Systematic reviews exist to help inform clinical practice and to identify future implications for research. Currently in the area of aphasia therapy outcomes research, systematic reviews are narrow in focus, and typically examine one method or technique of aphasia therapy. This systematic review identified several key aspects of aphasia therapy outcomes research and thereby broadened the traditionally narrow scope of prior systematic reviews. This review encompassed 65 current research studies published from 2010 to 2016. An inductive approach to searching for articles and excluding irrelevant research ultimately identified articles that reported 11 methods of aphasia therapy. The studies that used these 11 methods of therapy were then subjected to further review, during which 12 key study properties of were identified in order to show the characteristics of the aphasia therapy outcomes research and the clinical relevance of the outcomes. The strength of the key properties of each study can inform which studies would contribute relevant information for evidence based clinical practice in speech-language pathology.To summarize the results of the analyses of the key study properties, the majority of the studies (1) included between one and five participants; (2) included participants with remote onset of aphasia (many months or many years prior); (3) were single case study research designs (and very few were randomized control trials); (4) used statistics to analyze research findings; (5) used tasks similar to those used in therapy to measure outcomes (and very few used standardized assessments to measure outcomes); (6) reported that therapy effected some degree of positive post-treatment outcomes; (7) reported some degree of positive generalization outcomes; (8); and did not use therapy materials that were personally relevant to the therapy participants. From these findings it can be concluded that there is a need for additional research on persons with recent onset of aphasia and for explorations of clinical practice considerations that were not frequently identified, such as the efficacy of aphasia therapy materials that have personal relevance for persons in treatment.
