Book excerpt: Donation and Transplant of human organs, tissues and cells is a complex process that requires the involvement of several specialised healthcare professionals and efficient organisational management to succeed. This manual is intended to be a comprehensive handbook to address the problems and challenges that the organ procurement process encounters, from pragmatic solutions to the new trends in this field. It is based on the Transplant Procurement Management (TPM) training methodology that brings together highly qualified international experts to ensure best practice exchange across the global community. It embodies the state-of-the-art donation - transplant process. It focuses on the major aspects, duties and professional responsibilities of the TPM: detection, identification and selection of donors, brain death diagnosis, donor management, organ viability, family approach for organ donation, donation after cardiac death, organ recovery organization & preservation techniques, organ sharing and allocation criteria, living donation, tissue donation, ethics and legislation, as well as the establishment and development of organ donation systems. The editors would like to acknowledge the support we have received from remarkable national and international authors with well-known and long-standing expertise in every specific area of the donation-transplant field, many of them as part of the permanent TPM faculty. We hope that this manual will become an optimal resource for all the professionals devoted to the human organs, tissues and cells procurement, and help them to strengthen their competences and motivation to save human lives and / or improve their quality.

Book Synopsis Manual of Vascular Access, Organ Donation, and Transplantation by : Richard L. Simmons
Download or read book Manual of Vascular Access, Organ Donation, and Transplantation written by Richard L. Simmons and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-10-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of common and uncommon surgical and ancillary techniques that we have found useful in the multiorgan transplantation pro gram at the University of Minnesota. Descriptions of these techniques are not available at a single source elsewhere. Use the book as a teaching aid, a source of workable techniques, and as a reference for individuals with relatively little experience in a particular area of transplantation. Because of the varying levels of expertise of our readers, vascular access is described in exquisite detail, as it is aimed at an audience of individuals who want to learn the fine points about how to prolong the function of shunts. The chapter on organ preservation is aimed at the surgeon or beginning technician who must learn how to do it from scratch--even the catalogue numbers of the necessary equipment are included. In contrast the chapters on heart, liver, and pancreas transplantation, while omitting fine points of suture technique, concentrate on the essential principles and safeguards. Individuals contemplating such transplants are presumably already schooled in the fine points of surgical technique. The chapters on cadaver organ donation are perhaps the most innovative. They represent our attempt to reorganize organ donation in a way that will provide the greatest usefulness of each donor as a source for multiple organs for transplantation. We hope that the book will become available to centers that, while not performing liver, pancreas, or heart transplants, wish to serve as donation centers.

A number of books has been written on transplantation for clinicians which unfortunately give very little information for transplant coordinators who are the main pillars playing a key role acting as liason among other team members for a successful transplant programme. This book aims to meet all the requirements, providing a comprehensive overview with practical guidance, covering specifics of each aspect of transplant program administration including evaluation, communication and collaboration with patient, family and clinical staff, ethical issues, and government rules and regulations. The content is based on the experience of successful transplant programs conducted by the contributors who are experts in their respective fields. Immense care has been taken to use simple and lucid language to ensure that the chapters are easily read and imbibed not just by the trained coordinators but also the paramedical staff. There are various annexures providing valuable information which will help the transplant coordinators in their day-to-day work. The book will serve as a valuable resource to the transplant coordinators. Besides, it will also be of considerable help to the transplant administrators and related professionals such as health policy researchers and the hospital management staff who are assigned the task of starting a transplant program.

Book Synopsis Opportunities for Organ Donor Intervention Research by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Opportunities for Organ Donor Intervention Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The organ donation and transplantation system strives to honor the gift of donated organs by fully using those organs to save and improve the quality of the lives of their recipients. However, there are not enough donated organs to meet the demand and some donated organs may not be recovered, some recovered organs may not be transplanted, and some transplanted organs may not function adequately. Organ donor intervention research can test and assess interventions (e.g., medications, devices, and donor management protocols) to maintain or improve organ quality prior to, during, and following transplantation. The intervention is administered either while the organ is still in the deceased donor or after it is recovered from the donor but before it is transplanted into a recipient. Organ donor intervention research presents new challenges to the organ donation and transplantation community because of ethical questions about who should be considered a human subject in a research study, whose permission and oversight are needed, and how to ensure that such research does not threaten the equitable distribution of a scarce and valuable resource. Opportunities for Organ Donor Intervention Research focuses on the ethical, legal, regulatory, policy, and organizational issues relevant to the conduct of research in the United States involving deceased organ donors. This report provides recommendations for how to conduct organ donor intervention research in a manner that maintains high ethical standards, that ensures dignity and respect for deceased organ donors and their families, that provides transparency and information for transplant candidates who might receive a research organ, and that supports and sustains the public's trust in the process of organ donation and transplantation.
