Book excerpt: This document consists of candu zr-2.5nb pressure tube inspection and operating data primarily for ontario hydro reactors. the data presented here represent the current contents of the in-reactor deformation database developed and maintained at ohrd/1/. it is intended for use in the understanding of the deformation behaviour of fuel channels in power reactors and in the derivation and fine-tuning of material creep and growth constants for the new deformation equations. in compiling and presenting the deformation and operating data of fuel channels the databse provides a statistical sample of the actual operating behaviour of components in candu power reactors. this sample may be used to detect any abnormal or unexpected effects and to provide a means of comparison between different power reactos. with the future addition of 600 mw and experimental reactor data, this information will play a key role in the development of a broader understanding of fuel channel behaviour in the ongoing process of extending the operating lives of candu reactors. this document represents the first issue of the information in the database in a 3-ring binder format. it is felt that this format will avoid the need to re-issue the entire document when new information becomes available. it will be the responsibility of ohrd to provide updates on a regular basis (most likely annually). the information is divided into three sections: the first section contains diametral expansion inspection data for individual fuel channels, the second contains the sag inspection data, and the third contains the reactor operating data. within each section are three subsections: a legend describing the tables, information on the source and processing of the data in the tables, and the tables of the data.

This report describes the design of specialized high-speed 16-coil eddy-current array probes. Both pancake and reflection coils are considered. Test results from inspections using the probes in working steam generators are given. Computer programs developed for probe calculations are also supplied.

Book excerpt: The aging of the steam generators at the nation`s nuclear power plants has led to the appearance of new forms of degradation in steam generator tubes and an increase in the frequency of forced outages due to major tube leak events. The eddy-current techniques currently being used for the inspection of steam generator tubing are no longer adequate to ensure that flaws will be detected before they lead to a shutdown of the plant. To meet the need for a fast and reliable method of inspection, ORNL has designed a 16-coil eddy-current array probe which combines an inspection speed similar to that of the bobbin coil with a sensitivity to cracks of any orientation similar to the rotating pancake coil. In addition, neural network and least square methods have been developed for the automatic analysis of the data acquired with the new probes. The probes and analysis software have been tested at two working steam generators where we have found an increase in the signal-to-noise ratio of a factor of five an increase in the inspection speed of a factor of 75 over the rotating pancake coil which maintaining similar detection and characterization capabilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been engaged in the research and development of eddy-current tests for a wide range of different problems. Recent advances have been made on our multiple-property techniques. This technique generates a set of coefficients that correlate the readings from an eddy-current instrument to the properties of the test that produce the readings. While this technique will work with reflection probes, pancake probes, or bobbin probes, we have concentrated on the latter since this type of test is the most widely used in the commercial inspection of steam generators. The test properties varied include tube supports, tube sheets, copper deposits, magnetite deposits, denting, wastage, pitting, cracking and IGA. While our multiple-property technique has given good results for several years, recent advances in personal computers have considerably improved the results. Fits have been run for the differential bobbin probe that have included over 95,000 different sets of property values and their corresponding readings. Multiple-property fits of these readings have given defect size fits with root-mean-square errors under 5% of the wall thickness for ASME Section XI standards. Although the actual measurement of the defect depths is not that good (without corrections), the signal-to-noise ratio is very good, even at copper and magnetite interfaces. Different types of function fits have been tested for the various types of probes and defects, and optimum functions have been determined for each. 3 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: A rapid, accurate, and easy-to-use inspection method for steam generator tubes is clearly needed and not entirely provided by our present eddy-current tests. The signals from eddy-current tests are affected by changes in tube wall thickness, the location and size of defects, the electrical conductivity, the magnetic permeability, and the tube-to-tube support spacing and denting (which changes the probe to tube spacing). Simultaneous variations in these test properties produce signals that are ambiguous in present commercial eddy-current instruments. However, this type of multiple property eddy-current testing can be done using pulsed techniques or multiple frequencies. A systematic, automated process has been developed at ORNL to allow rapid development of accurate multiple property eddy-current tests.
