Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation management centers (TMCs), or traffic management centers, have become a vital part of the transportation fabric in many urban areas. This synthesis presents information on the current operational and technical practices used by highway, transit, and multimodal TMCs in several urbanized areas. It will be of interest to transportation system administrators, traffic engineers, maintenance engineers, and other officials in state departments of transportation, as well as those responsible for local transportation management and control. In addition, this synthesis will be useful to state and local law enforcement and emergency response personnel. It also provides information to developers and suppliers of hardware and software for traffic control technology and communications systems. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the various types of TMCs, their functions, and details of design, operations, and staffing. It describes the practice of agencies in the United States and Canada, based on survey responses from 147 TMCs. These agencies are responsible for highways, surface streets, bridges and tunnels, transit, including bus and rail, and several integrated TMCs that include more than one mode. Design criteria describe in detail the physical facility design of TMCs, as well as the software configurations and the interrelationships among TMCs of various types. The required staffing and the personnel roles are highlighted. To the extent that data are available, ranges of costs and benefits for TMCs are included in the report.

Book excerpt: Intelligent Transportation Systems: Functional Design for Economical and Efficient Traffic Management provides practical guidance on the efficient use of resources in the design of ITS. The author explains how functional design alternatives can meet project objectives and requirements with optimal cost effectiveness and clarifies how transportation planning and traffic diversion principles relate to functional ITS device selections and equipment locations. Methodologies for translating objectives to functional device types, determining device deployment densities and determining the best placement of CCTV cameras and message signs are provided, as are models for evaluating the benefits of design alternatives based on traffic conditions. Readers will learn how to reduce recurrent congestion, improve incident clearance time in non-recurrent congestion, provide real-time incident information to motorists, and leverage transportation management center data for lane control through important new active transportation and demand management (ATDM) methods. Finally, the author examines exciting developments in connected vehicle technologies, exploring their potential to greatly improve safety, mobility and energy efficiency. This resource will greatly benefit all ITS designers and managers and is of pivotal importance for operating agencies performing evaluations to justify operational funding and system expansions.

Book excerpt: By having the ability to acquire better traffic data, each agency has information that is more valuable to itself, to the public, and potentially to private enterprise than similar information of just a few years ago. However, several procedural and institutional questions arise when an agency contemplates undertaking the acquisition and dissemination of traffic information. To determine how other agencies have answered these questions and to provide a reference to assist in developing policy and procedures, this research project synthesized the state-of-the-practice of traffic information dissemination within the United States by conducting a survey of some of the agencies that are operating traffic management centers and disseminating traffic information. This project also synthesizes the findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Traffic Management Centers (TMCs) in Texas play a vital role in managing traffic operations in many of major metropolitan areas. TMCs have deployed extensive detection, monitoring, and communication infrastructure to allow TxDOT operators to manage incidents and reduce collisions; provide traveler information through roadside assets; provide traffic status to broadcast media; and support work zone monitoring and construction information. Currently there is no cross-border TMC or traveler data exchange along the Texas/Mexico border to inform the traveling public of the traffic conditions on the other side of the border, so travelers do not have information on traveling conditions between border sister-cities. Researchers evaluated the current state of the practice and future plans in Mexico to advance intelligent transportation systems, and developed a framework and an action plan for TxDOT to lead the deployment of cross-border TMCs and share data to improve the traffic conditions along the Texas/Mexico border and adjacent border cities
