Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tree-Culture in New Zealand The continued development of the colony and the rapid extension of settlement has increased the demand for timber to such an extent that the question of forest-tree planting for future supplies has been forced upon the attention of the people, who are fully prepared to support systematic governmental action. The functions of this Department have hitherto been confined to tree raising and planting, some five million forest-trees being raised and planted permanently per annum; and it has now been decided to assist settlers by supplying information in regard to all subjects connected with the raising and planting of trees, whether for ornament, shelter, or as a source of timber-supply for the future, and with this object in view the present volume has been compiled for the use of settlers. In preparing the work the author has endeavoured to present in a concise form a general outline of the subject of forestry as applicable to the colony, without attempting to be exhaustive. The tendency on the part of European writers has been to amplify and extend the subject to the exhaustion of the merest detail, necessitating the reading of much unimportant matter to find the points most required. Technical details have been avoided as far as possible, but scientific names have been mentioned chiefly because common names are often uncertain in their application. Many works have been written on the subject, but most of these lack the simpler and special instructions which the Department's correspondence shows to be chiefly in demand, especially amongst farmers. This, however, has not been intentionally done. The pioneers made war on trees, slaughtered them, burnt them up and got rid of them the easiest and quickest Way they could devise. To a certain extent, this was excusable, as the land was needed for other purposes. Thousands now regret that they did not preserve some of the giants of the native forests. The majestic elm in this photograph is one of them. What would you give to have it in your yard? Our people now deeply deplore the mistakes that have been made, and are spending millions of dollars annually, in the hope of establishing sufficient shade and fruit trees for the requirements of man and beast. In spite of all their noble e 'orts they are meet ing defeat on every hand. The whole trouble is traceable to two oversights. It was my intention, five years ago, to point out these facts and the accompanying evils in a lec ture, by the aid of the stereopticon; but I saw that a thousand persons in that work could not reach the masses in' ten years. Then I thought I would write for some papers, butreadily discovered that but comparatively few people could be reached, and such read ing is not easily preserved. Finally, I determined to put the camera to work. Two authorities might disagree on a certain point, and the public say, They can't both be right; may be both are wrong. When, however, the camera gives you a picture, that is something from which you cannot get away. I had first intended to use fifty photographs, then made it one hundred. Again, finding there was a call for knowledge on the landscape and oral arts, I have used 175 photographs, and could use more to advantage, but cannot for the money. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ferns and Fern Allies of New Zealand: With Instructions for Their Collection and Hints on Their Cultivation; With Five Plates The demand for a compendious and handy description of the Ferns of New Zealand has led to the publication of more than one little work on the subject; but from one cause or another these books have rapidly passed out of print, so that the collector - desirous of identifying the plants he obtains - is obliged to consult Hooker's "Handbook of the New Zealand Flora," a work which is too general in its outline for his purposes, and which is already somewhat out of date. To satisfy this demand, the author has been led to prepare this small manual, in the hope that it will meet the requirements of the case and will prove to be longer-lived and of more lasting value than its predecessors. The usual demand in such a work is that it shall be written in a "popular" style and in "popular" language - in other words, that all technical terms shall be avoided in descriptions. Books of this class are in the majority of cases unsatisfactory, usually lacking that scientific accuracy which is the first requirement of such works, but chiefly being defective in conciseness of description and exactness of phraseology. They fail to satisfy those who want scientific descriptions, and are not sufficiently explicit for those who have little knowledge of the subjects treated of. A large technical vocabulary has grown up round the literature of ferns, which it is impossible to ignore altogether. No one can lay claim to a knowledge of these plants without knowing something also of this terminology; for it is impossible to examine ferns without finding characters and points of structure which our ordinary vocabulary fails to describe aptly. There is hardly any pursuit or study which has not a terminology of its own, and the student of ferns will find that there is such a terminology in his branch, and that it has to be mastered before he can make satisfactory progress in the identification of species.
