: This volume of scientific papers is dedicated with gratitude and esteem to Ronald Rivlin and is offered as a token of appreciation by former students, col laborators, and friends. Ronald Rivlin's name is synonymous with modem developments in contin uum mechanics. His outstanding pioneering theoretical and experimental re ·search in finite elasticity is a landmark. From his work there has followed a spate of developments in which he played the leading role-the theory of fiber-rein forced materials, the developments of the theory of constitutive equations, the theory of materials with memory, the theory of the fracture of elastomers, the theory of viscoelastic fluids and solids, the development of nonlinear crystal physics, the theory of small deformations superimposed on large, and the effect of large initial strain on wave propagation. It is in Rivlin's work that universal relations were first recognized. Here also are to be found lucid explanations of physical phenomena such as the Poynting effect for elastic rods in torsion. Addi tionally, he and his co-workers predicted the presence of secondary flows for viscoelastic fluids in straight pipes of noncircular cross section under a uniform pressure head. While some others may have displayed a cavalier lack of concern for physical reality and an intoxication with mathematical idiom, Rivlin has al ways been concerned with genuine mathematical and physical content. All of his papers contain interesting and illuminating material-and may be read with profit by anyone interested in continuum mechanics.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade and particularly in recent years, the macroscopic porous media theory has made decisive progress concerning the fundamentals of the theory and the development of mathematical models in various fields of engineering and biomechanics. This progress has attracted some attention, and therefore conferences devoted almost exclusively to the macrosopic porous media theory have been organized in order to collect all findings, to present new results, and to discuss new trends. Many important contributions have also been published in national and international journals, which have brought the porous media theory, in some parts, to a close. Therefore, the time seems to be ripe to review the state of the art and to show new trends in the continuum mechanical treatment of saturated and unsaturated capillary and non-capillary porous solids. This book addresses postgraduate students and scientists working in engineering, physics, and mathematics. It provides an outline of modern theory of porous media and shows some trends in theory and in applications.
