Book excerpt: Modern school improvement processes have become collaborative efforts, encouraging administrators and teachers to examine the strengths and weaknesses of a campus in order to develop a plan for building on the strengths and improving the weaknesses. Three factors that are tied together in this process are campus leadership, school climate, and student achievement. As a result, this study examined the relationship between an elementary principal's transformational leadership qualities, the school climate, and the student achievement levels of the campus, based on information regarding the campus' STAAR scores. Survey data was collected from a purposeful sample of elementary school principals and a convenience sample of his or her respective teachers located in a small suburban school district in southeast Texas. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X) was used to measure the degree to which a principal displays the factors of a transformational leader based on teacher perceptions and was used by the principals surveyed to self-assess. The School Climate Inventory-Revised (SCI-R) was used to measure teacher perceptions of school climate. Findings indicate a statistically significant positive relationship exists between the factors of transformational leadership and the dimensions of school climate; however, there was not a statistically significant positive relationship between the factors of transformational leadership and student achievement in mathematics. The only transformational leadership characteristic that had a statistically significant relationship on reading achievement was inspirational motivation. Additionally, there was no evidence of a statistically significant relationship between the dimensions of school climate and student achievement in mathematics. However, there was a statistically significant relationship between the school climate dimensions of order and involvement and reading achievement. When determining whether a relationship existed between the principal's perceptions of their own transformational leadership qualities and the teacher's perceptions of those same factors, only two out of the 25 correlations were found to be statistically significant.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there is a relationship between transformational principal leadership style, a safe school climate, and school safety (specifically, the number of reported fights and reported bullying incidents) in Broward County, Florida's middle schools. This study also investigated if a relationship exists between transformational leadership and a safe school climate, transformational leadership, and the number of bullying incidents and student fights, and a safe school climate and the number of bullying incidents and student fights. The study surveyed 12 middle schools located in a large, urban district in south Florida. Principal leadership style was determined from the MLQ-5X, school safety climate was determined from the school district's Annual Customer Survey, and the reported number of fights and bullying incidents recorded in the school districts Discipline Management System were collected via records request for each participating middle school and tallied. Pearson correlations were conducted to examine the bivariate association between the leadership dimensions, a safe school climate, and school violence. Separate multiple linear regression models were used to examine the following relationships: leadership style and the number of reported fights and reported bullying incidents; leadership style and a safe school climate; and a safe school climate and the number of reported fights and reported bullying incidents. The findings suggested that there were no statistically significant correlations between leadership style (transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire), and bullying or fighting, and no statistically significant correlation between principal leadership style and middle school climate. There was a statistically significant correlation found between school climate and the number of student fights. The significance of this finding is important because it illustrates the adverse impact fighting has on student safety, which, in turn, adversely affects the school climate. Therefore, it is up to the school leader to create a climate where everyone feels safe can focus on student achievement.

Book excerpt: This study supports the notion that transformational leaders, over transactional leaders, produce more effective staff members, supportive school communities, and ultimately higher achieving students. Transformational leaders are relentless about the quality, integrity, and effectiveness of every facet of the position encompassed in daily interactions, weekly plans, monthly monitoring, yearly initiatives, and long-term visions. Reflection and customization to consistently improve and progress using the heart and mind are essential traits of successful transformational leaders. Staff and students perform better under transformational leadership due to the fostered connections by leaders. Teachers under transformational leaders attend more targeted professional development to inform educational practices as a result of their inspired desire to learn. Schools with transformational leaders focus on developing a tripod of support including parents, staff, and students. This study investigated the survey responses from northern New Jersey public school district teachers when asked to respond to thirty questions based on the Leadership Profile Index (LPI). The outcomes presented in this study will benefit leaders and educational institutions looking to make positive change in their school communities. It will support transformational leaders possessing the skills to influence teachers in a manner that impact schools in ways that result in positive outcomes such as inspired teachers and achieving students. Contrary to transactional leadership, this study will affirm that transformational leaders possess the desire to become truly invested in the staff, students, and larger community, which is essential for the building of relationships, a prerequisite of effective leadership. What specific leadership practices make a real difference in school effectiveness? What kinds of relationships do they have with parents, students, and staff? Principals and Student Achievement identifies 26 essential traits and behaviors of effective principals to show how they achieve success as instructional leaders. Based on a review of 81 key research articles from the last 20 years, this concise book examines how certain practices can affect student achievement, including: * Communication and interaction * Classroom observation and feedback to teachers * Recognition of student and staff achievement * Dedication to a safe and orderly school environment * Support of professional development of staff * Role modeling The book also reviews differences in instructional leadership between elementary and secondary principals, male and female principals, principals in high- and low-socioeconomic-status schools, and more. We all know that principals are important to student success, but few people have pinpointed exactly how they make a positive difference. At a time when principals are being asked to do more for school reform and accountability, Principals and Student Achievement provides a valuable resource for identifying what it takes to be an effective principal and, in turn, an effective school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the more common causes of school system failure is the absence of effective leadership. Ideally, school leaders are supposed to be the change agents and facilitators whose primary mission is to improve school culture and bring about the effective transformation that leads to a model Professional Learning Community (PLC). School leaders must focus on developing human capital by working collaboratively with teachers, students, and all who are involved within the system. Effective school leadership has been examined from a variety of perspectives, with the focus ranging from the principles of servant leadership to moral imperatives and distributed perspectives. The debate on what constitutes effective school leadership continues to be wide-ranging and complex. Today’s research scholarship will be the groundwork for how tomorrow’s schools develop a new breed of leadership. Upcoming leaders will face new, unforeseen challenges, so they must re-evaluate strategies and re-work standard processes, in order to promote sustainable development within their respective school systems. Tomorrow’s leaders will be expected to lead a diverse collective of students and teachers, to foster an enduring and empowering culture among students, teachers and other stakeholders committed to build a successful learning community.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of leadership and organizational climate on the student academic achievement. The study also investigated the moderating influence of parental involvement on to the influence of school leadership and climate on the student academic achievement. This research was conducted in the public schools in the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The study was designed to investigate research questions, as; 1). Do school leadership and climate make a change on the student academic achievement? 2). How does parental involvement contribute to interplay of school leadership and climate on student academic achievement? Based on the extant literature reviewed in this study, altogether thirteen hypotheses were framed including three mediation and three modern moderation hypotheses. The usable dataset in this study consisted of 304 teachers who were teaching in Grade 10, 11, and 12, at the time of the study in public schools of the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, who filled in the survey questionnaire for leadership, organizational climate, parental involvement, and student academic achievement. The demographic details of the sample in this study consisted of 137 male respondents (45.10%) and 167 female respondents (54.90%). Furthermore, the researcher used statistical software - the SPSS (Statistical package of Social Sciences) version 24 and the AMOS (Analysis of a Moment Structures) version 24 - to empirically test the hypotheses of this study. The results obtained for the direct impact suggest that school organizational climate, transactional, and transformational leadership positively and significantly influences the student academic achievements as both are positive and significant. However, the influence of the parental involvement on student academic achievement was not found to be significant. On the other hand, transformational leadership and school climate were found to positively and significantly influence the involvement the students' parent, whereas the influence of the transactional leadership on the parental involvement of the students were found to be non-significant. Furthermore, the results of the study indicate that parental involvement does not significantly mediate influence of leadership and school climate of the student academic achievement. As for the moderation analysis, the results of the study indicate that parental involvement positively and significantly moderate on to the influence of school climate and transformational leadership than transactional leadership on the student academic achievement. Previous studies in this domain are still in the developmental phase since not all studies were found to hae [sic] a moderating influence of parental involvement on transformational leadership and school organizational climate on the academic achievements of students. Therefore, the findings of this study hint at a significant scope for future researches in this domain. Overall, the study does point out that transactional leadership, transformational leadership and school climate than parental involvement directly influences student academic achievements. However, the parental involvement was found to moderate rather than mediate on the influence of transformational leadership and school organizational climate on students' academic achievement. The results of the study were discussed under the light of the past researches in the field. This study advances theory and practice on student academic achievement. The findings of this study have key policy implications and they have been discussed in details. This study discusses limitations and future direction for research in the context of student academic achievement in the public schools in Emirates of Abu Dhabi in particular, and the Gulf Coordination Council (GCC) in general.
