Book Synopsis Beside the Seaside by : John Heywood
Download or read book Beside the Seaside written by John Heywood and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining, illustrated history of over 4 centuries of life among the seaside resorts along the Yorkshire coast. Almost all of us have happy memories of excursions and holidays spent beside the sea. For many, these include the Yorkshire coast which runs unbroken for more than one hundred miles between the two great rivers, the Tees and the Humber. Within those boundaries are the popular seaside resorts of Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington as well as numerous smaller and quieter but equally well-loved destinations. How did the love affair with the area start and how did it develop? Over the years, all the ingredients for the perfect holiday are there—the spas, the sea and sun bathing, board and lodgings, entertainment and just as importantly, the journeys there and back. Beside the Seaside takes a detailed but entertaining look back at the history of these resorts over the last four hundred years and asks, “What does the future hold?” Packed with information, this book is fully illustrated with photographs, old and new, together with paintings and etchings. Coupled with the thoughts and memories of tourists and travellers from the 17th century through to the present time, it gives a fascinating insight into how our ancestors would have spent their time at the coast. Evocative and intriguing, absorbing and surprising, John Heywood’s book will appeal both to those familiar with the area and to others who just enjoy being “Beside the Seaside”. Praise for Beside the Seaside “While the author delights the reader with some splendidly nostalgic content—with illustrations to match—there’s also some reflection on the changing times, a current renaissance and future possibilities. A good book to take with you on your hols.” —Best of British, July 2018, Book of the Month “A brief but fascinating history of the popular seaside resorts of God’s own country.” —Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine “John’s fabulous book examines people’s fascination with and love of seaside resorts in Yorkshire, and the evocative photographs and excellent text make this one of the finest advertisements for such resorts to have ever been published. Brilliant!”—Books Monthly

Book Synopsis Power and Politics at the Colonial Seaside by : Shuk-Wah Poon
Download or read book Power and Politics at the Colonial Seaside written by Shuk-Wah Poon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the complex role of the seaside as a leisure space in colonial Hong Kong. British sports were in many respects more meaningful in the empire than literature, music, art, or religion. They served as an instrument of cultural association and later of cultural change, promoting imperial union and then postimperial goodwill. Poon analyses the ways in which British colonists and Chinese leaders, backed by the rhetoric of public health and nationalism, respectively, transformed the Hong Kong seaside into a leisure space. She argues that the growing popularity of seaside resorts and sea bathing as a preferred form of leisure activity across the social and ethnic spectrums served an important role in shaping the racial relationship between Westerners and the Chinese population, as well as the Chinese people’s perception of the female body and the seaside, during the colonial period. The popularity of British leisure forms in colonial Hong Kong does not necessarily mean the triumph of “Britishness.” This book will be of great interest to historians with an interest in leisure and in Empire and Colonialism, as well as historians of Colonial Hong Kong and Modern China.

Each year millions of visitors come to walk on its three piers, ride donkeys, enjoy shows at the Winter Gardens, scream on the thrilling rides at the Pleasure Beach and ride the lift to the top of the Tower. Generations of holidaymakers have stayed in its hotels, lodging houses and bed and breakfasts and all have succumbed to its delectable fish and chips. Two centuries of tourism has left behind a rich heritage, but Blackpool has also inherited a legacy of social and economic problems, as well as the need for comprehensive new sea defences to protect the heart of the town. In recent years this has led to the transformation of its seafront and to regeneration programmes to try to improve the town, for its visitors and residents. This book celebrates Blackpool's rich heritage and examines how its colourful past is playing a key part in guaranteeing that it has a bright future.
