Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traitement Chirurgical De L'otite Moyenne Chronique Seche Par L'evidement Petro-Mastoidien Avec Et Sans Tubage The morbid changes which occur in the cavity of the Tympanum, thickening of the mucous membrane, new formation of connective tissue, membranous bands fixing the ossicles, all these spread into the Mastoid cells where they induce thickening and rigidity of the mucous membrane and more or less complete hyperostosis of the subjacent tissue. The transmission to the Labyrinth of the sound-waves travelling by the Membrana tympani is effected partly through the chain of ossicles, partly through the air. We can easily understand that alterations which more or less diminish the mobility of the organs charged with the transmission of sound, and which at the same time involve the Antrum and its entrance, by reducing their dimensions, must cause a marked lessening of the power of hearing.
