China is reawakening to the power and importance of its own culture. This volume provides a unique view of the emerging Confucian vision for China and the world in the 21st century. Unlike the Neo-Confucians sojourning in North America who recast Confucianism in terms of modern Western values, this new generation of Chinese scholars takes the authentic roots of Confucian thought seriously. This collection of essays offers the first critical exploration in English of the emerging Confucian, non-liberal, non-social-democratic, moral and political vision for China’s future. Inspired by the life and scholarship of Jiang Qing who has emerged as China's exemplar contemporary Confucian, this volume allows the English reader access to a moral and cultural vision that seeks to direct China’s political power, social governance, and moral life. For those working in Chinese studies, this collection provides the first access in English to major debates in China concerning a Confucian reconceptualization of governance, a critical Confucian assessment of feminism, Confucianism functioning again as a religion, and the possibility of a moral vision that can fill the cultural vacuum created by the collapse of Marxism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first edited collection to critically address in its entirety questions related to the displaying of Chinese contemporary art. It includes chapters by scholars and cultural workers from diverse backgrounds involved in the interpretation of artistic as well as curatorial discourses and practices. Each of those chapters gives a detailed account of a particular, socio-culturally informed, approach to the making and showing of Chinese art - including in relation to queer identities, transculturality, the use of social media, artivism, social engagement, institutional critique, and neo-Confucian aesthetics. Together they present a vital intervention with established curatorship amidst the intensely interconnected and increasingly multi-polar cultural conditionalities of early 21st-century contemporaneity.

Book excerpt: As the preparatory work for the establishment of the Huang Zhuan Archive, this paper critically sorts, narrates and reflects on the arduous life and career of Chinese art critic Huang Zhuan, a pioneer and practitioner who has significantly influenced the development of Chinese contemporary art. With the help of many third-party materials, mainly oral history, this paper first chronologically presents Huang Zhuan's 58-year life starting from ancient Chinese history study, gradually turning to contemporary art research, and then to his hasty death when the effect of his practice was finally revealing. In every stage of his career, Huang Zhuan was facing different barriers and carrying different missions in different times and places. And also at every stage of his short life, Huang Zhuan tried hard with his constantly perfected ontology and methodology, which were strongly influenced by the Warburg School, to address a group of social and artistic issues that he deemed significant. Through looking at his writings, interviews, exhibitions and publications, this paper attempts to establish a set of traceable system for Huang Zhuan's work. Starting from his knowledge background, this paper closely inspected his artistic interest and theoretical choice. By introducing his "tests", including many cases of failure, this paper further draws a full image of the protagonist. Therefore, this paper can be said to strategically use a "non-positive" way of writing, citing and including a large number of thinking and practical processes rather than simply singing the praises of Huang Zhuan's achievements or "closing the coffin" for him. Under the cover of a "biography of a historical figure", this paper examines his era, the scenarios and problems he was facing, and finally the efforts he had made in the face of these objective obstacles, which will definitely provide references for future work.

Book excerpt: This book documents an exhibition entitled Where Heaven Meets Earth, comprising works by atists Xu Bing and Cai Guo-Qiang. Bing is known for his bold, calligraphic, teasing, thought-provoking pieces that challenge preconceptions about written communication; while Guo-Qiang's approach draws on a wide variety of symbols, narratives, traditions and materials such as Feng Shui, Chinese medicine, dragons, roller coasters, computers, vending machines and gunpowder. Curated by Zhang Zhaohui, the exhibition was staged in the Art Museum of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. Also included here are recent pieces by the two artists, and an essay on their careers. A critical look at the works of two of the most internationally important and prominent artists from China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Featuring 70 works in various media--paintings, calligraphy, photographs, woodblock prints, video, and sculpture--that were created during the past three decades, Ink Art: Past as Present in Contemporary China will demonstrate how China's ancient pattern of seeking cultural renewal through the reinterpretation of past models remains a viable creative path. Although all of the artists have transformed their sources through new modes of expression, visitors will recognize thematic, aesthetic, or technical attributes in their creations that have meaningful links to China's artistic past. The exhibition will be organized thematically into four parts and will include such highlights as Xu Bing's dramatic Book from the Sky (ca. 1988), an installation that will fill an entire gallery; Family Tree (2000), a set of vivid photographs documenting a performance by Zhang Huan in which his facial features--and his identity--are obscured gradually by physiognomic texts that are inscribed directly onto his face; and Map of China (2006) by Ai Weiwei, which is constructed entirely of wood salvaged from demolished Qing dynasty temples." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in a major three-volume series that will survey China's immense wealth of art, architecture, and artifacts from prehistoric times to the twentieth century. The Arts of China to A.D. 900 investigates the beginnings of the traditions on which much of the art rests, moving from Neolithic and Bronze Age China to the era of the Tang Dynasty around A.D. 900. William Watson discusses in lively detail a wide range of art forms and techniques: porcelain and pottery, lacquer, religious and secular painting and sculpture, mural painting, monumental sculpture and architecture. He explains the materials and techniques of bronze casting, jade carving, pottery manufacture, and other arts, and he describes the most important sites, the artifacts that were produced at each one, and the historical interactions between different areas. He discusses the iconography, the technique and the function of every art form. Written by one of the most distinguished scholars in the field of Chinese art and archaeology, this lavishly illustrated book will be a valuable resource for both experts and beginners in the field.
