Book Synopsis Horse Pasture Management by : Paul H. Sharpe
Download or read book Horse Pasture Management written by Paul H. Sharpe and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horse Pasture Management begins with coverage of the structure, function and nutritional value of plants, continuing into identification of pasture plants. Management of soil and plants in a pasture is covered next, followed by horse grazing behavior, feed choices of horses, management of grazing horses, and how to calculate how many horses should be grazing relative to land size. Management of hay and silage are included, since year-round grazing is not possible on many horse farms. A number of chapters deal with interactions of a horse farm with the environment and other living things. As an aid in good pasture management, one chapter explains construction and use of fencing and watering systems. Contributions are rounded out with a chapter explaining how the University of Kentucky helps horse farm managers develop their pasture management programs. The purpose of the book is to help people provide a better life for horses Provides the basic principles of pasture management for those involved in equine-related fields and study Covers a variety of strategies for managing the behavior, grouping, environmental, and feeding needs of grazing horses to ensure high levels of welfare and health Includes information on environmental best practices, plant and soil assessment, and wildlife concerns Explains pasture-related diseases and toxic plants to be avoided Includes links to useful resources and existing extension programs
Book Synopsis Managing Pasture by : Dale Strickler
Download or read book Managing Pasture written by Dale Strickler and published by Storey Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The health and profitability of grass-based livestock begins with the food they eat. In Managing Pasture, author Dale Strickler guides farmers and ranchers through the practical and ideological considerations behind caring for the land as a key part of running a successful grass-based operation, from the profitability of replacing expensive grain feed with nutrient-rich native grasses to the benefits of ecologically-minded land management. In-depth examinations of the biology and benefits of grazing plants and different grazing strategies accompany detailed plans for paddock and fencing set-ups, livestock watering, and effective methods for dealing with common pasture problems throughout the seasons, from mud to drought. For readers invested in pasture improvement strategies that offer environmental benefits beyond better meat and dairy, including carbon sequestration, erosion prevention, increased pollinator resources and wildlife habitat, and improved water quality, Managing Pasture is an approachable, accessible guide to creating and caring for the grassland that feeds animals and future generations.
Book Synopsis The Cow and Her Grass: Rational Grazing - A Manual of Grass Productivity by : Andre Voisin
Download or read book The Cow and Her Grass: Rational Grazing - A Manual of Grass Productivity written by Andre Voisin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Messrs Voisin and Lecomte comes at the right moment. It is a synthesis of M. Voisin's important study, Grass Productivity. This manual presents the chief ideas of two specialists. Since they are also excellent practitioners, they have applied these ideas before recommending them. Their evocative picture of 'the meeting of cow and grass' poses the true problem of the management of grazed grass. For the farmer, the production of meat and milk is an act of industrial conversion. The 'machine' is the animal that converts raw vegetable matter into finished food products which are rich in calories and easy to assimilate. This 'machine' is complex because it is a living being; it can be improved--within limits. But its yield depends basically on the quality of the raw materials offered to it for conversion. I hope that their words will be heard and followed. [From the Introduction]

Book Synopsis Planned Grazing by : Jimmy T. (Gunny) Labaume
Download or read book Planned Grazing written by Jimmy T. (Gunny) Labaume and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Editor: I first attended Alan Savory and Stan Parson's “Rancher School” in Albuquerque, NM in the early 1980s. Since that time, and throughout my academic career, I have advocated, taught and practiced the principles of the “Savory Grazing Method (or SGM)” as it was called in those days. Only a short time after I completed the school, Alan and Stan decided to dissolve their partnership and go their separate ways. Alan founded Holistic Management International and Stan the Ranching for Profit School. SGM (now Holistic Management) is a “method” and "methods" cannot be patented. As a result, the names the principles are presented under have proliferated. Although the fundamental ecological principles have not changed since those early days, we now have managed grazing, planned grazing, mob grazing, management intensive grazing, and perhaps a half-dozen others. (In fact, for some small degree of distinction, we choose to call what we do “Managing the Ranch as a Business with Restoration Grazing.”) Never-the-less, to this day I still find myself referring to it as “The Savory Grazing Method” in honor of the brilliant man from whose mind these ideas sprung. This guide is a detailed book review of sorts, but perhaps it would be more accurately described as an abstract that condenses 864 pages of detail into 189 pages of concentrated information. First, "Holistic Management: A New Framework for Decision Making" by Alan Savory with Jody Butterfield and "Holistic Management Handbook: Healthy Land, Healthy Profits by Jody Butterfield, Sam Bingam and Allan Savory" were condensed and summarized. Then, the summaries were complied into one with the result being organized into a logical sequence. In no way is it intended to be a substitute for the original works. They are both highly recommended and readily available from Land & Livestock International, Inc., Holistic Management International, Amazon.com and many other sources. Suggested uses might include:• lesson plan guidelines for educators• a study guide for students and • a field guide and quick reference manual for practitioners The material is organized into nine “Lessons:” Lesson 1: IntroductionLesson 2: The Strategic GoalLesson 3: The Four Fundamental Ecosystem ProcessesLesson 4: Tools for Ecosystem ManagementLesson 5: Management GuidelinesLesson 6: Infrastructure PlanningLesson 7: Grazing PlanningLesson 8: Financial PlanningLesson 9: Monitoring and ControlIn sum: the primary objective was to capture the essence of the two works in as few words as possible and in a language understandable by the reasonably intelligent person without formal education in natural resource or business management. My hope is to make these logical, common sense ideas available to a wider audience and, thereby, make a small contribution to the conservation of the world's natural resources. If I have succeeded, that would be my only small claim to originality because the ideas are from the minds and the pens of Allan Savory, Jody Butterfield and Sam Bingham. The errors are mine.
