Academic literature supports that sense of belonging plays a key role in persistence to graduation amongst traditional-age college students. Tinto, in his book, Completing College: Rethinking Institutional Action (2012), is quoted in his section on involvement, meaning and the sense of belonging: "Involvements, academic or social, do not occur in a vacuum. They take place within specific social and cultural settings and among individuals whose values give them meaning" (p. 66). The need to better understand sense of belonging in adult, first generation undergraduates was first revealed in my role as academic adviser through direct contact and dialogue with these students. This, along with my own history as a non-traditional, first-generation college graduate led to insights, researching of the literature, a pilot study, and the completion of this dissertation. The results are particularly poignant because they look at sense of belonging during a worldwide pandemic with interviews done in the summer of 2021. The adult, first-generation college student perceptions of belonging generated a view slightly different from that of their traditional aged peers. Data analysis produced a grounded theory model: Sense of Belonging: Connections through Communities of Practice. The grounded theory produced a snapshot of a population of students as they navigated the university. Studying during the pandemic created an opportunity to discuss nuances of belonging in different environments and what that might look like for students moving forward. It is the goal and objective of this dissertation to better understand sense of belonging in adult, first-generation undergraduates and how that contributes to academic persistence. One value of this study is learning how adult first-generation undergraduates connect, find community, and develop a sense of belonging. The second value is an historical glimpse of this population's views during a worldwide pandemic. The third is the study's model which frames the data into an understanding of how participants communicated their sense of belonging and connection. The model provides administrators, faculty, and those interested in first-generation student success a useful set of implications and recommendations for policy and practice. Opportunity for further discussion, and future research is also present. Adult, first-generation undergraduate students are trailblazers; reading their perspectives on sense of belonging, and proposed ways for support and connection at the university, may offer insights and fresh ideas to the general reader and researcher alike.

As we see a decline of "traditional" aged students and financial pressures on higher education increase, transfer students are more essential to the enrollment stability than in previous eras. Transfer students are also a diverse group including underserved populations such as various ethnic groups, ages, and economically disadvantaged students. Despite these facts, many institutions do not put commensurate resources in serving transfer students as first-time students. This study was conducted to determine how engagement and sense of belonging affected transfer student persistence. The study used a sequential explanatory mixed method approach. The survey was designed to measure student engagement and sense of belonging as well as capture demographic information such as age, gender, and race / ethnicity. The survey results informed the focus group questions as well as purposeful sampling of participants. The responses of participants in the focus groups showed a significant difference in how various demographic groups responded. I found that overall engagement was low, and sense of belonging was only moderate. There was a correlation between engagement and sense of belonging, particularly within the academic engagement constructs. Male students reported a lower sense of belonging compared to female students. White students were less engaged than other race / ethnic groups. Interestingly, faculty interactions had the highest impact on student sense of belonging. Institutions of higher education need to recognize the value this complex group of students adds to the institution and design mechanisms to meet their needs. They need to create and maintain a campus-wide pedagogy that encourages faculty and student engagement in academic and career focused conversations as early as orientation. In addition, institutions need to build opportunities for male students to develop sense of belonging in ways that will inspire persistence.

Systematic variation in students' sense of belonging at college may be a factor. Existing literature suggests that a better understanding of student belonging at the college level can help to improve college outcomes, particularly for racial/ethnic minorities who are often underrepresented on college campuses and may benefit from well-designed systems of support to bolster their sense of belonging. This study was designed to improve our understanding of student belonging, its components, and its correlates for a diverse group of college students. Self-reported survey data were collected from 159 college sophomores (about a quarter of the class) from one small private and predominantly white college with graduation rates that varied by student ethnicity. Factor analysis produced three reliable and independent measures of belonging: social belonging, academic belonging, and perceived institutional support. Further investigation of this sample indicated that the general measures of college students' 'sense of belonging' found in the literature are mainly social in nature and therefore mask more nuanced associations with important variables that are revealed with separate measurement of academic belonging and perceived institutional support. Results from a set of multivariate stepwise regression analyses suggested that student demographics (ethnicity, parent education, and gender) jointly did not explain a significant amount of variance in any measure of student belonging. Rather, institutional and interpersonal variables (e.g., students' perception of the college's commitment to diversity, students' perception of the personal relevance of the curriculum) jointly explained a significant amount of variance in all three measures of belonging, suggesting that the strongest predictors of student belonging were not fixed student attributes but other variables that can be influenced to various extents by college policies and practices. Additional results indicated that social belonging and academic belonging were significantly and differentially associated with students' self-reported GPA, level of satisfaction with the institution, level of class participation, and frequency of meetings with professors outside of class time. The findings suggest that while social belonging has important associations with measures of academic performance and outcomes, academic belonging is also important and distinct. Differentiating the measurement of 'sense of belonging' into three components may be useful both for research and for guiding institutional policies and practices. It allows us to identify more precisely what facet of belonging is being measured, and how each is differentially associated with 'college experience' variables and educational outputs of interest.

Previous literature has found links between participating in student organizations and retention as well as positive academic and psychological outcomes. Previous literature has also linked perceptions of belonging in educational settings, such as universities, to retention and positive academic and psychological outcomes. Additionally, literature about underrepresented students in higher education suggests that these students may obtain an even greater benefit from perceiving belonging to a student organization compared to their majority peers. The results from two separate, but related surveys conducted in the same semester are examined in this dissertation, organized into Study 1 (presented in Chapter 3) and Study 2 (presented in Chapter 4). Both studies examine student perceptions of belonging to student organizations (group belonging). Results from Study 1 demonstrate the importance of being a group member for academic success and perceptions of group belonging for psychological well-being. This study did not find support for the hypothesis that there would be stronger associations between perceptions of group belonging and academic success and psychological well-being for underrepresented students. Study 2 examined the factors that contribute to the perception of belonging within student organizations, finding that group cohesion and membership in an academic organization were significantly associated with students' sense of group belonging. This study did not find support for the hypothesis that there would be stronger associations between group cohesion, individual motivation, and activity type and perceptions of group belonging for underrepresented students, compared to their peers. Chapter 5 includes an overall discussion of the two studies together, including implications for practice and a discussion of the limitations to the study design as well as direction for future research.

Book excerpt: This study explored perceptions of sense of belonging in academic and social contexts at West Coast University for Indian international LGBQ students in the United States with a focus on how institutional contexts and sociohistorical factors influence perceptions of sense of belonging on campus at the intersection of multiple identities. To address individual and institutional factors, a critical qualitative framework of Intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989, 1991) and a constructivist qualitative framework of Sense of Belonging (Strayhorn, 2012) grounded this phenomenological study. The current study used intersectionality to highlight the multiple and intersecting sociohistorical structures that influence Indian international LGBQ students' perceptions of sense of belonging on campus. Sense of Belonging encapsulates how perceptions of personal and interpersonal experiences impact an individual's connectedness and overall success on campus. Strayhorn (2012) conceptualization of Sense of Belonging into seven elements is used in framing and analyzing the study. The seven elements are (a) sense of belonging is a basic human need; (b) is a fundamental motive; (c) takes on heightened importance in certain contexts at certain times in certain populations; (d) is related to, and seemingly is a consequence of, mattering; (e) social identities intersect and affect college students' sense of belonging; (f) engenders other positive outcomes; and (g)m be satisfied on a continual basis and likely changes as circumstances, conditions and contexts change (Strayhorn, 2012). All four participants partook in three semi-structured phenomenological interviews based on Seidman's (2013) three-part interview structure: (a) focused life history- understanding of individual and cultural values and journey to U.S. higher education; (b) details of the experience - exploring individual interactions in campus and academic contexts; and (c) reflection on the meaning of the phenomenon - how individuals perceive and make meaning of these experiences. The data analysis developed three major themes: (1) Defying Boundaries, Defining Self and Community, (2) Speaking Language to Power, and (3) Centering Self within Sociohistorical Contexts. Overall, participants did not feel strong sense of belonging on campus. While interpersonal relationships fostered some belonging, there was a clear lack of overall perceptions of sense of belonging within academic and social contexts. The most salient facets of identity influencing sense of belonging for Indian international LGBQ students were sexuality, race, international student status, linguistic ability, and gender. While undergraduate and graduate students had similar perceptions of sense of belonging, graduate students expressed a need for relationships with other Indian international students while undergraduate students intentionally looked for domestic social circles. At the institutional level, salient factors influencing belongingness for Indian international LGBQ students were: (a) lack of awareness among domestic peers and faculty; (b) lack of visibility of Indian international LGBQ identities and communities on campus, (c) English language testing and requirements and (d) lack of institutional funding support. Intersecting sociohistorical factors influenced individual perceptions of sense of belonging by creating a culture where students did not feel it possible to express their intersectional identities on campus. Finally the study ends with recommendations for practice and research by higher education professionals and scholars. The study concludes recommendations for practice and research to foster sense of belonging for Indian international LGBQ students by enhancing support and services specifically for this population while also challenging current definitions of sense of belonging and expanding monolithic representations of international students.

Using an equal status sequential mixed model design guided by the pragmatist research paradigm, this study provides a number of findings that add to the literature on how institutional experiences influence college students’ sense of belonging. First, findings from the current study indicate that instructor expectancy messages about student success are positively related to students’ sense of belonging at both the University- and classroom-level. Second, the meaning that each student makes of instructor messages deferentially contributes to their sense of belonging. Third, students’ race/ethnicity does not play a substantial role in either of these relationships. In addition to findings, implications for practice, research, and theory are explored.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to investigate the feeling of belonging that students may or may not have and the relationship of student sense of belonging to the overall academic achievement of a school. Students were surveyed on their sense of belonging in selected middle schools. The students scored themselves on the Psychological Sense of School Membership scale, which revealed an overall mean score of belonging. Students from high-performing schools were compared to students from low-performing schools in regard to their sense of belonging. Additionally, teachers were asked to rate their perception of the students' sense of belonging. The teachers' scores were compared to the students' scores in both high- and low-performing schools. Lastly, teachers were asked to provide qualitative information about the schools' role in creating a sense of belonging. An extensive review of the literature regarding sense of belonging reveals support of the importance of sense of belonging in student achievement. There is also extensive evidence regarding variation of sense of belonging among minority groups and the important role of teachers in creating a sense of belonging for students. This study found that there is no significant difference in students' reported sense of belonging between high-performing schools and low-performing schools on the Psychological Sense of School Membership scale. There is a significant difference between the teachers' perception of the students' sense of belonging and the students' reported sense of belonging on the Psychological Sense of School Membership scales. Teachers reported important roles in creating an environment of belonging. The qualitative data provided by teachers support evidence from the literature review indicative of schools with sense of belonging. High-performing schools do not report much information regarding discipline and routine as being important parts of creating belonging. However, low performing schools often report these as important to creating a sense of belonging for students. Implications of the research include: Teachers may not have an accurate understanding of students' sense of belonging and how to create a sense of belonging in schools. Further study should try to gain better understanding of the relationship between sense of belonging and minority status.
