Book excerpt: The application of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) is very effective in the fast-growing wind generator (WG) market. The foremost concern for the DFIG based WG system is to maintain the transient stability during fault, as the stator of the DFIG is directly connected to the grid. Therefore, transient stability enhancement of the DFIG is very important. In this work, a diode-bridge-type nonsuperconducting fault current limiter (NSFCL) and resistive solid-state fault current limiter (R-type SSFCL) are examined to augment the transient stability of the DFIG based WG system. In simulations, temporary balanced and unbalanced faults were applied in the test system to investigate the proposed NSFCL and the R-type SSFCL transient stability performance. Besides a DC resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), bridge-type fault current limiter (BFCL) and series dynamic braking resistor (SDBR) are also considered to compare their performance with the proposed NSFCL and R-type SSFCL. These simulations were performed with Matlab/Simulink software. Simulation results clearly indicate that the NSFCL and R-type SSFCL enhances the transient stability of the DFIG based WG. Moreover, the NSFCL works better than the DC resistive SFCL, BFCL and SDBR in every aspect and R-type SSFCL works better than the SDBR in all aspect.

In this work, two new braking resistor models, namely, rectifier controlled braking resistor and chopper rectifier controlled braking resistor mod-els, using a single unit of braking resistor are proposed, and their performance is compared with the existing thyristor controlled braking resistor model. Comparison is made in terms of the speed indices, number of components used, heat loss, harmonics, and cost. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is tested through Matlab/ Simulink simu-lations considering both temporary and permanent faults in power system. Simulation results for all braking resistor models are compared and analyzed. The performance of the proposed models is comparable to the existing braking resistor model. Therefore, the proposed braking resistor models can be considered as an alternative to the existing BR model for improving the transient stability of power systems.

Book excerpt: Due to environmental concerns, offshore wind plant will play an important role in next decades for meeting the requirement of carbon emission and renewable energy target. The variable speed wind turbine will not have a load-frequency response similar with traditional synchronous generator which may cause the inertia less problems in the system. The UK National Grid has developed scenarios where high wind power penetration levels are considered which are likely to change the patterns of UK transmission network operation and dynamic performance. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an analytical capability which can assess the system dynamic performance ahead of the anticipated changes. Although some work has been reported in this area, the studies are either based on very simple network representations or involve very complex proprietary network modelling not publically available and with results which are often difficult to interpret. This thesis aims to develop appropriate ways of deriving a representative dynamic system model using UK transmission system as a benchmark. The methodology "Individual channel analysis and design (ICAD)" is utilized to realise the trade-off between plant dynamical requirements (feedback design) and the limitations (coupling effects) on achieving such requirements in multivariable system. A representative 21 bus dynamic model of the entire UK transmission system based on Ten Year Statement has been developed and implemented in Power System Simulator (PSS/E). A few recent system-wide events, captured by the existing Phasor Measurement Units (PMU), have been used to validate the frequency response of the model. Moreover, the General Electric (GE) type DFIG models are added for the purpose of analysing the future system performance with the increasing penetration levels of wind energy. The case study reveals that improvements are to be had by transmission line reinforcements under appropriate wind energy distribution scenarios with system transient stability largely improved. The impact of key influencing factors such as the size of the largest generating unit for n-1 contingency, amount of primary system response, frequency dependency of load, and others are presented. The study concludes that none of the individual factors can provide a complete solution and that careful cost benefit analysis is needed to determine the proper mix of services and reinforcements needed in the future.

In this work, to enhance the fault ride-through capability of a fixed speed wind generator system, a modified configuration of Bridge-Type Fault Current Limiter (BFCL) is proposed. To check the effectiveness of the proposed BFCL, its performance is compared with that of the Series Dynamic Braking Resistor (SDBR). A harmonic performance improvement by the proposed method is also analyzed. Three-line-to-ground (3LG), line-to-line (LL) and single-line-to-ground (1LG) faults were applied to one of the double circuit transmission lines connected to the wind generator system. Simulations were carried out using Matlab/Simulink software. Simulation results show that the proposed BFCL is very effective device to achieve the FRT and suppress fault current that eliminates the need for circuit breaker replacement. Also, the BFCL improves the harmonic performance and helps follow harmonic grid code. Moreover, it was found that the BFCL works better than the SDBR, and has some distinct advantages over the SDBR.
