Book excerpt: Charting the recent changes to the education system in South Africa, this text looks particularly at the effect of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Underpinning the NQF is the move from a content-based to an outcome-based education and training (OBET) system, which includes the key concept of continual assessment. This text aims to bring clarity and certainty to this complex and confusing situation, addressing teacher worries such as the lack of consultation in establishing the NQF and the seeming absence of in-service training. By focusing on outcomes-based education, this book attempts to demystify continuous assessment, providing guidelines to plan, carry out, report and manage assessment in an outcome-based education and training system. The text is written specifically for teachers, encouraging them to view changes in curricula and assessment procedures as exciting challenges.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the major outcomes of the third edition of the Future of Higher Education – Bologna Process Researchers Conference (FOHE-BPRC 3) which was held on 27-29 November 2017. It acknowledges the importance of a continued dialogue between researchers and decision-makers and benefits from the experience already acquired, this way enabling the higher education community to bring its input into the 2018-2020 European Higher Education Area (EHEA) priorities. The Future of Higher Education – Bologna Process Researchers Conference (FOHE-BPRC) has already established itself as a landmark in the European higher education environment. The two previous editions (17-19 October 2011, 24-26 November 2014), with approximately 200 European and international participants each, covering more than 50 countries each, were organized prior to the Ministerial Conferences, thus encouraging a consistent dialogue between researchers and policy makers. The main conclusions of the FOHE Conferences were presented at the EHEA Ministerial Conferences (2012 and 2015), in order to make the voice of researchers better heard by European policy and decision makers. This volume is dedicated to continuing the collection of evidence and research-based policymaking and further narrowing the gap between policy and research within the EHEA and broader global contexts. It aims to identify the research areas that require more attention prior to the anniversary 2020 EHEA Ministerial Conference, with an emphasis on the new issues on rise in the academic and educational community. This book gives a platform for discussion on key issues between researchers, various direct higher education actors, decision-makers, and the wider public. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the impact and implementation of national qualifications frameworks in sixteen different countries. It presents two major lessons for policy makers thinking of introducing a National Qualifications Framework (NQF). First, that an NQF is only a way of framing existing provision; it cannot on its own, lead to the acquisition of skills or knowledge. Second, as an attempt to standardize learning- something that is only to a limited extent standardizable, NQFs have disadvantages as well as advantages. The research was funded by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the European Training Foundation (ETF) and, partly as a result of the ILO/ETF Report, the Editors were asked by the World Bank to help them in advising the government of India on introducing a NQF for vocational qualifications. Building on the findings of the report, the editors of this book presented an NQF implementation strategy to the Government of India on behalf of the World Bank. It laid out the steps and stages that would be involved and took account of the earlier experiences of introducing an NQF. Although this strategy was prepared specifically for the Government of India, others who have read it felt it deserved wider circulation. The report has therefore been included in this volume. Since this research was undertaken, the number countries, especially developing countries, implementing or introducing a NQF has continued to increase. This book will be of interest to policy makers and researchers. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Education and Work.

Book excerpt: Over the years, the education sector has witnessed substantial transformations and developments, driven primarily by the rapid growth of technology and inventive pedagogical approaches. In the MENA region, these changes have been particularly noteworthy, as educational institutions are striving to keep pace with global advancements while addressing unique regional challenges. Set against this context, this book delves into two pivotal dimensions that have surfaced as vital for thriving in today's educational sphere, with a strong emphasis on the MENA region's distinct characteristics and opportunities. The first dimension explores the evolution and challenges in governance, encompassing the organizational frameworks, decision-making mechanisms, and policies that empower educational institutions in the MENA region to adapt to the shifting environment. The second dimension zeroes in on the metamorphosis of education itself, emphasizing the innovative tools, assignments, and methodologies that are accessible to educators in the region, and discussing the balance between these elements and effective university governance. By offering an exhaustive and up-to-date examination of these two dimensions, this book imparts invaluable insights and pragmatic guidance to educational professionals, policymakers, and students alike, all with a focus on the MENA region. It aims to equip readers with the knowledge and abilities required to successfully navigate the new educational landscape and excel in the world of academia while highlighting the unique potential and prospects of the region's educational institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the changes taking place within graduate education in the Asia Pacific Region. A collection of essays by distinguished scholars from eight Asia Pacific nations links profound changes occurring in the economies and societies of the region to the many changes taking place within higher education. Focusing on how the dynamics of a changing global economy are affecting the ways higher education institutions are responding, particular changes are seen to be taking place in graduate education as many societies experience the need to produce graduates of high quality with elevated qualifications. Such changes are not without challenge or difficulty as issues of finance. Questions of appropriate directions of innovation and overall higher education capacity continue to frame the broader issue of the changing nature of graduate education.
