Data were gathered from teachers at three Midwestern United States' high schools. Data were obtained through two sets of 14 Likert scale questions, distributed through Google Forms, an electronic survey tool. One set of questions specifically addressed teachers' perceptions regarding traditional grading. The second set of questions specifically addressed teachers' perceptions regarding standards-based reporting. In addition, data were collected from open-ended response questions. Finally, phone interviews were conducted with volunteer participants. Several differences between traditional grading and standards based reporting emerged from this study. These differences included (a) the ways in which grades were calculated, (b) the types of information included in grades, (c) the purpose of the grades and impact on instruction, and (d) the perceived validity of the grades. In addition, common suggestions regarding the implementation process surfaced from open-ended responses and phone interviews.

Although the inaccuracies of grading have been written about for over 100 years, schools have been slow to tackle grading reform. This research study is based on a case study which investigated the implementation of standards-based grading from traditional grading in one middle school. This case study was developed to answer one research question: How was standards-based grading implemented in the middle school? The research obtained in this case study will be used with the researcher’s own school community as they transition to standards-based grading. The case study involved semi-structured interviews of parents, teachers, and administrators along with public documents which included state mandated assessment scores and state school report cards. This study sought to extract the purpose, process, and outcomes to which the participating middle school transitioned from traditional grading to standards-based grading. The purpose for changing to standards-based grading was based on the low reading scores of graduating seniors. Over the last nine years, the process of transitioning to standards-based grading took place with several representations of the report card. The middle school’s current standards-based report card is a combination, or conversion chart of numeric levels, proficiency levels, and percentages. The outcomes for this middle school were varied based upon the individual students and their needs. Numerous lessons were learned by the researcher during this study. It is important to build capacity with all of the stakeholders when addressing the purpose of any significant change. A deep, collective understanding of the purpose for changing to standards-based grading are the foundation for a successful implementation. This type of process will vary as individual schools transition to standards-based grading, but schools must start with the end result and product clearly defined. The outcomes will be based on the building of a foundation with the purpose, as well as the level of detail and accountability throughout the process. The transition from traditional grading to standards-based grading is a daunting task that takes years to complete, but with the support and hard work of all stakeholders, it can be beneficial to the learning of all students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to learn about the experiences of teachers as they transition from traditional grading practices to standards-based reporting (sbr). In order to achieve this overall objective, the following research questions framed this qualitative study: (1) What understandings related to practices do middle school teachers have as they transition from traditional grading practices to standards-based reporting? (2) What kinds of supports do teachers need as they transition from traditional grading practices to standards-based reporting? (3) Is there a change in teachers' clarity regarding what their students know, understand, and do as they transition from traditional grading practices to standards-based reporting? Twelve teachers from a Midwestern suburban middle school were interviewed individually and in focus groups to provide insight into the research questions. Interviews were conducted face-to-face and analyzed. Six themes emerged from the data. First, in a sbr grading scheme, a grade truly represents what a student knows, understands, and is able to do. Second, sbr helps teachers achieve clarity in what their individual students know, understand, and are able to do. Third, active engagement, trust, and support from administration is valued and needed by educators transitioning to sbr. Fourth, resources such as time, professional literature, collaborating with peers, aligning rubrics with the curriculum, observing others implementing sbr, and adopting a reporting tool that is SBR-friendly are essential components of support. Fifth, formative assessment, flexible grouping, and differentiation are instructional practices that naturally lead to sbr. Sixth, opportunities for parent education and effective communication with stakeholders are imperative for a successful sbr transition. The teachers in this study appeared to be happier and more satisfied with their work in moving students forward in their learning when implementing sbr, evidenced by students learning at higher levels as well as teacher clarity in students' instructional needs. The success of the implementation of sbr was due, in part, to a slow, multi-year process of transforming practices that naturally led to sbr such as formative assessment, flexible grouping, feedback, and differentiation. Equally important to changes in instruction was a collaborative culture committed to engaging all students in learning at high levels. Recommendations for future research are to study schools at the secondary level that have fully implemented sbr, schools that have adopted a dual system of letter grades and sbr, and college level students who have graduated from a secondary sbr system. The study focused on perceptions of central office administrators (1), building administrators (5), and teachers (65 from grades 6-12) who had been using a standards-based grading and reporting system for several years or were in the first year of implementation. Four research questions guided this qualitative study, and data were collected using three instruments: a survey, an open-ended questionnaire, and individual interviews. Results revealed the ability of standards-based grading to clearly identify students' strengths and weaknesses, allowing for adaptations to curriculum, instruction, and assessments according to student needs. Additionally, teachers changed some instructional practices to enhance student achievement and varied reporting methods to communicate student mastery within a standards-based system. Furthermore, time was essential for professional development, education of stakeholders, technology training, and for conversations about differences in philosophies pertaining to standards-based grading. Finally, participants agreed that the current traditional grading system did not adequately communicate student mastery; however, concerns were raised about the lack of support and congruence of the computerized grading program, lack of parental knowledge about standards-based grading, and lack of time to properly implement a standards-based system.
