Book excerpt: In 1977 youth revolts spectacular in their intensity, creativity and violence would send shockwaves throughout Italian society. These rebellions, belonging to the autonomia movement, were characterised by a mass refusal of wage-labour and powered by novel experiments in communication, in particular the printed word. Hundreds of revolutionary newspapers known as ‘movement sheets’ would circulate Italy during those years, acting as little machines to produce political subjectivity. This book contains the recollections of the autonomist militant, philosopher and media theorist Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi on autonomia and the tumultuous events of ’77, told through the pages of A/traverso, the Bolognese movement sheet he produced with others between 1975 - 1981. In texts translated into English for the first time, presented alongside extensive archival material and stunning photographs, this book explores the subversion, exuberance and joy of the movement of ’77, while raising important questions about the role of creative collectivity and experimental communication for militants today. Texts by Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi, Ryan Duffy, Dante Philp, Nick Thoburn, Jamila Squire & Seth Wheeler. Foreword by Bobby Gillespie, Primal Scream. Translated by Ivana Bevilacqua, Matthew Lee and Lukasz Risso. Cover design & layout by Tom Greenwood. Internal design by Tom Greenwood, Jamila Squire & Seth Wheeler. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of the Berlin Wall marked the end of the Cold War but also the rise of a melancholic vision of history as a series of losses. For the political left, the cause lost was communism, and this trauma determined how leftists wrote the next chapter in their political struggle and how they have thought about their past since. Throughout the twentieth century, argues Left-Wing Melancholia, from classical Marxism to psychoanalysis to the advent of critical theory, a culture of defeat and its emotional overlay of melancholy have characterized the leftist understanding of the political in history and in theoretical critique. Drawing on a vast and diverse archive in theory, testimony, and image and on such thinkers as Karl Marx, Walter Benjamin, Theodor W. Adorno, and others, the intellectual historian Enzo Traverso explores the varying nature of left melancholy as it has manifested in a feeling of guilt for not sufficiently challenging authority, in a fear of surrendering in disarray and resignation, in mourning the human costs of the past, and in a sense of failure for not realizing utopian aspirations. Yet hidden within this melancholic tradition are the resources for a renewed challenge to prevailing regimes of historicity, a passion that has the power to reignite the dialectic of revolutionary thought.

Book excerpt: "Brilliant and beautiful. Now this book exists, it’s hard to know how we did without it." –China Miéville, author of October A cultural and intellectual balance-sheet of the twentieth century's age of revolutions This book reinterprets the history of nineteenth and twentieth-century revolutions by composing a constellation of "dialectical images": Marx's "locomotives of history," Alexandra Kollontai's sexually liberated bodies, Lenin's mummified body, Auguste Blanqui's barricades and red flags, the Paris Commune's demolition of the Vendome Column, among several others. It connects theories with the existential trajectories of the thinkers who elaborated them, by sketching the diverse profiles of revolutionary intellectuals--from Marx and Bakunin to Luxemburg and the Bolsheviks, from Mao and Ho Chi Minh to José Carlos Mariátegui, C.L.R. James, and other rebellious spirits from the South--as outcasts and pariahs. And finally, it analyzes the entanglement between revolution and communism that so deeply shaped the history of the twentieth century. This book thus merges ideas and representations by devoting an equal importance to theoretical and iconographic sources, offering for our troubled present a new intellectual history of the revolutionary past.

Book excerpt: Europe’s second Thirty Years’ War—an epoch of blood and ashes Fire and Blood looks at the European crisis of the two world wars as a single historical sequence: the age of the European Civil War (1914–1945). Its overture was played out in the trenches of the Great War; its coda on a ruined continent. It opened with conventional declarations of war and finished with “unconditional surrender.” Proclamations of national unity led to eventual devastation, with entire countries torn to pieces. During these three decades of deepening conflicts, a classical interstate conflict morphed into a global civil war, abandoning rules of engagement and fought by irreducible enemies rather than legitimate adversaries, each seeking the annihilation of its opponents. It was a time of both unchained passions and industrial, rationalized massacre. Utilizing multiple sources, Enzo Traverso depicts the dialectic of this era of wars, revolutions and genocides. Rejecting commonplace notions of “totalitarian evil,” he rediscovers the feelings and reinterprets the ideas of an age of intellectual and political commitment when Europe shaped world history with its own collapse.

Book excerpt: In the half-century since the appearance of Hannah Arendt's seminal work The Origins of Totalitarianism, innumerable historians have detailed the history of the Nazi years. Now, in a brilliant synthesis of this work, Enzo Traverso situates the extermination camps as the final, terrible moment in European modernity's industrialization of killing and dehumanization of death. Traverso upends the conventional presentation of the Holocaust as an inexplicable anomaly, navigating an excess of antecedents both technical and cultural. Deftly tracing a complex lineage - the guillotine and machine gun, the prison and assembly line, as well as widespread ideologies of racial supremacy and colonial expansion - Traverso reveals that the ideas that coalesced at Auschwitz came from Europe's mainstream and not its margins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is fascism in the twenty first century? What does Fascism mean at the beginning of the twenty-first century? When we pronounce this word, our memory goes back to the years between the two world wars and envisions a dark landscape of violence, dictatorships, and genocide. These images spontaneously surface in the face of the rise of radical right, racism, xenophobia, islamophobia and terrorism, the last of which is often depicted as a form of "Islamic fascism." Beyond some superficial analogies, however, all these contemporary tendencies reveal many differences from historical fascism, probably greater than their affinities. Paradoxically, the fear of terrorism nourishes the populist and racist rights, with Marine Le Pen in France or Donald Trump in the US claiming to be the most effective ramparts against "Jihadist fascism". But since fascism was a product of imperialism, can we define as fascist a terrorist movement whose main target is Western domination? Disentangling these contradictory threads, Enzo Traverso's historical gaze helps to decipher the enigmas of the present. He suggests the concept of post-fascism--a hybrid phenomenon, neither the reproduction of old fascism nor something completely different--to define a set of heterogeneous and transitional movements, suspended between an accomplished past still haunting our memories and an unknown future.

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, Fourth Edition, is a comprehensive guide that provides all the information you need to successfully litigate a sexual harassment claim. Sexual Harassment in the Workplace guides you through the relevant administrative and legal proceedings, from client interviews to attorney's fees. It discusses state and federal remedies available to maximize recovery, including: The development and elements of the claim Sample pleadings Discovery documents Reviews of actual cases Special attention is given to important topics such as: Suits by alleged harassers Insurance indemnification Class actions And many others Sexual Harassment in the Workplace brings you up to date on the latest case law developments, including the following: A new checklist of items to cover when representing an employer The U.S. Supreme Court confirmed that retaliation is actionable under Title IX where a girls' high school basketball coach claimed that he suffered retaliation for complaining about sexual discrimination in the athletic program of the school, even though he himself was not the direct victim. Jackson v. Birmingham Board of Education, 544 U.S. 167 (2005) In order to increase opportunities for mediation, the EEOC expanded the charges eligible for mediation and now mediation is available at the conciliation stage, after a finding of discrimination has been issued, in appropriate cases The U.S. Supreme Court has held that under the Federal Arbitration Act, where parties to an arbitration agreement include a provision that delegates to the arbitrator the threshold question of enforceability of the arbitration agreement, if a party specifically challenges the enforceability of the entire agreement, the arbitrator would consider the challenge. If, however, the party only challenges the enforceability of the arbitration provision, the challenge must be heard by a court. Rent-A-Center, West Inc. v. Jackson, 130 S. Ct. 2772 (2010) The lack of timeliness in filing a discrimination action is an affirmative defense and the burden of proof is on the employer. Salas v. Wisconsin Department of Corrections, 493 F.3d 913, 922 (7th Cir 2007) A federal employee's premature filing of a sexual harassment employment discrimination and retaliation complaint did not constitute a failure to exhaust administrative remedies so as to deprive the district court of subject-matter jurisdiction. Brown v. Snow, 440 F.3d 1259 (11th Cir. 2006) A majority of states impose a shorter period for filing with their agencies, though, so the filing deadline is not always extended when a state has its own agency The andquot;single filing ruleandquot; - under which a party who has not filed an EEOC charge or received a right-to-sue notice may andquot;piggybackandquot; his or her judicial action on the claim of a party who has satisfied those prerequisites - has been described as a andquot;carefully limited exceptionandquot; to Title VII's procedural requirements. Price v. Choctaw Glove and Safety Co., 459 F.3d 595 (5th Cir. 2006) Provided that an act contributing to the claim occurs within the filing period, the court may consider the entire period of the hostile environment for purposes of determining liability. Jordan v. City of Cleveland, 464 F.3d 584 (6th Cir. 2006) The Supreme Court has held that a plaintiff's timely filing of an EEOC intake questionnaire, which was followed by an affidavit stating andquot; Please force Federal Express to end their age discrimination . . .andquot; constituted a charge, cautioning, however, that its permissiv

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memorials are proliferating throughout the globe. States recognize the political value of memorials: memorials can convey national unity, a sense of overcoming violent legacies, a commitment to political stability or the strengthening of democracy. Memorials represent fitful negotiations between states and societies symbolically to right wrongs, to recognize loss, to assert distinct historical narratives that are not dominant. This book explores relationships among art, representation and politics through memorials to violent pasts in Spain and Latin America. Drawing from curators, art historians, psychologists, political theorists, holocaust studies scholars, as well as the voices of artists, activists, and families of murdered and disappeared loved ones, Politics and the Art of Commemoration uses memorials as conceptual lenses into deep politics of conflict and as suggestive arenas for imagining democratic praxis. Tracing deep histories of political struggle and suggesting that today’s commemorative practices are innovating powerful forms of collective political action, this work will be of great interest to students and scholars of international relations, Latin American studies and memory studies.
