Book excerpt: The day the blizzard started, no one knew that it was going to keep snowing for a week. That for those in its path, it would become not just a matter of keeping warm, but of staying alive. . . .Scotty and his friends Pete and Jason are among the last seven kids at their high school waiting to get picked up that day, and they soon realize that no one is coming for them. Still, it doesn't seem so bad to spend the night at school, especially when distractingly hot Krista and Julie are sleeping just down the hall. But then the power goes out, then the heat. The pipes freeze, and the roof shudders. As the days add up, the snow piles higher, and the empty halls grow colder and darker, the mounting pressure forces a devastating decision. . . .Michael Northrop is the New York Times bestselling author of TombQuest, an epic book and game adventure series featuring the magic of ancient Egypt. He is also the author of Trapped, an Indie Next List Selection, and Plunked, a New York Public Library best book of the year and an NPR Backseat Book Club selection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our students aren’t learning, we’re falling behind other countries, and many of our college graduates are even functionally illiterate. We offer our kids a weak and poorly thought out curriculum; too many teachers do not make good use of classroom time and follow lesson plans that are superficial and repetitive; almost all state governments define “proficiency” at low levels of competency; and because kids with very uneven skills populate a classroom, teachers spend considerable time on review before introducing new material. This dismal picture is tempered by the fact that the hard work and dedication of countless teachers and administrators means that many students get an excellent education. But it doesn’t temper it much. As a group, even our top students are not as strong as are those in a large majority of other rich countries. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Katherine Baird, an economist, starts by clearly spelling out how our educational system is trapped in mediocrity. Yet, she doesn’t just expose where we are. She identifies the steps to get out of the trap. We need to (1) dramatically reform our education’s governance structure, (2) establish high expectations for all students, (3) provide adequate support to meet those expectations, and (4) introduce strong incentives for students to work hard in school so they do their part in meeting higher standards. Clearly, it isn’t as simple as it sounds, but Baird carefully examines each factor that has led to the current state in education and then spells out how a combination of policies will weaken the forces that keep our schools mediocre and instead make them ones worth copying

Book excerpt: “Trust me, once you get caught in the mob’s web, you never truly get out again.” One minute, Phoebe Cavanaugh is minding her own business, trying to recover from a weeknight hangover; the next, she’s witnessing a child kidnapping in progress. What’s worse; the child’s mother doesn’t want her to involve the cops. Why not? Because her ex-husband, Gino, is a mafia boss. Okay, totally the opposite of Phoebe’s world. Heck some people are now calling her “the Good Samaritan” thanks to media coverage of the kidnapping. Not that this knowledge is going to stop her from trying to find the kid… Antonio Sarvilli may be an anti-hero, but he’s not that bad. He doesn’t kill people; he’s the behind-the-scenes money man for his mob boss brother’s dangerous empire. Which is why it’s so out of character for Gino to assign him to find out what this Good Samaritan knows about his daughter’s kidnapping. But Antonio does it, because no one says no to Gino Sarvilli. He gets close to Phoebe. He starts to like her. Maybe even…no, he needs to back off. The last thing he wants to do is pull Phoebe into his world. Because once you’re in, you never get out again. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally someone inside public education is willing and able to share what makes public education one of the most wasteful and harmful and yet one of the most noble efforts in the history of mankind. This book pulls the curtain back for an unedited and uncensored view of public education, including components of public education heretofore unheard of by the general public. The author shares a personal and professional journey into corners of public education that will both disturb and delight readers. The author takes the reader into the world of felonious students and staff members, and how their presence in school poses real dangers for all students. He chronicles how some public school teachers and administrators save souls and how others are allowed to be cruel to children. Along with these honest descriptions of public education, the author also shares his personal journey through public education with a humorous view alternating with heart rendering descriptions of students trying to retain their dignity while struggling to survive in public schools. Recent books such as Waiting for Superman and The Death and Life of the Great American School System fail to capture and reveal the heart and soul of public education in America. The Private Side of Public Education will forever change the reader’s perception of public education.

Clara Shin lives for pranks and disruption. When she takes one joke too far, her dad sentences her to a summer working on his food truck, the KoBra, alongside her uptight classmate Rose Carver. Not the carefree summer Clara had imagined. But maybe Rose isn't so bad. Maybe the boy named Hamlet (yes, Hamlet) crushing on her is pretty cute. Maybe Clara actually feels invested in her dad’s business. What if taking this summer seriously means that Clara has to leave her old self behind? With Maurene Goo's signature warmth and humor, The Way You Make Me Feel is a relatable story of falling in love and finding yourself in the places you’d never thought to look.
