Book excerpt: This dissertation describes an intelligent, computer-aided instructional (ICAI) program, named GUIDON, with capabilities to carry on a structured case method dialogue, generate teaching material from production rules, construct and verify a model of what the student knows, and explain expert reasoning. The principle objective of this research has been to convert MYCIN, a knowledge-based consultation program, into an effective instructional tool. GUIDON combines the subject matter knowledge of the consultation system with tutorial discourse knowledge, while keeping the two distinct. MYCIN-like knowledge-based consultation programs are designed to provide expert-level advice about difficult scientific and medical problems. High performance is attained by interpreting a large, specialized set of facts and domain relations that take the form of rules about what to do in a given circumstance. Such a rule base is generally built by interviewing human experts to formulate the knowledge that they use to solve similar problems in their area of expertise. While it is generally believed that these programs have significant educational potential, little work has been done to evaluate the problems of realizing this potential.

It has become evident that flexible user-oriented dialog behavior of such systems can be achieved only if the system has access to a model of the user containing assumptions about his/her background knowledge as well as his/her goals and plans in consulting the system. Research in the field of user models investigates how such assumptions can be automatically created, represented and exploited by the system in the course of an "on-line" interaction with the user. The communication medium in this interaction need not necessarily be a natural language, such as English or German. Formal interaction languages are also permit ted. The emphasis is placed on systems with natural language input and output, however. A dozen major and several more minor user modeling systems have been de signed and implemented in the last decade, mostly in the context of natural-language dialog systems. The goal of UM86, the first international workshop on user model ing, was to bring together the researchers working on these projects so that results could be discussed and analyzed, and hopefully general insights be found, that could prove useful for future research. The meeting took place in Maria Laach, a small village some 40 miles south of Bonn, West Germany. 25 prominent researchers were invited to participate.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Mathematics Education and Technology was held in Villard-de-Lans, France, between May 6 and 11, 1993. Organised on the initiative of the BaCoMET (Basic Components of Mathematics Education for Teachers) group (Christiansen, Howson and Otte 1986; Bishop, Mellin-Olsen and van Dormolen 1991), the workshop formed part of a larger NATO programme on Advanced Educational Technology. Some workshop members had already participated in earlier events in this series and were able to contribute insights from them: similarly some members were to take part in later events. The problematic for the workshop drew attention to important speculative developments in the applications of advanced information technology in mathematics education over the last decade, notably intelligent tutoring, geometric construction, symbolic algebra and statistical analysis. Over the same period, more elementary forms of information technology had started to have a significant influence on teaching approaches and curriculum content: notably arithmetic and graphic calculators; standard computer tools, such as spreadsheets and databases; and computer-assisted learning packages and computer microworlds specially designed for educational purposes.
