May 21, 22 and 23, 1901 It is argued against the County Society that petty jealousies and disagreements of local competitors are sure, sooner or later, to arise and make the maintenance of the Society impossible. Doubtless, this would be true in many instances, but even should the County Society disband for such cause, membership in the State Society might be retained, and in all instances these unfortunate conditions would not arise. With a well organized, active Society, the enforcement of the law would not be so difficult, and the tendency would be to increase both the membership and the attendance at the annual meeting. As a further means of adding to the interest of the annual meetings, it is suggested that more time be given to scientific discussion and less to routine business. As part of this program, it is recommended that each chairman of Section and the leader of debate be required to signify his willingness to perform the duties, and to assure him that the appointment is not intended as an idle compliment, but that the scientific work and interest of the meeting will depend upon his efforts. If he is unwilling to give such assurance, then some one else should be appointed. It might be well, also to select some distinguished member of the profession from abroad to address each meeting on a subject of general interest. A profession like yours, which in the complimentary and just language of another, "has almost annihilated distance, baffled pain, multiplied every convenience of life, and covered the civilized world with traces of triumphant skill," is surely too potent an instrumentality in illustrating the glory of God, to be regarded with any such timid apprehensions. The simple yet solemn ceremony by which we have just ushered in the beginning of your labors, have launched your deliberations on the wings of prayer to Him "whom by searching we may not find out," is a recognition by you of the important truth, that the science to which you have consecrated yourselves is the ready handmaid of the religion of the spirit. So, let all good people, all true seekers after light and knowledge, bid you press on in their gigantic strides of discovery which have signally characterized your progress in the present age; and let the timid laggard who accepts "Atheism as the creed of science" be overtaken by the humiliation of being excluded from the feast of the soul, which truth is spreading for us. Therefore we greet your coming together and accord to you the foremost rank in the pursuit of truth in the natural world, and commend with propriety, I conceive, the Divine injunction "to forsake not the assembling of yourselves together." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Annual Meeting of the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina, 1886 The reporter of the Transactions failed to make proper notice of the remarks of Dr. Cheatham in the discussion ensuing upon the reading of the essay. Dr. Cheatham alluded at length to the late investigations of Debove and Millard, describing the methods of forced feeding, gavage, and the initial proceeding to this form of artificial alimention, the preparation of the stomach by rinsing it out. He then recited an interesting history of a case of sophogeal stricture which after being under the care of other distinguished surgeons and physicians, had come to him for relief. He was enabled to prolong the life of his patient for six or seven months by the careful and skilful administration of food by the rectum. The article on Terebinthenates, by Dr. Thomas F. Wood, has not been finished. The continued illness of this gentleman has forced him to give up the investigation of which the paper was to be the record. The reader will notice the absence of Dr. Young's Essay. The original which was handed to the Secretary for the Publication Committee, was returned to the author at his request, for some correction, but never reached him. Diligent search was made for it by the postmaster at Wilmington, where it was mailed, without avail, and Dr. Young was unable to procure a copy to replace the lost one. This is much to be regretted, for its reception by the Society was a most flattering one, and its absence from this volume of the Transactions will detract seriously from its value. That record is known and read of all men. The pathetic language of the original appeal to the medical men of North Carolina portrayed the dangers which threatened and the difficulties which surrounded the profession, and which changed your influence and exertions, have been long since happily removed. Even to speak only of those whose labors have been closed by the Great Sealer of lips, shows how rich is the history of this Society in names worthy of lasting renown. Year after year they mingled their common offering with yours at the shrine of humanity, the end and aim of all medical effort. Freely they gave of their knowledge to their younger brethren, and when war lowered upon us, they gave to the soldiers their tenderest care. Speedily the day come when it was freely acknowledged that the citizen soldier of no other Southern State received such attention to their sick and wounded, and such supervision of their means to ward off disease and death, as the troops of North Carolina. A public debt of gratitude is due alike to great numbers of your Society, both deceased and living. The names of the former I need not repeat, for they are embalmed in memory. Of the claims of the latter I cannot speak as they deserve, for they hear me. There is one other event in the history of your Society which deserves signal recognition by the people, because its blessings are not temporary but lasting, and rest not upon a few, but extend to all who value the aid of skill and experience in the hour of peril. It is to you that the people are indebted for the act passed in 1858 requiring examinations of those who propose to serve as practitioners of medicine within our borders.
