Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organometallic chemistry is an interdisciplinary science which continues to grow at a rapid pace. Although there is continued interest in synthetic and structural studies the last decade has seen a growing interest in the potential of organometallic chemistry to provide answers to problems in catalysis synthetic organic chemistry and also in the development of new materials. This Specialist Periodical Report aims to reflect these current interests reviewing progress in theoretical organometallic chemistry, main group chemistry, the lanthanides and all aspects of transition metal chemistry. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE textbook on organometallic chemistry. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the German original is already a classic, making this third completely revised and updated English edition a must for graduate students and lecturers in chemistry, inorganic chemists, chemists working with/on organometallics, bioinorganic chemists, complex chemists, and libraries. Over one third of the chapters have been expanded to incorporate developments since the previous editions, while the chapter on organometallic catalysis in synthesis and production appears for the first time in this form. From the reviews of the first English editions: 'The selection of material and the order of its presentation is first class ... Students and their instructors will find this book extraordinarily easy to use and extraordinarily useful.' -Chemistry in Britain 'Elschenbroich and Salzer have written the textbook of choice for graduate or senior-level courses that place an equal emphasis on main group element and transition metal organometallic chemistry. ... this book can be unequivocally recommended to any teacher or student of organometallic chemistry.' - Angewandte Chemie International Edition 'The breadth and depth of coverage are outstanding, and the excitement of synthetic organometallic chemistry comes across very strongly.' - Journal of the American Chemical Society

Book excerpt: Rodd's Chemistry of Carbon Compounds, Volume II: Alicyclic Compounds focuses on alicyclic chemistry. The book first ponders on acyclic and monocyclic monoterpenoids, including artemisyl, santolinyl, chrysanthemyl, and other irregular systems; naturally occurring halogenated monoterpenoids; cyclobutanes; and tetramethylcyclohexanes. The text discusses the carotenoid group of natural products. Trends in carotenoid chemical research; improved methodology; optical isomerism including aliene isomerism; and geometrical isomerism are described. The book discusses cycloheptanes and cyclooctanes, large alicyclic ring systems, and polycarbonic compounds with separate ring systems and spiro compounds. The text describes polycyclic compounds and polycarbocyclic bridged ring compounds, and then discusses bicarbocyclic natural products. The Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement; camphor and related compounds; fenchone and related compounds; and carane, thujane, and pinane groups are also considered. The text is a valuable reference for readers interested in the study of carbon compounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume starts the updating of the information on organonickel chemistry, one of the most active areas of modern organometallic chemistry. It covers all mononuclear compounds containing one nickel-to-carbon bond. The main part is devoted to the family of planar NiII compounds, RNi(D)2X, which within 20 years has increased from about 250 to more than 1000 members. This research interest has been stimulated by the fact that many compounds insert various unsaturated species into the Ni-C bond to create new organonickel species. Moreover, these compounds are important as intermediates in many catalytic processes involving organic halides. Compounds containing h*2-bonded heteroalkene molecules including the C1 fragments CO2 and CS2, and related metallocyclic compounds are also emphasized in this volume. These types of compounds play an important role in a number of nickel-catalyzed co-oligomerization reactions involving unsaturated organic compounds. Most of the compounds are well-characterized by modern spectroscopic techniques. The various types of compounds are in most cases confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The author of these volumes, a member of the M lheim group, has made many contributions of his own and is eminently qualified to critically review this area of research.

Book excerpt: Organometallic Compounds and Living Organisms provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of organometallic compounds and living organisms. This book discusses the biological effects of organometallic compounds. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the recognition of methylmercuric compounds as the causative agents of Minamata disease, which has generated intensive research of their toxic effects. This text then examines the number of investigative applications of the biological inertness of silicones. Other chapters consider the capacity of many organometals to deactivate enzymes, which makes these compounds very useful for studying the nature of the enzyme active site. This book discusses as well the use and preparation of organometallurium compounds as imaging agents. The final chapter deals with the formation and cleavage of metal(loid)–carbon bonds, which play significant roles in the environmental transformation and circulation of metal(loids). This book is a valuable resource for chemists.

Book excerpt: From the beginning of chemistry as an exact (natural) science - almost 200 years ago - there was a more or less distinct differentiation between its various branches such as organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, or biochemistry. With the increasing insight into the connections and governing laws it soon became obvious, however, that such a clear separation could be regarded as more or less obsolete; within almost any field of chemical research one has to deal with most of the branches mentioned. Especially organic and inorganic chemistry are significant examples for this statement, overlapping considerably within the important field of organome tallic chemistry. This regime of chemistry started its advance with the discovery of dimethylzinc 150 years ago, had a highlight with the introduction of Grignard reagents around 1900, developed further with the start of lithium organyls in 1925 and literally exploded after the discovery of the first transition metal cyclopenta dienyl complex ferrocene half a century ago. The chronological sequence of the important steps, i. e. 1850 (Zn) - 1900 (Mg) - 1925 (Li) - 1950 (Fe), seems rather remarkable. The increasing group of metallocenes is not only of high theoretical and, due to the potential chirality of its members, stereochemical interest, but offers also a wide variety of extremely useful catalysts, especially for stereoselective reactions. The Austrian Chemical Society took this development into account by organizing the Twelfth International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry held in Vienna in 1985.
