Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the most central, yet criticised, solutions for international tourism promotion, namely translation. It brings together theory and practice, explores the various challenges involved in translating tourism promotional materials (TPMs), and puts forward a sustainable solution capable of achieving maximum impact in the industry and society. The solution, in the form of a Cultural-Conceptual Translation (CCT) model, identifies effective translation strategies and offers a platform for making TPM translation more streamlined, efficient and easily communicated. Using the English-Malay language combination as a case study, the book analyses tourism discourse and includes a road test of the CCT model on actual end-users of TPMs as well as tourism marketers in the industry. Guidelines for best practices in the industry round out the book, which offers valuable insights not only for researchers but also, and more importantly, various stakeholders in the translation, tourism and advertising industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional theories of translation studies are often used to guide the localized translation of traditional marketing and advertising texts, including websites. Today, social media marketing facilitates the global diffusion of a company's advertising message, yet smaller businesses such as those in the tourism industry often lack resources to create multiple localized campaigns on social networking sites. Due to the global nature of the product offered, these small tourism companies frequently serve markets that do not share a common language, yet the Ecuadorian small and micro tourism enterprises studied in this thesis rarely implemented language-specific pages for each market. Survey results and first-hand observation of company strategies show that most companies studied were not consistently reaching their multilingual audience on social networking sites. To address this issue, functional theories of translation studies such as Vermeer's skopostheorie were used in this thesis to devise a framework to guide the process of multilingual marketing on single page social networking sites for companies targeting markets with complex communication and translation needs. The expansion and application of functional theories of translation studies to this marketing dilemma benefits companies by providing practical recommendations toward the more consistent and effective implementation of multiple languages on a single site.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Nations, grade: 1,7, Bielefeld University, course: Sociology of Travel, language: English, abstract: The paper analyzes the travel industry and their commitment to the internet regarding advantages and disadvantages, like the role of review platforms and the ability to compare online. How did the changes over the years transform the industry and its consumers? Over the past years, the tourism industry had depended heavily on marketing using the power of the word of mouth. It used to be our family and friends, who would assist in the planning of our traveling, with the assistance of travel agencies, magazines and tourism guides. With the emergence of digital technologies in the present world however, the word of mouth has been prolonged to a limited group of people who are widely spread all over the world. Social Media, a greater outcome of digital technology is now being used to connect travelers to the recommendations and opinions of people all over the world. The development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), within the last two distinctly different decades, have greatly transformed the tourism sector in almost all parts of the world. Within its tactical level, ICT makes it possible for the e-Commerce to thrive and subsequently assist the tourism organizations to fully maximize their general efficiency as well as effectiveness while at the strategic level, ICT has helped in restricting the tourism and travel chain together with the relationships which are there between the individual tourism organizations and the relevant stakeholders to the sector.
