Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transmigration, Vol. 1 of 3 Riters of what have been called Utopian Ro mances need not accuse their rivals of plagiary, since they are all treading in the track of giants like Aristophanes and Swift. But it may be well to state that I had not read The Coming Race until these volumes were passing through the press, and that I have never seen Erewhon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Re-Incarnation, or Life Returns Unceasingly To put the matter in simple words, the writer believes that life returns again and again on the earth. Not only human life but all life. This theory, under the name transmigration, was taught by Buddhism in a crude form and is believed in by at least one-third of the population of the earth, who are more or less under the influence of Buddhist teaching. Like all great fundamental ideas, there are perhaps few parts of the earth where the idea has not been present in some dim fashion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Transmigration of Souls, written by a professor of theology at the University of Basle named Alfred Bertholet, is an examination of the concept of transmigration, also known as reincarnation. First written in German, this work was translated into English by Reverend H.J. Chaytor and has now been republished by Forgotten Books. This is a brief work that argues for the existence of transmigration by tracing the concept across different religions and through various societies and cultures. The author begins the book by laying out three preliminary suppositions that form the foundation for the book's discussions: the existence of a soul separate from the body, the belief that non-humans possess souls, and the acceptance that souls can be transferred between organisms. The book begins with a discussion of the souls of various living beings: plants, animals, and humans. The latter part of Bertholet's work traces the concept of reincarnation through various religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism. Space is also devoted to a discussion of metempsychosis in ancient Greece and amongst the Celts. While the author covers a good deal of ground in The Transmigration of Souls, very little of the text is written in a persuasive manner. The concept is presented more as a matter of fact, which may be difficult to accept for the skeptical reader. On the other hand for those who already believe in reincarnation, it may be a reaffirming read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great student of the Science of Mind, Richard Ingalese frequently lectured on New Thought and topics of mental therapeutics. The History and Power of Mind is a collection of many of his lectures and articles, first published in 1902, with Ingalese's own annotations and expansions. Difficult subjects to wrangle, from self-control to hypnotism to self-healing, were not a problem for the articulate and charismatic Ingalese, who brings insight and intelligence to esoteric ideas and puts them in a practical and applicable context that demystifies mental and psychic phenomena for the intellectual reader curious about the mind, how it works, and what it can do. American lawyer RICHARD INGALESE (b. 1854) was a self-taught alchemist and proponent of New Thought. He claimed to have confected the true Philosopher's Stone, which confers immortality and turns common metals into gold, and disappeared, along with his wife, a psychic and healer, sometime in the early 20th century. Before their disappearance, Ingalese authored several articles and books, including Fragments of Truth (1921), Astrology and Health (1927), and Cosmogony and Evolution (1907).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'The World as Will and Idea' by Arthur Schopenhauer, the author presents his philosophical masterpiece in three volumes, exploring the nature of the world as perceived through the lens of individual will and idea. Schopenhauer's literary style is characterized by its depth and clarity, making complex philosophical concepts accessible to a wide range of readers. Drawing on ideas from Western and Eastern philosophies, he delves into metaphysics, aesthetics, and ethics, offering a comprehensive and profound analysis of human existence. The book is considered a seminal work in the realm of metaphysical philosophy, influencing thinkers such as Nietzsche and Freud. Arthur Schopenhauer, a German philosopher known for his pessimistic views on life and an influence on existential philosophy, wrote 'The World as Will and Idea' as a culmination of his philosophical thought. His deep contemplation on the nature of reality and the human experience is evident in the meticulous arguments presented throughout the volumes. I highly recommend 'The World as Will and Idea' to readers interested in delving into profound philosophical inquiries and exploring the nature of existence. Schopenhauer's work offers a thought-provoking journey into the complexities of the human mind and the world around us, challenging readers to examine their own perceptions and understanding of reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transmigration is the passing of lower entities, through the agency of life-atoms (skandas), to the crucible of evolution, either by “recycling” life-atoms after death, or by throwing away life-atoms during intense feeling. Metempsychosis is the progress of an animal soul to a higher stage of existence. Metangismos was the technical term for metempsychosis among the Pythagoreans. Reincarnation is the rebirth of the same Ego in successive human bodies. Metempsychosis, Setting A. A virtuous, but not entirely pure, soul withdraws to high realms of subjectivity for a period of rest before submitting to a further period of imprisonment in the flesh. Metempsychosis, Setting B. A virtuous soul, purified by “self-induced and self-devised efforts,” realises its essential unity with the Self of All, and annihilates its self-conscious materiality in favour of the true peace and justice that dwells in Unconscious Immateriality. Metempsychosis, Setting C. An irredeemably vicious soul that has been cut off from its Spiritual Master and Saviour, is downgraded to infernal worlds for punishment and terminal demise. Human souls do not enter animal bodies, for Nature will not reverse the order of her kingdoms. Only the life-atoms of a dissolved physical body do so. Reincarnation means re-infleshment. Palingenesis means re-generation. Metensomatosis means re-embodiment. The difference between reincarnation, palingenesis, and metensomatosis explained. Gilgulim, permutation, and revolution, differ from transmigration and metempsychosis. Gilgulim is the cyclic or revolving process of births, deaths, and rebirths. But Palestine is neither land nor locus, it is the Nirvana of the Buddhists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a nearly two-thousand-year interlude, and just as Christian Europe was in the throes of the great Witch Hunt and what historians have referred to as "The Age of the Demoniac," accounts of spirit possession began to proliferate in the Jewish world. Concentrated at first in the Near East but spreading rapidly westward, spirit possession, both benevolent and malevolent, emerged as perhaps the most characteristic form of religiosity in early modern Jewish society. Adopting a comparative historical approach, J. H. Chajes uncovers this strain of Jewish belief to which scant attention has been paid. Informed by recent research in historical anthropology, Between Worlds provides fascinating descriptions of the cases of possession as well as analysis of the magical techniques deployed by rabbinic exorcists to expel the ghostly intruders. Seeking to understand the phenomenon of spirit possession in its full complexity, Chajes delves into its ideational framework—chiefly the doctrine of reincarnation—while exploring its relation to contemporary Christian and Islamic analogues. Regarding spirit possession as a form of religious expression open to—and even dominated by—women, Chajes initiates a major reassessment of women in the history of Jewish mysticism. In a concluding section he examines the reception history of the great Hebrew accounts of spirit possession, focusing on the deployment of these "ghost stories" in the battle against incipient skepticism in the turbulent Jewish community of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Exploring a phenomenon that bridged learned and ignorant, rich and poor, men and women, Jews and Gentiles, Between Worlds maps for the first time a prominent feature of the early modern Jewish religious landscape, as quotidian as it was portentous: the nexus of the living and the dead.
