Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “TRANSPLANT is not just a book about heart disease (any more than First, You Cry is just a book about breast cancer). It’s about people – and they get to you. It’s a touching, sweet, tough book – and it rings true.” -BETTY ROLLIN “I got utterly hooked – it’s Edith and Archie Bunker catapulted to greatness by an existential crisis they could never have dreamed of. A testament to the miracle of people growing, almost in spite of themselves. Very gripping and moving.” – EDA LeSHAN “TRANSPLANT is a very moving account of how a family responded to the terrible stresses of severe heart disease. If the Hurleys are the ordinary people they would seem to be, there is hope for the human race. Transplant shows that humor, courage, wisdom, and tolerance are alive and well. It’s a fine book.” – WILLIAM A. NOLEN, M.D. Philip Dossick is one of America’s finest writers. - DAVID SUSSKIND

Book Synopsis Vincent Van Gogh: Madness and Magic by : Philip Dossick
Download or read book Vincent Van Gogh: Madness and Magic written by Philip Dossick and published by Editions Artisan Devereaux. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vincent Van Gogh needs no introduction. An iconoclast to the last, an artist who challenged tradition, overturned outmoded customs, a man who relished being a bomb-thrower and expert provocateur, he was without question one of the greatest artists of all time. Madness And Magic by American author Philip Dossick contains thirty of Van Gogh’s wittiest, most profound works, harvested from a lifetime of his most radically creative years. The author’s choices range from the renowned and expected, to the obscure and disturbing. The reader may find the lean precision of Madness And Magic an astute marriage of art and poetry. Each of the thirty paintings is paired with a short original poem, a format that breathes new life into the stale, over-populated coffee-table book universe of seldom opened volumes. Turn a page. Van Gogh’s trees are not simply trees. They are strange living creatures bursting with color and touched by solar flare. The author wonders, why did Van Gogh visualize them this way? What was it about them that enraptured him so? Why did this nature lover become mystically attuned to these leafy petaled creatures? Attuned to libidinous young women? Attuned to scrofulous individuals cursed by old age and infirmity? Human nature is far too complex, and the personality of an artistic genius too enigmatic for a biographer to supply easy explanations. Instead, in Madness And Magic, Dossick has chosen to chart the course Van Gogh’s genius took, and speculate, through selection and poetry, why some of the upheavals and catastrophes in his life might have occurred along the lines they did.

Download or read book Therapeutic Immunosuppression written by Angus W. Thomson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work has broad applications in clinical medicine, ranging from prevention and treatment of organ and bone marrow transplant rejection, management of various autoimmune disorders (for example, rheumatoid arthritis), skin disease and asthma. Whereas traditionally only a small repertoire of immunosuppressive agents was available for clinical use, recent discoveries have significantly increased the number of approved agents, resulting in numerous trials to further evaluate their potential. Download or read book The Organ Thieves written by Chip Jones and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks meets Get Out in this “startling…powerful” (Kirkus Reviews) investigation of racial inequality at the core of the heart transplant race. In 1968, Bruce Tucker, a black man, went into Virginia’s top research hospital with a head injury, only to have his heart taken out of his body and put into the chest of a white businessman. Now, in The Organ Thieves, Pulitzer Prize–nominated journalist Chip Jones exposes the horrifying inequality surrounding Tucker’s death and how he was used as a human guinea pig without his family’s permission or knowledge. The circumstances surrounding his death reflect the long legacy of mistreating African Americans that began more than a century before with cadaver harvesting and worse. It culminated in efforts to win the heart transplant race in the late 1960s. Featuring years of research and fresh reporting, along with a foreword from social justice activist Ben Jealous, “this powerful book weaves together a medical mystery, a legal drama, and a sweeping history, its characters confronting unprecedented issues of life and death under the shadows of centuries of racial injustice” (Edward L. Ayers, author of The Promise of the New South).

Download or read book Nephrology Forum written by J.J. Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago, as the editor of Kidney International, I was ap proached by Drs. Cohen, Kassirer, and Harrington who suggested that a new feature should be included in each monthly issue of the journal. They suggested that it should employ a case discussion format such as that used frequently at specialty rounds in teaching hospitals, and that the discussion should place a special emphasis on the relationship between basic science and important problems in clinical nephrology. The summary of an actual patient history would first be presented to exemplify a particular clinical problem, a seasoned person of proven expertise would be invited to deliver a well-documented analysis of the relevant issues, and perhaps most ambitiously of all, a critical audience would be assembled to challenge the principal discussant in an open ended, question-and-answer period. The entire affair would be recorded at the time of the live conference and transcribed subse quently in preparation for publication as a "Nephrology Forum. " I must confess that I was somewhat hesitant at first to endorse their proposal because, at the time, Kidney International had just begun to establish a solid reputation for the publication of high quality, peer reviewed manuscripts dealing with the clinical and laboratory research interests of the international nephrological community.
Book Synopsis Every Second Counts by : Donald McRae
Download or read book Every Second Counts written by Donald McRae and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic race to transplant the first human heart spanned two years, three continents and five cities against a backdrop of searing tension, scientific brilliance, ethical controversy, racial strife and emotional turmoil. It culminated in a terrifying moment in the early hours of 3 December 1967 when, in a cramped operating theatre in a Cape Town hospital, Professor Chris Barnard stared into an empty cavity from which he had just removed a heart. He knew that he had only minutes left to make history and save the life of a 55-year-old man by filling the gaping hole in his chest with a heart which had just been beating inside a 25-year-old woman. Every Second Countsis the story of this gripping race to conquer the greatest of medical challenges. It also reveals the truth about the man at the centre of it all, whose turbulent life story was just as gripping. The kind of true story that would be dismissed as far-fetched if presented as fiction, it combines an utterly compelling portrait of cutting-edge science with raw human drama, and shows how the course of medicine itself was changed for ever.
