Book excerpt: This brief, accessible book covers all aspects of transient global amnesia (TGA). First, it deals with the history of TGA before moving on to clinical and diagnostic features, and differential diagnosis. The investigation and management of TGA is then discussed, followed by treatment and prognosis. Each of the chapters is devoted to a practical and structured overview of the particular topic, with use of case studies to illustrate the material. Based in part on the author’s experience of TGA cases over 15 years and in part on a review of the published literature, this book will hopefully enlighten clinicians from a broad range of medical backgrounds on the clinical features, investigation, and pathogenesis of TGA. Transient Global Amnesia is aimed at any clinician with an interest in, or who encounters patients with, acute amnesia: neurologists, general physicians, old age psychiatrists, geriatricians, clinical neuropsychologists, and primary care physicians, as well as other professions allied to medicine with similar interests, such as members of memory assessment teams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years have passed since the last edition (3rd) of this book was published. In the intervening years, several reviews of this book have provided highly encouraging remarks about the value of this book in transmitting information on classification and treatment of psychiatric disorders to the audience. We are proposing to revise all chapters with an eye on accuracy and ease of use, and this is an especially timely endeavor with the upcoming publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual V. All the appropriate new information on biology, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders will be added to the current proposed edition. It is our goal to recruit the same authors (if possible) who contributed to the previous edition. While all chapters will be updated (see TOC), those marked by asterisks will be the most likely to undergo more revision. Psychiatry has emerged as a burgeoning scientific field with major advances in etiology and treatment of several disorders. Just as there was excitement in the anatomic advances that took place a hundred years ago when Emil Kraepelin and his collaborators took on the enormous task of classification of psychiatric disorders based on rational scientific thinking, new advances in genetics, biochemistry, neuroanatomy and pharmacotherapy of mental disorders have brought us even closer to a better understanding of complex disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and even autism. The major goal of the previous edition of this classic book was to update the busy clinician, psychiatric resident and medical student with the most up-to-date information on etiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. This goal remains the focus of the fourth edition of this book. In this updated and expanded edition, the reader will be provided with the most contemporary information and literature supported by a close survey of the field. This new edition of this classic title, with its focus on biologic and medical aspects of psychiatry, will continue to be of significant help to all interested in the scientific practice of psychiatry.

Book excerpt: Memory complaints are a frequent feature of psychiatric disorder, even in the absence of organic disease. In this practical reference for the clinician, first published in 2000, German Berrios and John Hodges lead an international team of eminent psychiatrists, behavioural neurologists and clinical psychologists to focus on the psychiatric and organic aspects of memory disorders from the perspective of the multidisciplinary memory clinic. These disorders include organic syndromes such as the dementias, the amnesic syndrome and transient amnestic states, and also psychiatric aspects of memory disorders in the functional psychoses. Among the specific topics reviewed are the paramnesias, conditions such as déjà vu, flashbulb and flashback memories, and the problems of recovered, false and feigned memories. Throwing light on established conditions, and also introducing two new syndromes, this book makes a major contribution to the understanding and clinical management of memory disorders in psychiatry, neuropsychology and other disciplines.

Book excerpt: In the aftermath of a shattering illness, Lonni Sue Johnson lives in a "perpetual now," where she has almost no memories of the past and a nearly complete inability to form new ones. The Perpetual Now is the moving story of this exceptional woman, and the groundbreaking revelations about memory, learning, and consciousness her unique case has uncovered. Lonni Sue Johnson was a renowned artist who regularly produced covers for The New Yorker, a gifted musician, a skilled amateur pilot, and a joyful presence to all who knew her. But in late 2007, she contracted encephalitis. The disease burned through her hippocampus like wildfire, leaving her severely amnesic, living in a present that rarely progresses beyond ten to fifteen minutes. Remarkably, she still retains much of the intellect and artistic skills from her previous life, but it's not at all clear how closely her consciousness resembles yours or mine. As such, Lonni Sue's story has become part of a much larger scientific narrative—one that is currently challenging traditional wisdom about how human memory and awareness are stored in the brain. In this probing, compassionate, and illuminating book, award-winning science journalist Michael D. Lemonick uses the unique drama of Lonni Sue Johnson's day-to-day life to give us a nuanced and intimate understanding of the science that lies at the very heart of human nature.

They emphasize the need for clinical reasoning, integrative thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork and self-directed learning – all desirable generic skills for health care professionals. This book is a teaching tool that bridges the gap between textbook information and everyday experience of clinicians 'in the trenches'. Leading practitioners bring a practical approach to these complex conditions, highlighting specific areas of diagnostic uncertainty in evaluation and treatment. Each case is taken from real-world clinical practice and reviews the diagnostic and treatment process in a systematic manner, identifying common challenges and potential pitfalls. This concise and useful guide in the Common Pitfalls series provides a step-by-step guide for everyday clinical practice, invaluable to anyone dealing with cerebrovascular disease on a front-line basis. The intended readership is trainees and non-specialist practitioners in neurology, stroke medicine, and neurosurgery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is one of the most mysterious clinical conditions in Neurology. Occurring usually only once in middle to late age, the affected person is suddenly robbed of memory, for the past, the present, and briefly, the future. Repetitive questioning without learning the answers supplied marks the typical case and frightened family members and significant others labor to bring the patient into hospital for scanning and medical evaluation. Although the cut off time for duration is 24 hours, most cases clear in 4-6 hours, with no memory of what happened during the elapsed time. I have reviewed the 2 existing textbooks on TGA, the last of which was published in 1991 plus 5554 articles from the rich troth of medical literature. I review the early history of amnesia and early articles in the psychiatric literature leading up to Bender's seminal article in 1955. I divided the subject into clinical, EEG, CAT scan, SPECT, PET, sonogram and MRI papers and then discussed the literature on associated medical conditions, review articles, and aetiology, ending with a chapter on clinical work up and treatment. In total the book is 306 pages and 10 chapters. This book is an extensive review of the subject with 554 bibliography references and 45 digital images written especially for the clinical behavioral neurologist, psychiatrist, or psychologist. It is the first modern review of the subject in 21 years and it discusses the exciting DWI/MRI findings which have set the neurology world on fire. No recent article or text has reviewed transient global amnesia in such detail as this book. This same painstaking and elaborate literature review style is evidenced throughout the book, placing into one compendium a body of data and references on TGA not available anywhere else.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transient global amnesia (TGA) refers to a benign episode of memory loss of unknown aetiology, which resolves spontaneously within 24 hours. A typical feature is an inability to retain new information and, to some degree, to recall events from the past few days whilst cognitive functioning and the level of consciousness are unaffected. The clinical picture is usually obvious and no follow-up investigations or treatment are needed after a short observation period.
