Book excerpt: The digital age has had a profound effect on our cultural heritage and the academic research that studies it. Staggering amounts of objects, many of them of a textual nature, are being digitised to make them more readily accessible to both experts and laypersons. Besides a vast potential for more effective and efficient preservation, management, and presentation, digitisation offers opportunities to work with cultural heritage data in ways that were never feasible or even imagined. To explore and exploit these possibilities, an interdisciplinary approach is needed, bringing together experts from cultural heritage, the social sciences and humanities on the one hand, and information technology on the other. Due to a prevalence of textual data in these domains, language technology has a crucial role to play in this endeavour. Language technology can break through the "Google barrier" by offering the potential to analyse texts at advanced levels, extracting information and knowledge at the level of the humanities or social sciences researcher, who wants to know about the who, what, where, and when, but also the how and the why. At the same time cultural heritage data poses considerable challenges for existing language technology: technology aimed at "generic" language has to face such disparate problems as historical language variation, OCR digitisation errors, and near-extinct academic expertise. This book is primarily intended for researchers in information technology and language processing who would like to receive a state-of-the-art overview of the whole breadth of the new and vibrant field of language technology for cultural heritage and its associated academic research in the humanities and social sciences. Researchers working in the target domains of cultural heritage, the social sciences and humanities will also find this book useful, as it provides an overview of how language technology can help them with their information needs. The book covers applications ranging from pre-processing and data cleaning, to the adaptation and compilation of linguistic resources, to personalisation, narrative analysis, visualisation and retrieval.

Book excerpt: This beautiful term, “through a glass darkly” is found in the Old King James Bible and it is referring to looking into a poor quality mirror getting some distortion in your reflection or as the Darby translation puts it, “through a dim window obscurely”. The “glass darkly” effect of seeing the truth of the Bible only in part is caused by the lapse of time, the history of the Church, non-Spirit led people, a denominational accommodating theology to justify a particular stance and our fallibility as humans. In many cases these factors have caused us at times to be unfaithful to His Word. Some may read this book and say I am a literalist or purist but before you judge me please consider God’s Word when it says in Ephesians 4:5, “one Lord, one faith, one baptism”, which could be a catch-cry for unity in the Body of Christ the Church, but sadly many differ in what even this statement means. A rhetorical question, “Who can say they are 100% correct in their perspective of understanding Scripture?” Here is the challenge; could we make a statement of faith based on Ephesians 4:5 that will bring unity? And if most of us are honest we will say, “I am right and if you adopt what I say then everything will be fine”. Of course this position is unworkable when viewing an attempt of unity. A synergistic understanding of the Bible requires a three point perspective. One, the Bible is God’s Word. Two, the Bible is settled whether I understand it or even believe it. Three, I am blessed if I believe it and follow its direction for my life. While reading this book please consider that God has placed in creation and in His Word a synergy when adhered to will bring a unity.

The content of this book is aimed at arriving at a place where a church groups will be in one accord when operating in the field of Evangelism. But this field of study can lend itself to unlimited areas of concern in our collective church family. The aim of this study is to look at how a group of people coming together in pray can be effective in making supplication and requests to God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book you hold in your hands is an ambitious attempt to draw a contrast between the simplicity and certainty of the gospel and the complexity and obscurity of secular philosophies. Some readers may find the sections on philosophy difficult, especially if they have no prior knowledge of the various schools of philosophy. Yet Ian Traill has given a succinct outline of each brand of philosophy, and recourse, say, to the online Wikipedia, will enable any reader to clarify what may at first seem obscure. The apostle Paul boldly declares that philosophers are unable to find God through their arguing because God himself has decreed their failure! (1 Cor 1:19-20) That is why even the most brilliant minds have been unable to penetrate the truth by thought alone. It is why, as the 19th century English jurist, Lord Charles Bowen, once said, philosophers are “like a blind man in a dark room feeling for a black hat – that isn’t there!” But he was preceded, fifty years before Jesus was born, by the Roman orator Cicero: “There is nothing so ridiculous but some philosopher has said it.” Likewise, the intellectual 20th century philosopher and mathematician, Lord Bertrand Russell, talking about the seeming certainties of mathematics, had to confess that “mathematics may be defined as the subject in which we never know what we are talking about, nor whether what we are saying is true.” Human philosophy, despite its fascination and genius, must be included with those uncertainties. In the end, absolute truth rests only in the glorious gospel of Christ. Ian’s book offers a fine explanation of this marvellous reality. I believe we need to make a paradigm shift, so that we can remove or readjust to a more contemporary understanding of theology. We should examine the assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that have influenced the history of theology in the Church and go through a period of Biblical pursuit, to find out what Scripture truly says.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring many aspects of Felix Mendelssohn's multi-faceted career as musician and how it intersects with his work as composer, contributors discuss practical issues of music making such as performance space, instruments, tempo markings, dynamics, phrasings, articulations, fingerings, and instrument techniques. They present the conceptual and ideological underpinnings of Mendelssohn's approach to performance, interpretation, and composing through the contextualization of specific performance events and through the theoretic actualization of performances of specific works. Contributors rely on manuscripts, marked or edited scores, and performance parts to convey a deeper understanding of musical expression in 19th-century Germany. This study of Mendelssohn's work as conductor, pianist, organist, violist, accompanist, music director, and editor of old and new music offers valuable perspectives on 19th-century performance practice issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instant New York Times bestseller! The Emmy Award-winning star of General Hospital chronicles his astonishing and emotional life journey in this powerful memoir—an inspiring story of success, show business, and family, and his struggle with mental illness. "This shocking true story is General Hospital on anabolic steroids." — Mehmet Oz, M.D., Emmy Award-winning host of The Dr. Oz Show Maurice Benard has been blessed with family, fame, and a successful career. For twenty-five years, he has played one of the most well-known characters on daytime television: General Hospital’s Michael “Sonny” Corinthos, Jr. In his life outside the screen, he is a loving husband and the father of four. But his path has not been without hardship. When he was only twenty, Maurice was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In Nothing General About It, Maurice looks back to his youth in a small town and his tenuous relationship with his father. He describes how his bipolar disorder began to surface in childhood, how he struggled to understand the jolting mood swings he experienced, and how a doctor finally saved his life. For years Maurice was relentless in his goal to be a successful actor. But even after he “made it,” he still grappled with terrifying lows, breakdowns, and setbacks, all while trying desperately to maintain his relationship with his wife, who endured his violent, unpredictable episodes. Maurice holds nothing back as he bravely talks about what it was like to be medicated and institutionalized, and of how he learned to manage his manic episodes while on the set of GH. Nothing General About It is also an incredible love story about an enduring marriage that demonstrates what those vows—for better, for worse, in sickness and in health—truly mean. Maurice also pays tribute to the community that has been there for him through thick and thin, and ruminates on the importance of both inherited and created family. A shocking, riveting, and utterly candid memoir of love, adversity, and ultimately hope, Nothing General About It offers insights and advice for everyone trying to cope with mental illness, and is a motivational story that offers lessons in perseverance—of the importance of believing in and fighting for yourself through the darkest times. Nothing General About It includes a 16-page insert featuring approximately 50 photographs.
