Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in the structure of the U.S. Treasury market over recent years may have increased risks to financial stability. Traditional market makers have changed their liquidity provision by increasingly switching from risk warehousing to risk distribution, and a new breed of market maker has emerged with the rise of electronic trading. The “flash rally” of October 15, 2014 provides a clear example of how those risks can materialize. Based on an in-depth analysis of the event—complementing the authorities’ work—we suggest i) providing incentives for liquidity provision, ii) improving market safeguards, and iii) enhancing the regulation of the Treasury market.

Book excerpt: There has been much concern voiced over the possible spot market volatility effects of the new financial futures markets, particularly in a study by the Federal Reserve Board and the Treasury Department regarding Treasury instrument futures markets. This study is designed to provide evidence on the spot price volatility effects of futures trading in 90-day Treasury Bills, The method of analysis is to first identify periods of time that are roughly similar in their overall capital market volatility, but differ in that one period is before TBill futures trading began and its comparable period is after TBill futures trading began. Next several econometric techniques are used to estimate models of interest rate determination. The estimation produces measures of spot TBill rate volatility for each of the comparable periods which are then used in a pairwise fashion to ascertain the spot price volatility effects of futures trading. The interest rate models come from the rather large body of macroeconomics literature dealing with the formation of interest rates. The econometric techniques span different assumptions imposed on the models and each technique provides consistent estimates of the model parameters under the stated conditions. Further, simple analysis of daily and weekly TBill rates is performed to provide continuity with studies of futures market spot price effects in other commodities. The results of all the statistical tests suggest that Treasury Bill futures trading does not increase spot market volatility during relatively stable periods of capital market activity, but is associated with increased spot Treasury Bill market volatility during times when overall capital market conditions are volatile. These results indicate that Treasury Bill futures trading alone does not increase spot market volatility, contrary to the hypothesis that simply the existence of financial futures trading destabilizes the underlying spot market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this book discusses many important aspects of the theory and practice of Futures Markets. It describes how they, at the time, grew to be an increasingly important feature of the world's major financial centres. Indeed, they adopted the role of being efficient forward pricing mechanisms and this was reflected by the interest of economists in the study of risk, uncertainty and information. Here, the contributors focus on areas that were of concern in the late 1980s such as feasibility, forward pricing and returns, and the modelling of price determination in Futures Markets. Evidence is drawn from twenty-five different commodities representing all the major commodity groups; and from all the world's major centres of Futures Trading.

Book excerpt: WHY SOME PEOPLE ALMOST ALWAYS MAKE MONEY IN FUTURES AND OPTIONS Uncertainty and risk go hand in hand with money-making opportunities. Services, goods, and basic materials will probably undergo major price swings at one time or another during the next 20 years. The markets are volatile, and they will only keep increasing. The chances for sustainable trends that last for decades, and the way the stock market rallied in the ‘80s and ‘90s are now less likely than they were a few years ago. Trading options and futures is not gambling. It is speculating. It is also about gathering information, and making judgment calls on circumstances that are unfolding. Futures and options trading is a process of self-protection, and continuing education. What you will learn in this book The futures markets are resurging. They are also likely to be hot for many years, given the political landscape. The emergence of India and China as economic powers and consumers, and the changing world demographics, and the changing politics in the Middle East are likely to fuel the increasing prominence of these markets. This ebook will introduce you to these markets, and equip you with the necessary tools for: strong”Trading, analyzing, or simply gaining a better understanding of how money works, and impacts your daily life. strong”Getting started in improving your knowledge on how markets work. strong”Learning that time is on your side in bond and stock markets, but your enemy in the futures and options markets. strong”Remembering that measuring your return of money is more important than the return on your money.Investors in the past could afford to buy and hold stocks or mutual funds for a long time. You need to get ready to work as a trader, a geopolitical analyst, an expert in the oil markets, and a money manager. You will learn to keep up with news on economy, weekly oil supply trends, disruptions in oil supply, weather patterns, and the stock market, both in the micro and macro universe. As a futures and options trader, you need to do the same with your contract. You must also learn to pay attention to time factors, especially the expiration dates and how much time you have left to decide whether to exercise your option. Always remember that successful traders: strong”Design a solid plan, follow it, and make adjustments to fit changing conditionsstrong”See trading as a businessstrong”Are disciplined in both their professional and personal livesstrong”Understand the game they are playing, including the risksstrong”Accept that they will make mistakesstrong”Learn from their mistakesstrong”Never trade without having an exit strategystrong”Never risk money that they cannot afford to losestrong”Never allow a bad trade to result in a margin callYou may see yourself as a dummy in the world of futures and options markets. Book excerpt: In this booklet, one of a series intended to apply economic principles to major social and political issues of the day, it is proposed that speculation is often misunderstood, particularly in the operation of the futures markets. These are markets in which obligations to consummate sales and purchases at some time in the future are traded at a price specified today. Part 1 of the booklet offers a simplified analysis of some of the elementary economics of transactions involving time. Part 2 analyzes the nature of futures and options markets, and discusses the reasons for their existence, their evolution, and some of the basics involved in their operations. Part 3 is an account of the entities subject to futures and options trading, such as commodities, bonds, shares of corporations, and foreign exchange, and describes the most prominent features of the futures and options markets related to such entities. Finally, Part 4 discusses the social usefulness of futures markets, a few of the common criticisms, and the role of government regulation. (IS)
