This research analyzes the achievements of the economy regarding the important variables such as growth of GDP, export, import, exchange rate, terms of trade, and foreign reserve after the trade liberalization in 1990s. The study demonstrates that the inward policy of the trade liberalization reduces the import while the forward policy increases the employment, production, and export. Finally, liberalization policy improves overall economic indicators as GDP per capita, FDI, and remittances have been growing up since pre-liberalization. The study shows that both export and import have increased noticeably since liberalization, with import rising faster than export in the period immediately after liberalization.

Book excerpt: Global trade liberalization with regard to the readymade garments industry is a topic of highest relevance for the Bangladeshi economy and linked very strongly to its changing social structure. Garment industry actually is a very new, export-oriented sector of the Bangladesh economy. It was only some twenty years ago that this sector was fully established in Bangladesh. Today it has grown to the number eighteen exporter world-wide, employing some 1.8 million people directly, of whom most of them are women, and another 10 million indirectly. The main markets are the EU and NAFTA. The development of Bangladesh garments industry was facilitated by the different Multi Fibre Arrangements. Therefore--as many other new competitors have grown over the last couple of years, namely South and East Asian including China, the ASEAN, Mexico and 24 Caribbean countries--Bangladesh's garment industry will face a difficult period after 2004.

Book excerpt: "The authors examine the effects of WTO agreements and domestic trade policy reforms on production, welfare, and poverty in Bangladesh. They use a sequential dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, which takes into account accumulation effects, allowing for long-run analysis. The study is based on the 2000 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) of Bangladesh including 15 production sectors, four factors of production (skilled and unskilled labor, agricultural and nonagricultural capital), and nine household groups (five in rural areas and four in urban areas). To examine the link between the macroeconomic effects and microeconomic effects in terms of poverty, the authors use the representative household approach with actual intra-group income distributions. The study presents five simulations for which the major findings are: - The Doha scenario has negative implications for the overall macroeconomy, household welfare, and poverty in Bangladesh. Terms of trade deteriorate and consumer prices, particularly food prices, increase more than nominal incomes, especially among poor households. - Free world trade has similar, but larger, impacts. - Domestic trade liberalization induces an expansion of agricultural and light manufacturing sectors, favorable changes in the domestic terms of trade. Although the short-run welfare and poverty impacts are negative, these turn positive in the long run when capital has adjusted through new investments. Rising unskilled wage rates make the poorest households the biggest winners in terms of welfare and poverty reduction. - Domestic liberalization effects far outweigh those of free world trade when these scenarios are combined. - Remittances constitute a powerful poverty-reducing tool given their greater importance in the income of the poor." -- Cover verso.

Book excerpt: The book examines the impact of trade liberalization and deregulation on the Bangladesh economy between the periods 1980 to 2009. The book analyzes the achievements of the economy in terms of important variables such as growth, inflation and the trade balance. An analysis is for the most part descriptive relying on tables and graphs. However, the findings in these chapters are put to test by econometric analysis towards the end. The analysis clearly indicates that GDP growth increased consequent to liberalization and deregulation. Trade liberalization does not seem to have aftected inflation in the economy. The quantitative analysis also suggests that greater openness has had a favourable effect on economic development. Both real export and imports have increased with greater openness. Liberalization policy certainly improves export of the country which eventually leads higher economic growth after 1990s. The average degree of openness sharply increases more than double after the year 2000 than the last decade. Despite of this improvement after liberalization the average trade balance of Bangladesh remains in deficit.

Book excerpt: The book broadly discusses the trade liberalization impact on the food sector of Bangladesh. For doing so the book comprises of two sections, firstly; to analyze the policy incentives in terms of protection and efficiency of production through analysing comparative advantages in the rice sector by using policy analysis matrix (PAM) and secondly, to measure the effect of policy shocks on production, consumption and welfare distribution in the food sector of Bangladesh by using multi market modelling technique. From PAM in-line with financial profit, social profit, policy transfers and various protection coefficients such as NPCO,NPCI,EPC and PC and competitiveness coefficients such as DRC, SCB, SNRL and PNRL were derived. On the other hand, through multimarket modeling five scenarios (baseline: assumed free trade; Doha round: price increased effect;high cost: 5% decrease in supply under highest Doha round projection; productivity shift: 10% increase in supply and national protection: different level of protection in both market under baseline) were analyzed to know the welfare distribution as well as food security impact of price or policy shocks

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines some of the contradictions and theoretical ambiguities of agricultural trade liberalization on the welfare of smallholder farmers. Using production, consumption and price data for pre-and post-liberalization periods for two main agricultural crops from Bangladesh (rice) and Tanzania (maize) we critically analyse the correlation between domestic and international prices of rice in Bangladesh and maize in Tanzania to estimate impact of agricultural trade liberalization on price stability/volatility and food security to measure economic benefits of trade liberalization on smallholder farmers. Using coefficient of variation of the level of prices (CV) and corrected coefficient of variation (CCV) as measured by Huchet-Bourdon (2011) we found that the values of both CV and CCV for consumer price in the post-liberalisation were quite large suggesting greater volatility of consumer price of rice in Bangladesh and maize in Tanzania in the post-liberalization period. We conclude that price volatility diminishes the potential benefits of agricultural trade liberalization for smallholder farmers who are net-deficit producers, net-deficit sellers and recommend supplementary policy interventions to achieve enhanced welfare from trade liberalization.
