Book excerpt: Trialkoxyboranes and trialkoxyboroxins are synthesized by a novel and efficient route of esterifying boric acid with various alcohols in the presence of calcium hydride. Some of these boranes were used as precursors for transmetallation reactions. Trialkoxyboroxins can be obtained using a 1:1 molar ratio of boric acid to alcohol in the presence of calcium hydride. A special feature of trialkoxyboranes and trialkoxyboroxins is their ability to be interconverted by the addition of the appropriate amounts of boric acid or the hydroxyl compound in the presence of calcium hydride. Biscyclopentadienylzirconium-alkenyl-chlorides, Cp2Zr(alkenyl)Cl, are prepared from the hydrozirconation of terminal and internal alkynes. A systematic investigation of the transmetallation of these alkenyl groups from zirconium to a variety of boron compounds is presented. The reaction of the organozirconium with a boron chloride or bromide results in the exchange of the halogen and alkenyl group, forming structurally different types of alkenylboranes in good to high yields. A general method for preparing pure organohaloboranes (RBX2 and R2BX) was developed with high isolated yields and product purity. The reaction proceeds via the exchange of the anhydrides of boronic or borinic acids, (RBO)3 or R2BOBR2 with trihaloboranes (BX3). The newly formed organohaloboranes can contain hydroboratable (primary or secondary), non-hydroboratable (tertiary or aryl) and chiral groups. To demonstrate the utility of the facile migration from zirconium to boron, the syntheses of trans, trans-1,3-dienes and trisubstituted olefins are examined. Generally the olefin synthesis, via organoboranes, has been limited to coupling of alkylvinylboranes that contain symmetrical vinyl groups. The high regioselectivity of the hydrozirconation reaction with unsymmetrical internal alkynes overcomes this limitation. Thus, trisubstituted olefins containing three distinct organic groups about the double bond were readily synthesized using established organoborane chemistry. A number of preparations for zirconacycles have appeared in the literature. Since borocycles, ring structures containing a boron atom, are not easily prepared via normal hydroboration reactions, the use of metallacycles to prepare borocycle derivatives was investigated.

Book excerpt: Treatment of tetrakis(dimethylamido)zirconium with four equivalents of primary and secondary amides in refluxing toluene, followed by sublimation of the crude products afforded tetrakis(N-tert-butylacetamido)zirconium, tetrakis(N-isopropylisobutyramido)zirconium, tetrakis(N-isopropylacetamido)-zirconium, tetrakis(N-methylacetamido)zirconium, and tetrakis(N-tert-butylformamido)zirconium as colorless crystalline solids. The structural assignments for the new complexes were based upon spectral and analytical data and by X-ray crystal structure determinations for tetrakis(N-tert-butylacetamido)zirconium, tetrakis(N-isopropylacetamido)zirconium, tetrakis(N-methylacetamido)zirconium, and tetrakis(N-tert-butylformamido)zirconium. These complexes are monomeric in the solid state, with eight-coordinate metal centers surrounded by four k2-amidate ligands. Solid state decomposition temperatures for the zirconium complexes range between 218-335 degrees Celsius. Treatment of tris(tert-butylperoxy)borane with one equivalent of 4-dimethylaminopyridine or ammonia, quantitatively yielded colorless crystalline complexes. The structural assignment for the 4-dimethylaminopyridine adduct was based upon spectral and X-ray crystal structure determinations. The thermal stability and volatility evaluation of bis[tris(pyrazolyl)borate]ruthenium(II) is reported as a potential precursor for the deposition of ruthenium containing films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the refractory nature of zirconium hydride and zirconium oxide, analysis of these materials for trace amounts of boron may be affected adversely by loss of boron or contamination from the container during decomposition. Both sources of error may be obviated by a direct spectrochemical analysis employing either copper fluoride or sodium carbonate as pyroelectric distillation carriers. Since both the hydride and oxide appear to behave similarly in the arc with these carriers, easily prepared zirconium oxide standards were useable for analysis of both materials. Acid or fusion decompositions of the two compounds to allow separation of boron as trimethyl borate were studied. Decomposition was successful with refluxing sulfuric acid, and partly successful with sodium carbonate melts. Loss of boron during conversion of zirconium hydride to the oxide was indicated during a study of the ignition conditions, and shown conclusively by spectrographic examination of the off-gases. Contamination of the sample material by boron from new platinum ware was also found. Agreement of spectrochemical and curcumin colorimetric determinations of boron zirconium hydride was fairly good, but both methods lacked precision. The low precision may be attributable to inhomogeneity of the sample material.

This first comprehensive treatment of this important research field covers the entire field and reveals the links between the various chemical disciplines. It thus adopts an interdisciplinary approach, making it of interest to the whole chemical community. A must for organic, inorganic, catalytic and complex chemists, as well as those working with/on organometallics.
