This book was released on 1995 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of communist power in the Soviet Union and subsequent measures to establish a private sector have created opportunities for both foreign and domestic private capital in Russia, and the non-Russian republics of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This volume, which contains revised papers originally published by the Post-Soviet Business Forum at the Royal Institute for International Affairs, provides a sober, long-term assessment of investment priorities in the former Soviet Union and the problems that potential investors will encounter and their prospects for success. The contributors neither exaggerate nor underestimate the difficulties facing potential investors, many of whom have been attracted by the region's enormous wealth of natural resources. William Butler assesses the issues involved in creating the legal structure necessary to facilitate private investment, paying particular attention to issues of ownership, investment, and company law. David Humphreys analyzes the specific problems of investment in the mining and metals industries in the CIS and the prospects for integrating these industries with the world economy. Jonathan Stern assesses the prospects for investment in the Russian oil and gas sector over the next decade. Julian Cooper addresses the lessons emerging from the conversion of the former Soviet defense industry to civilian production. Sergei Manezhev analyzes the specific problems of investment in the Russian Far East, a region that is rich in natural resources, and provides a study of the operation of free economic zones in the region. David Dyker provides an overall assessment of the prospects for investment in Russia and the CIS. Post-Soviet Business Forum Collection

Download or read book The Commonwealth of Independent States Economies written by Marcus Goncalves and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the official inauguration of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a free association of sovereign states comprised by Russia and 11 other republics that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. Although this loose association of states may not exist as a fixed-entity on the globe, it is believed that this bloc of countries will continue to build upon the various separate regions in the former Soviet space in the coming decade. This book provides a regional analysis and a country scan of the CIS regional block economies. It examines its history since the breakup of the formal Soviet Union and the formation of the CIS bloc, including creation of regional agreements such as the CIS Free Trade Area and the Eurasian Economic Union, which now represents more than 180 million people. As a whole, our text attempts to better understand current, and future, prospects for economic growth in the region, as well as their individual national challenges.
Book Synopsis Introduction and Summary to the Handbook of Trade Policy and WTO Accession for Development in Russia and the CIS by : David Tarr
Download or read book Introduction and Summary to the Handbook of Trade Policy and WTO Accession for Development in Russia and the CIS written by David Tarr and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper is the introduction and summary chapter of the 43 chapter volume entitled Handbook of Trade Policy and WTO Accession for Development in Russia and the CIS. The key policy conclusions of each of the chapters are highlighted in this paper. The Handbook will be published only in Russian in 2005, but an English language version of the majority of the papers described here is available on the website www.worldbank.org/trade/russia-wto. This paper first explains the potential importance of World Trade Organization (WTO) accession as a development tool, and discusses the recent successful development models and the role of trade policy in their development. The paper then summarizes the three parts of the Handbook. The first part treats trade policy (with applications to Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States [CIS]). The second part treats World Trade Organization institutions and disciplines, again with Russia and CIS applications. And the third part focuses on various aspects of the impact of WTO accession on Russia. The numerous papers that relate trade policy and WTO accession to experience in Russia and the CIS are likely to be of special interest to native English speakers, since these papers are new to the literature. The papers in the Handbook are intended to be non-technical materials accessible to a wide policy audience. The Handbook forms the basis of a World Bank Institute course on trade policy and WTO accession, which has been delivered and will be delivered again on multiple occasions. "--World Bank web site.

Book Synopsis Russian Imperialism Revisited by : Domitilla Sagramoso
Download or read book Russian Imperialism Revisited written by Domitilla Sagramoso and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nature of Russia’s relations with the former Soviet states (FSS), in particular with countries which formed the Commonwealth of Independent States, in order to assess whether there has been a resurgence of Russian imperialism since the collapse of the USSR. The book sets out to determine whether Russian leaders have attempted to restore a sphere of influence over the former Soviet republics or whether Russia’s policies reflect a genuine desire to establish normal state-to-state relations with the new states. It adopts a comprehensive approach, analysing Russia’s policies towards the FSS across a broad range of areas: energy, trade and investment; military assistance, security provision and peacekeeping; conflict management, political support, and alliance formation. While not denying the Kremlin’s assertive role in the FSS, this book challenges the assumption that Russia has always intended to restore a sphere of influence over its ‘Near Abroad’. Rather, it argues that Russia’s policies are much more complex, multi-faceted, and often more incoherent than is often assumed. In essence, Russia's actions generally reflect a combination of legitimate state interests, enduring Soviet legacies, and genuine concerns over events unfolding along Russia’s borders. This book also shows that, at times, Great-Power nostalgia and a real difficulty with discarding Russia’s imperial legacy shapes Russia’s behaviour towards the FSS. This book will be of great interest to students of Russian politics and foreign policy, east European politics, and International Relations in general.
