European Union as an economic community which consists of 28 countries hold important role in the world economic growth, and its trade activity have been affect of world trade. Indonesia has a good relationship with European Union. The European Union is a strategic partner in trade and investment. Indonesia external trade grows along the increasing demand from European members country, both for manufacturing goods and raw materials from Indonesia to support industries in Europe. Main objective in this research is to observe and analyze the trade relationship between Indonesia and European using various data from external trade statistic of European Union (EUROSTAT and Jean Monet working files), International Monetary Fund (IMF), Indonesia Bureau of Statistics and other related data in order to know what is the main product/commodities that Indonesia export to European Union as well as main product/commodities that Indonesia import from European Union during period 2009 to 2011, and also to reveal the main gateways of Indonesia external trade to European Union. Furthermore, we observe and review one of main commodities of Indonesia export to European Union. As the result of the research, we find out that the main product of Indonesia export product to European Union is Animal and vegetable fats, oils, cleavage and waxes (Section 3) which constantly has the largest share value of total Indonesia export, followed by Machinery product (Section 16). On the other hand, Machinery (section 16), Chemicals (section 6) and Vehicles (section 17) were the main import product from European Union to Indonesia. In trade relationship between Indonesia and European Union, Germany is the main gateway country both for Indonesia export product and Indonesia import product. Next, we focus on Palm oil product as a part of section 3 which is booming and its market share continuously increase, defeat Malaysia position in the global market. Indonesia government makes Masterplan Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia Economic Development (MP3EI) as a policy to support Indonesia natural and human resources utilization, including in palm oil product through Regulation, Connectivity (infrastructure) and Human resources and science & technology.

Book excerpt: This paper attempts to elaborate potential effect of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) on the trading of goods and services between the European Union (EU) and Indonesia mostly in addressing issues that might considered to be impeding the conclusion of CEPA negotiations. The agreement between the EU and Indonesia will improve the economic relations between these economies, while creating benefits for both. Indonesia and the EU began talks on the preparation for the CEPA since 2012. The CEPA has been presented as having the ability to help both parties take full advantage of unexploited economic relations between the EU and Indonesia. It will be a comprehensive agreement focusing various aspects of economic relations and moved beyond a simple agreement for removing trade barriers. While global trade liberalization in goods remains important aspect of the CEPA, investment promotion, and facilitation, the improvement of trade in services, and the creation of improved competition policy practices would also promote greater economic relations. Indonesia expects three major contributions from the CEPA, i.e.: First, the most obvious one relates to the promotion of increased trade between Indonesia and the EU. The agreement's focus on trade liberalization will increase the intensity of trade relations by lowering trade barriers and facilitating trade; Second, expected contribution of the CEPA affects trade transactions and foreign investments in services; Third, enhanced technology and skills transfer in the goods, services and investment sectors. To conclude, the EU and Indonesia free trade will provide more stable, balanced, and long-term framework on extra-regional cooperation.

Book excerpt: As preferential trade agreements are growing in number and depth, assessment of their economic impacts has become more important to inform policy-makers facing a multitude of potential preferential trade agreements. This paper provides novel ex ante estimates of the impacts of two key preferential trade agreements currently negotiated by Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia. The paper then compares these estimates with those of other preferential trade agreements that Indonesia may negotiate in the future. To that end it, combines a dynamic, multi-country computable general equilibrium model and a microsimulation tool linking the macroeconomic results to household-level welfare. The results suggest that, among the preferential trade agreements considered, the European Union-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (EU-CEPA) is expected to yield the largest gains for Indonesia in income, output, and exports. This result is due to a combination of large expected reductions in trade barriers and a high share of international trade between the partners. These macro effects translate into the highest expected income growth relative to the other preferential trade agreements at every point of the income distribution. However, the gains for the EU-CEPA are proportionately larger for richer households, unlike the other agreements considered. The regressive gains are mainly due to the increase in skill wage premia spurred by the additional demand for skill-intensive sectors, especially services.
