Sie fliehen vor politischer oder gesellschaftlicher Unterdrückung, Gewalt, Mißhandlungen, Folter, Umwelt- und Naturkatastrophen. Sie suchen Schutz und sichere Lebensbedingungen im Exil für sich und ihre Familie. Doch sie erfahren, daß das in Deutschland nur unter ganz speziellen Voraussetzungen zu haben ist. Wird ihnen kein Bleiberecht zuerkannt, müssen sie dorthin zurück, wo sie hergekommen sind. Das Asylverfahren schützt nicht unbedingt vor einer Rückkehr. Alle diese Bedingungen wirken für Schutzsuchende mehr oder weniger stark wie eine existentielle Bedrohung. Sie wirken traumatisierend und beeinträchtigen das Leben der Betroffenen. Daran anschließend stellt die vorliegende Arbeit einen Versuch dar, sich der sehr komplexen Thematik von Traumatisierungen im Fluchtkontext anzunähern. Betrachtet werden einerseits häufige Ursachen und Hintergründe traumatischer Erfahrungen bei Flüchtlingen, deren physische, psychische und soziale Auswirkungen für das Individuum sowie die Berücksichtigung und Anerkennung dieser Aspekte im Asylverfahren und Exilland. Dem gegenüber wurde der Handlungsspielraum der Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Intervention von Sozialarbeit im Kontakt mit traumatisierten Flüchtlingen untersucht. Kapitel I greift zunächst einige Gesichtspunkte der Dimension von Fluchtbewegungen weltweit sowie in Bezug auf Europa und Deutschland im spezielleren auf. Der Blickwinkel auf Fluchthintergründe bzw. Fluchtbedingungen soll einen Eindruck verschaffen über Lebenslagen und Situationen im Herkunftsland bzw. während der Flucht, denen Flüchtlinge ausgesetzt waren und die sich später in ihrer gesundheitlichen Verfassung widerspiegeln. Das zweite Kapitel betrachtet verschiedene begriffliche Unterscheidungen von Trauma und psychischer Traumatisierung. Im folgenden (Kapitel III) werden wesentliche gesundheitsbeeinträchtigende Folgeerscheinungen aufgeführt, die bei betroffenen Flüchtlingen in der Praxis diagnostiziert werden. Der Schwerpunkt liegt hier in der Betrachtung der psychischen Auswirkungen für den Einzelnen. Kapitel IV lenkt den Blick auf den Umgang mit traumatisierten Flüchtlingen im Exilland. Dargestellt wird vor allem, inwiefern Traumatisierungen im deutschen Asylverfahren - d.h. während Anhörungssituationen und in der Rechtsprechung Anerkennung finden. Abschließend wird die Situation von Sozialarbeit mit traumatisierten Flüchtlingen diskutiert.
