Book excerpt: Offering a thorough explanation of electrode kinetics, this textbook emphasizes physical phenomena - rather than mathematical formalism - and elucidates the underlying principles of the different experimental techniques. Assuming an elementary knowledge of thermodynamics and chemical kinetics and minimal mathematical skills, coverage explores the arguments of two primary schools of thought: electrode kinetics and interfacial electrochemistry viewed as a branch of physical chemistry and from the perspective of analytical chemistry.

Book excerpt: Electrochemical Kinetics: Theoretical Aspects focuses on the processes, methodologies, reactions, and transformations in electrochemical kinetics. The book first offers information on electrochemical thermodynamics and the theory of overvoltage. Topics include equilibrium potentials, concepts and definitions, electrical double layer and electrocapillarity, and charge-transfer, diffusion, and reaction overvoltage. Crystallization overvoltage, total overvoltage, and resistance polarization are also discussed. The text then examines the methods of determining electrochemical reaction mechanisms, including examination of the overall electrode reaction and determination of the type of overvoltage and reaction kinetics. A list of frequently used symbols is also provided. The book is a valuable reference for readers interested in the study of electrochemical kinetics.

Book excerpt: Electrochemistry plays a key role in a broad range of research and applied areas including the exploration of new inorganic and organic compounds, biochemical and biological systems, corrosion, energy applications involving fuel cells and solar cells, and nanoscale investigations. The Handbook of Electrochemistry serves as a source of electrochemical information, providing details of experimental considerations, representative calculations, and illustrations of the possibilities available in electrochemical experimentation. The book is divided into five parts: Fundamentals, Laboratory Practical, Techniques, Applications, and Data. The first section covers the fundamentals of electrochemistry which are essential for everyone working in the field, presenting an overview of electrochemical conventions, terminology, fundamental equations, and electrochemical cells, experiments, literature, textbooks, and specialized books. Part 2 focuses on the different laboratory aspects of electrochemistry which is followed by a review of the various electrochemical techniques ranging from classical experiments to scanning electrochemical microscopy, electrogenerated chemiluminesence and spectroelectrochemistry. Applications of electrochemistry include electrode kinetic determinations, unique aspects of metal deposition, and electrochemistry in small places and at novel interfaces and these are detailed in Part 4. The remaining three chapters provide useful electrochemical data and information involving electrode potentials, diffusion coefficients, and methods used in measuring liquid junction potentials. * serves as a source of electrochemical information * includes useful electrochemical data and information involving electrode potentials, diffusion coefficients, and methods used in measuring liquid junction potentials * reviews electrochemical techniques (incl. scanning electrochemical microscopy, electrogenerated chemiluminesence and spectroelectrochemistry)

Book excerpt: The mechanism of an elementary act is undoubtedly one of the most fundamental problems of chemical and, in particular, electro chemical kinetics. Although this problem has fascinated scientists for quite a long time, it was only in the late fifties and early sixties that it began to be actively investigated for charge transfer reactions. Owing to the development of new methods in the analysis of this problem, significant advancements were made in theoretical as well as experimental studies. These investigations showed that the physical mechanism of charge transfer in all processes including heterogeneous electrochemical and homogeneous chemical and bio chemical processes is basically the same. Hence, the results ob tained in the field of electrochemical kinetics are relevant to the understanding of homogeneous chemical reactions as well. This book endeavors to summarize the results of investigations carried out during the last two decades. It is based on the author's monograph "Electrode Reactions: The Mechanism of an Elementary Act" (Nauka, 1979). As compared to the first version, the book has been considerably revised and enlarged not only to include a large body of data published between 1978 and 1982, but also to analyze in detail the links between electrochemical and homogeneous, in particular enzymatic, kinetics. As a result, a new chapter has been added to the book. The change in the title reflects the fact that the material contained in the book is not restricted to an investigation of purely electrochemical problems.

They provide a comprehensive review of the study of electrode kinetics. The basic ideas and experimental methodology are presented in Volume 26 whilst Volume 27 deals with reactions at particular types of electrodes.Chapter 1 serves as an introduction to both volumes and is a survey of the fundamental principles of electrode kinetics. Chapter 2 deals with mass transport - how material gets to and from an electrode. Chapter 3 provides a review of linear sweep and cyclic voltammetry which constitutes an extensively used experimental technique in the field. Chapter 4 discusses a.c. and pulse methods which are a rich source of electrochemical information. Finally, chapter 5 discusses the use of electrodes in which there is forced convection, the so-called ``hydrodynamic electrodes''.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processes that take place at a phase boundary connected with the transfer of electric charge - the electrode processes - are of great importance in many aspects of everyday life. Nevertheless, the elaboration of theories concerning these processes started only in the 1930s. In particular, results obtained during the last two decades have made it possible to survey the general theoretical fundamentals of electrode processes and to elucidate the reaction mechanisms of several important electrode processes. The main aim of the present work is to describe the most significant kinetic characteristics of an important group of electrode processes - the electrochemical dissolution of metals (anodic and spontaneous dissolution). An overview is given on the kinetics of the complex processes taking place in consecutive and parallel reaction paths. In this respect the book fills a gap, as it is the first time that a work relevant to the stepwise mechanism of electrode processes has been published. The value of the work is enhanced by the inclusion of the author's own results, which are assessed together with those of other research workers.
