Book excerpt: Hybrid poplar plantations have the potential to produce large amounts of biomass for the forest industry, but the young trees are sensitive to competition. This research attempted to quantify the influence of factors regulating competition in hybrid poplar plantations under four years old. The effects of competition varied with growing site, indicating an interaction with abiotic conditions. Nonetheless, perennial grasses overall appeared to be highly detrimental to tree growth in comparison to most forb species, especially for younger trees. Additionally, vegetation directly adjacent to the tree stem (within 0.5 m) was responsible for most of the competition for above-ground resources, and controlling near-stem vegetation resulted in large growth increases, but only for the fast-growing 'Okanese' clone. These results suggest that plantation managers should prioritize control of grasses while reducing above-ground biomass of all vegetation within 0.5 m of the tree stem for maximum productivity.

Book excerpt: Information about the biology, ecology, and management of quaking aspen on the mountains and plateaus of the interior western United States, and to a lesser extent, Canada, is summarized and discussed. The biology of aspen as a tree species, community relationships in the aspen ecosystem, environments, and factors affecting aspen forests are reviewed. The resources available within and from the aspen forest type, and their past and potential uses are examined. Silvicultural methods and other approaches to managing aspen for various resources and uses are presented.

Download or read book Biosafety of Forest Transgenic Trees written by Cristina Vettori and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides up-to-date information on the environmental impact of transgenic trees on genetically modified tree (GMT) communication strategy. It is useful to public/private organisations as well as to private and public research bodies and universities worldwide since it reports on the global status of GMT research and policy. A high number of genetically modified trees (GMTs) with altered or novel characteristics have been produced in the last 15 years. However, their very low public acceptance is a basic problem in their commercialization. Breeders anticipate economic and ecological benefits, like reduced product costs and less pressure on native forests, while opponents fear risks, such as unintended spread of GMTs. But what is true? To answer this question, the COST Action FP0905 focused on key aspects related to GMTs: (a) biological characterization; (b) assessment of possible environmental impacts; (c) socio-economic implications and public acceptance/concerns; (d) providing science-based information to communicate with the public.

This book was released on 1965 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Work carried out by the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station in West Virginia in the past 12 years provides useful information about the relationships between tree d.b.h. and butt-log grade. The upper logs are not included in the relationships. Being smaller and containing more knots, these upper logs are generally of lower grade than the butt logs. Thus the average grade of all material in the sawlog portion of the tree is generally lower than the average grade of the butt log. In the West Virginia data, species differences in d.b.h.-grade relationship are readily apparent. This inherent tendency for species to have different proportions of the various grades in logs of the same size is a familiar phenomenon to grade-conscious foresters who work with hardwoods. The results in this paper provide a quantitative evaluation of this tendency for six of the local species.S3.

DeLong and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Releasing conifers from the competition effects of aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is a key focus of plantation management in sub-boreal and boreal forests, often at considerable cost. However, other factors affect early plantation performance. This study investigates the relative influence of aspen competition and soil factors on the performance of planted lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.) and hybrid white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss x engelmannii Parry ex Engelm.) in north-central British Columbia. Plots were established across a gradient of natural aspen competition levels that resulted from a test of aspen control treatments at one site. Within these plots, 240 of each of the target conifer species were measured and their immediate soil and vegetative environment quantified. Regression trees and regression analysis were used to examine the importance of aspen competition relative to other factors in determining target conifer size."--Document.
